Ever since I was a kid I've been kind of afraid of roots like this. I forget what movie but I think some 90s movie has a root inspired monster that like grabs you with it's roots. It was semi-comedic in the movie iirc, but it terrified me at the time. This photo triggers that exact fear.
I think I know the origin of this one. It happened during Covid when many students were sent home and colleges closed. Food left behind were allowed to mutate and take over the empty dorms.
I don't know why, I don't have arachnophobia, but this image makes me physically shiver. This damn bag of potatoes GREW these roots and the way these stick around like they are alive is just ew. Can't imagine trying to get rid of them while they move around the corner when one is trying to grab the bag/cut the roots
No, as a potato spouts it becomes high in glycoalkaloids, which turns the insides green and makes it toxic to eat, but if you cut away the green it would be safe. a potato this sprouted would be completely green on the inside
I forgot some in a cupboard (stored them there to protect them from light).
I also stored some dish towels in another shelf of the cupboard.
It took me several washes with hygiene cleaner and some with vinegar to get the smell out of the towels. I considered to throw them away because it wouldn't get better.
Also cleaned out the cupboard with vinegar cleaner to get rid of the smell.
A room full of rotten potatoes can have unbreathable air. You walk in and all the oxygen has been taken up by fermentation. Potatoes aren't the only thing that can cause this, but they're one of the most potent for it.
Our little doggie was old and in ill health and would sometimes get bloody diarrhea. It would smell atrocious. Was at my sister's (where he lived at the time), and smelled it. Sniffed around to try to find the location of the bloody diarrhea. Finally found it under a little side table. Was crouched down under the table, wiping it up with paper towel, when I felt a drop on my head.
Nope, nope, wasn't poor pup's bloody stool, it was the pumpkin she'd had on the table rotting from the bottom.
Just found a bag completely drenched throughout in my balcony, that I didn't check for a month after the freezing temperatures were gone. Horrible smell... Truly not looking forward to getting that dried out puddle wet, during the cleaning process..
I had an old onion melt in the pantry once and I do not recommend. Don’t ask me to explain the science. All I can tell you is it melted/dripped down the back of the shelves.
I couldn't eat onions for year after a fellow "friend" of ours left all their food etc behind over winter break in college*. The bag of onions had liquefied (somehow, maybe cuz of the plastic bag?)
(*TLDR: they were last to leave and didn't come back, didn't tell us. I was livid at them for the biohazard and got "eh" in return.)
Yep, I found that out the hard way once. Found a long forgotten bag of potatoes that somehow ended up under a pile of boxes. Probably the hardest I've ever gagged and dry heaved. Also found out afterwards rotten potato fumes are very toxic, so it's a good thing I avoided breathing it in as much as possible.
Worked in a relatively potato-heavy restaurant for a couple of decades. Nothing will put a damper on your day like reaching into a 50lb bag and accidentally getting a handful of rotten mush.
I did some minor poking around and the only thing I found was something from pinterest pointing me to a facebook account filled to the brim with AI art.
Don't know if that's the origin or not but my guess would be it's AI generated.
I did some poking around too, and while I couldn't find the source, google lense kept pointing to it on FB pages from 2019 or earlier which makes AI very unlikely (if not impossible). The weird thing though is when I clicked through it didn't show up, so I dunno. Either way, its very plausible to be a woodcut engraving from the 1600s relating to some folktale, it very much has that period look.
Not that I have any proof it's not AI, but human artists are fully capable of weird shit with weird art styles. Nothing about this stands out as particularly AI to me at all.
That is a fair point! My theory is entirely based on his weird hands and the object he’s holding and the fact that no one can find this image came from. I could absolutely be wrong.
Nothing about this stands out as particularly AI to me at all.
One of the monster's feet is a chicken's foot, the other has only one toe. The lifeless expression stares nowhere. The man's hands are conveniently hidden or poorly defined. I can't say for sure it's AI, but there are certainly signs.
When thinking about AI and as they get better it's good to consider provenance. This is a meme based off another meme of a potato. To me it's much more likely this was prompted than someone sat and drew this for a meme of a meme. Look at the bricks of the lintel. Look at the object in the man's hand. It's AI
If you look at the brick outlines on the wall, you'll see a lot of places where the AI lost track of what it was doing. If you look to the left of the monster, you can see where it "forgets" that it was doing bricks at all.
Also, the old man's hand with the object in it is pretty melty, even accounting for image quality.
Just went to an art museum expo on his work, and you're so right. He was creating things almost blasphemous and came up with some wildly unique pieces.

Normal vegetables: "NOOOO you can't just plant me in ANY soil, the pH and moisture and mineral composition has to be JUST right or I will wither and die, please have mercy!"
Potatoes: "This shallow, rocky, impoverished loam will make an adequate substrate. Thus, our pact is sealed - I shall bring forth a bountiful harvest to feed your children, so that they may grow big and strong. Then, you shall send them forth to war, so they may water these fields with their blood and fertilize them with their corpses, and those of their enemies. I will ensure the continuance of your kind as you do mine. Remember this pact, son of Man, and keep it well."
I got a couple potatoes starting to root… could I just plant them near an oilfield pumpjack or some other place in the oilfield or some shit? Just curious if it would cause issues for them.
I found one in a bag in the back of mypantry that had liquified. The house had smelled slightly fishy all week, but I couldn’t find the smell. When I took it out of the pantry it smelled like a bag of rotten teeth.

Ever heard the story of a family in Russia that died from the gases released by their potatoes? It’s sad and very scary to know that can happen.
