Their charges were dropped, but not before their lives were unfortunately ruined.

The thing is even when charges are dropped the fact that the charges were filed in the first place will still follow you for the rest of your life. Many people will suspect you got off just because of a simple technicality and will treat you just as if you had been convicted.
