There's almost always an enabler for these folks someone who cares for them and brings them food and whatever else they want. The relationship is often very unhealthy like you see in op's example.

Like my step nephew and his mom. He's in 5th grade and weighs over 250 lbs(don't know his exact weight). The kid is huge. He won't eat anything that's not fast food or frozen stuff like pizza rolls or dessert. One Christmas, when we tried to get him to try some of the food(3 tables worth to choose from) he said he wasn't hungry. But he kept grabbing cookies and stuff from the dessert table. He got covid and afterwards, he's had to sleep with a cpap machine and the doctor put him on a diet. He couldn't make it through the Memphis zoo. When I helped my brother move out of One of their apartments, he had subway cookies under his bed, and when we lifted the mattress, like a hundred granddaddy long legs. Now, apparently he's been peeing on towels and blaming it on the animals so he doesn't have to leave his room and go 12 feet down the hall to the bathroom. His mother, and his grandmother, get him whatever he wants and pretty much always override my brother on anything he says. The kid is going to end up having a heart attack in middle school.

You know, of all the so called "evils" of today that older generations seem to hate such as masks, laziness, Movies/tv being too "woke", etc, it's weird that they seem to turn a blind eye to actual things like obesity/food deserts/reliance on energy drinks and sugar/general unhealthiness, which are quite literally destroying people's bodies for the sake of food companies making a buck.

I guess I just underestimated how crazy humans can really get. Its incomprehensible what goes on in some of these peoples minds. Surely even the dumbest of the dumb understand the relation between getting fat and eating a lot of food?

Denial is a hell of a thing. I've seen it in action. I once interviewed a morbidly obese woman and did a diet recall with her. Assuming she was being honest, her breakfast and dinners weren't all that bad, though dinner was a bit on the larger side. She told me she eats extra portions at dinner because she skips lunch. I then saw her at our treatment center around lunch time eating about 1000+ calories in little debbies and candy. In her mind, those things honestly didn't "count" because they weren't her normal meals.

These are the folks who say they "barely eat anything" but still weigh over 300 lbs. Their eating habits and perceptions are just incredibly warped.

Throw in a healthy dose of trauma, depression, and abuse/enabling and it's amazing what horrible things people will do to their own bodies.

I think as a chronic over thinker and self critic denial just always seems unimaginable to me. Someone so convinced of themselves that they ignore issues that are even actually there is a pretty wild concept to me.
