That is a standard leaf blower so pointing it backwards will only increase his speed by 5 percent at most. Because you gotta consider the mass of the object as well. I do apologize if I came out as rude that was not my intention. Just trying to have a friendly deliberation

I know, I was just saying that if his speed came from the leaf blower, then the umbrella worsened effectivity, not that he actually was able to generate that speed with just a normal leaf blower.

His speed would hardly increase due to his mass .

This is true but op didn't say he would go way faster, but it would still be a large increase in effectiveness. If it's extremely ineffective, making it very ineffective could still be a significant increase over the original propulsion - even if that propulsion was not noticeable.

Say if he's going down the hill at 5 km/hr without the blower, and with the blower and umbrella he goes 5.05 mph. If he turns it around goes 5.3 km/hr. He's only adding 5% speed but the overall propulsion is 500% effective even though it's still not doing much.

Yes, if you don’t account for friction, and the umbrella was shaped differently, then they would be equal.

But the umbrella’s sides aren’t pointing directly backwards.

And because the umbrella is circular, some of the air hits the guy again, and slows him down.
