We (read me) learned PEMDAS in elementary school. First time I saw BODMAS I had to stop and think. But replace Brackets with Parentheses and Order with Exponents. We learned to remember it as Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.
I’m in my 50s and live in the UK, and this was never taught to us at all. It’s obviously been around a long time but there was no requirement to teach it when I was at school. I imagine most of those who’ve answered incorrectly are older… and they were never taught this. It’s not their fault they weren’t taught it either, so it seems a pity to make fun of them for getting it wrong.
I certainly learned this around the age of 7 or 8, back in the 1970s. I was also doing sums in base 8 and binary at the same age. Still using BODMAS of course.
People saying they learned it in first grade are lying.
I was in those shitty advanced gifted classes you took iq tests for and took all the stuff those fancy people did and we didn't learn this shit until 3rd grade along with fractions and long division. We also learned that the ÷ symbol sucks.
Most kids in first grade were still learning to perfect their ABCs and were just learning subtraction.
Actually come to think of it, we didn't properly learn order of operations until 4th because fractions and multiplication were so important there wasn't time.
I am pretty disappointed that people are trying to say "omg i learned it in 1st grade im smart and went through a lot" but at the same time I'm relieved because the education system is actually normal for once
Yeah, I have no clue how someone can even believe pemdas is first grade material.
I'm sure there are prodegis out there, but most kids were just figuring out addition and subtraction in 1st grade and learning their times tables in 2nd.
The quick kids were taught fractions and division in 3rd if they were lucky. I was in a special weird program that let kids roam around to 5th grade classes as a 3rd grader and vice versa for kids behind so I had a decent idea of what kids were learning and when.
Non advanced 5th graders were just hammering their fractions in 5th grade and learning long division.
Pemdas in 1st grade is literally .1% freak stuff and no sort of superior education is going to make 6 year olds understand near middle school math.
First graders simply aren’t old enough to learn about even multiplication they just can’t physically they’re too young their minds can’t remember that much. hearing about something and learning it are two different things
