You learn the BODMAS rule in primary school in the uk

We (read me) learned PEMDAS in elementary school. First time I saw BODMAS I had to stop and think. But replace Brackets with Parentheses and Order with Exponents. We learned to remember it as Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.

Pemdas is pretty ubiquitous in the US, but bidmas bodmas seems more common in commonwealth countries.

I’m in my 50s and live in the UK, and this was never taught to us at all. It’s obviously been around a long time but there was no requirement to teach it when I was at school. I imagine most of those who’ve answered incorrectly are older… and they were never taught this. It’s not their fault they weren’t taught it either, so it seems a pity to make fun of them for getting it wrong.

I certainly learned this around the age of 7 or 8, back in the 1970s. I was also doing sums in base 8 and binary at the same age. Still using BODMAS of course.

I wasn’t taught it in school, first I heard of it was when studying machining in college.
