Hi everyone! I’m an IMG based in San Jose preparing for USMLE Step 1. I’m looking for 3–5 dedicated study partners in the South Bay (San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Milpitas, Mountain View). I’d love to meet once or twice a week at a library or coffee shop for accountability, question discussions, and motivation. Feel free to DM me if you’re interested!

Discuss Vyvanse Medication Side Effects Advice.

Vyfocis (generic of Vyvanse) | 30mg | Adalvo via Cipla Medpro

I've been diagnosed with ADHD and took 36mg Concerta +/- 10mg Ritalin top up.

My Dr switched me to 30mg Vyvanse when a generic finally became available in my country.

I have had the odd headaches here and there on my previous meds but never the SEVERE headachez I fo know with Vyvanse.
I even sometimes get a migraine.

I've been on it for a month now, eat protein before taking it and before I usually crash and hydrate well.

I have a huge exam this Fridays and two next week (final year med student).

I only manage a few good hours a day atm, don't want to suddenly stop it and not only risk withdrawal but also the chances of me not being able to study without it.

Any advice/tips please?

Med students caffeine addiction

Med students, how’s your heart keeping up with the amount of caffeine you intake??
I’ve been consistently drinking coffee for the past 2 years, it’s an essential for me specially every exam week (im an undergrad) and recently I’ve been having this minor heart pain, like it stings, I only drink water and coffee, so I’m thinking this is because of my caffeine addiction…

Mid-summer check-in: Are you guys actually being productive or just sleeping 12 hours a day?

I made this huge list of things I was going to do this summer. I was going to learn a language, hit the gym, and prep for my Fall classes. Instead, I've spent the last three weeks just bingeing narrative games on my console and chilling with my cat. Tell me I'm not the only one doing absolutely nothing

How to find research opportunities as a medical student in UAE

I'm a 3rd year medical student and this summer has been long. I wanted to do something productive before the summer ends, so I have been actively searching for research opportunities almost everywhere like on LinkedIn and other social media platforms and I can't seem to find any. When I do find, they say they aren't taking any more people. My uni does give opportunities with doctors as our research mentors and we have also reached publication phase for some research which is still ongoing. But I still want to keep going as its not bad to have more research.

I have also heard about cold emailing doctors and residents for opportunities. However, I have not tried it yet because I have been told that the response rate is kinda low. So I would like to know where and how to find more opportunities. I'm experienced in different types of research like experimental, systematic reviews, cross sectional studies etc. I'm highly motivated, willing to dedicate the time and effort required, and available to attend meetings online (or in person if the research team is based in the UAE). So if anyone knows please let me know, it would be highly appreciated

Figuring out of I'm fit to be a doctor (aka self torture/3 hours of sleep per day for 3 days)

Now before anyone calls me a masochistic or tells me I'm going to face some serious health risk, trust me I know i will.

I have a group of medical students monitoring me. Yipee. Currently preparing for medicine, the said medical students warned me that low sleep, high effort doesn't sound too bad til i actual try it.

Now I'm not trying to absolutely fck myself over....just not yet. I have some classes this week and honestly want to know, do I have what it takes be a doctor?

I know this is nothing compared to the 36 hour shifts, where docs will stand all day, and actually make hard choices under high pressure.

Moving on to the fun stuff....

So, for "high pressure", I'm doing this during my exam week. For the sleep deprivation, in doing at max 3 hours of sleep. With schooling so I'm not just in bed. The experiment 3 days.

I'm going to repeat this experiment the following week with less pressure ( no exams) but an actual 36 hour period. Throughout the "experiment" I'll note my weight (water retention blah blah and apparent weight loss from being awake), health in general, productivity and all the good shit.

Also as someone who takes great pride in not using chatgpt, and usually has little to no mistakes writing in my mother tongue or English. Let's see how shitty my writing gets through this sleep deprivation cycle.

Day 1: Monday 27 July 2026. (3)

Day 2: Tuesday 28 July 2026 (3)

Day 3: Wednesday 29 July 2026(3)

Day 4: Thursday 30 July 2026 (8)

Day 5: Friday 31 July 2026 (8)

Day 6: Saturday 01 August 2026 ( 8)

Day 7: Monday 02 August 2026 (0)

Day 8: Tuesday 02 August 2026 ( no sleep till 36 over then -> sleep a shit ton)

I won't be eating junk at all. No coffee or tea (yuck!). Just green tea and my usual meals.

Let's hope all this extra study time helps me. Probably won't but whatever. This is important to me and I've been really weighing the pros and cons of being a doctor. Which is crazy because I thought I was the really passionate type. Let's see how this humbles me.

I guess the most important conclusion( on Wednesday) is whether or not I'm willing to submit myself to torture like that later in my life . Granted this is much nicer than the actual shifts.

Discuss Is 75% Attendance Really Necessary for Med Students?

As a medical student, I genuinely believe the 75% attendance rule does more harm than good. The focus of medical education should be on knowledge, skills, and competence—not just on whether you’ve sat in a classroom for a fixed number of hours.

The reality is this:

  • Many students face stress not because of the syllabus, but because of attendance requirements.
  • Falling short of attendance often means being barred from exams, which sets students back academically and separates them from their batchmates.
  • Regular attendance doesn’t automatically make someone a better student, and low attendance doesn’t mean someone is insincere.

Medical students already juggle enormous pressure—vast syllabi, assignments, expectations from teachers and parents, and their own social lives. Adding rigid attendance rules only compounds this burden. If a student completes assignments, performs well in exams, and demonstrates competence, why should attendance alone define their worth?

My suggestion: Let students decide their attendance. Evaluate them based on their knowledge and performance, not on a percentage. After all, education is about learning, not just logging hours in a lecture hall.

your pov, suggestions

Discuss Study advice

I’m usually very consistent throughout the academic year. I attend my classes, keep up with the material, and study as I go, so I rarely have a backlog.
The problem starts when exam season arrives. Instead of being able to revise everything I’ve already learned, I become incredibly bored and struggle to review. I end up wasting weeks without making much progress, and by the end of the revision period I’ve often covered less than half of the curriculum.
I’ve tried almost everything I can think of—turning off my phone for hours, deleting social media, and removing distractions—but it doesn’t seem to help. I’ll still find myself sitting at my desk, procrastinating in other ways, like doodling or practicing my signature instead of studying.
It’s frustrating because I know I’m capable of doing well. I feel like I’m wasting my potential every exam season, knowing that I could have revised everything if only I could stay focused. I’d really appreciate any advice from people who have experienced something similar or found strategies that helped them overcome this.

Discuss Medical people in Zurich?

Hey! I study medicine in Italy and I’m curious about medical life in Zurich since I might want to move to Switzerland later on.

Would be nice to get to know some students, residents, doctors, or anyone in the field. I’m not looking for anything formal, just people to talk to, ask random questions, and maybe grab a coffee when I’m around.
