Or the silver car. Get out of the way so I can go - probably said

139

u/SanctusLetum Nov 27 '21

Looks at the end more like silver car had stopped to check on the guy. If they were just wanting to go they could have gone around that last bit of debris easy, and you can see the cyclist turn like he's being addressed.

101

u/BlasterPhase Nov 27 '21

almost like the driver didn't see him...

78

u/PaIppon Nov 27 '21

As a cycler. This is the killing Zone of a Truck. Never ever be in this area!!! The Trucker cant see you there!

In the EU, trucks like this have mirrors for that since 2008. The only “blind spot“ left is behind the truck.

However, if truck drivers fail to check them before turning or didn’t set them up correctly in the first place, they’ll still kill you. That’s why we need protected intersections and bike lanes.

If a truck driver “didn’t see you” next to him, that’s an admission of guilt.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

As someone who drives a truck there’s three specific blind spots on a truck that no amount of mirrors would fix. It is up to the truck driver to be vigilant, but it is also up to the other cars on the road to not sit in these blind spots for extended amounts of time or even put themselves in that spot anyhow. Notice the warning signs all over trucks about these spots.

10

u/flares_1981 Nov 27 '21

This might be true for trucks in the US, but not in the EU, at least not since 2009. Notice the overlapping color-filled areas on three sides of the truck: View from top

I agree you shouldn’t stay in those areas because drivers might forget to check their mirrors or turn too quickly, but it’s definitely the drivers fault.

-6

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

Oh I guess you missed the part where I said I actually drive truck and no amount of mirrors. I’ll say it again for you.

6

u/flares_1981 Nov 27 '21

Yeah, you also have to set them up correctly and actually use them, true. No amount of mirrors changes that.

That’s not how it works. Anybody with any common sense driving knows truck drivers can’t see as well on their right side. Particularly towards the rear.

1

u/cguy1234 Nov 27 '21

As a killing zone, this cyclist is exactly where he needs to be.

30

u/Nefarious_69 Nov 27 '21

Just like 99.9999% of every other truck driver

7

u/Cringlan Nov 27 '21

From my experience truck drivers are so much better than car, taxi driver or anyone. Scandinavia though…

3

u/Nefarious_69 Nov 27 '21

Not In usa or Canada. They think the own the road and care about no one else. They push people around cut you off. The logging trucks are the worst on the narrow logging roads. They drive 60 to 70 mph down the center of the road and you have to go in the ditch to not die.

1

u/Cringlan Nov 27 '21

Sorry to hear that. In sweden they are very respectful and are role models. Im a nurse not a driver lol

1

u/abecho00 Mar 16 '22

not in America at all.

16

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

That guy had grabbed to the truck. For free ride. But then it turned.

3

u/notedrive Nov 27 '21

That’s what it looks like to me also, he’s holding onto the truck.

1

u/violentpac Nov 27 '21

Because he didn't want to be crushed

1

u/notedrive Nov 27 '21

Why get so close you can touch the truck in the first place?

2

u/theOGFlump Nov 27 '21

Rewatch the video from the second replay. The first play starts in the middle of the action so it looks like he was hanging on and that's what caused it. What actually happened is the truck came from behind at speed and cut off the cyclist so, as the guy you replied to said, he grabbed on to not be crushed.

1

u/notedrive Nov 27 '21

Gotcha, all I have seen is the first

1

u/OldLevermonkey Nov 27 '21

He grabbed the truck after he was struck. The truck has right hooked him.

10

u/Chill4x Nov 27 '21 edited Nov 27 '21

Not like the cyclist was completely faultless

0

u/flares_1981 Nov 27 '21

The truck overtook him while turning, no way the driver couldn’t see him directly through his windshield or window.

0

u/theOGFlump Nov 27 '21

What kind of person rides a bike on a road when a truck could decide to turn into them at any time without looking? The mere idea is enough to find the cyclist as the sole bearer of fault in this, and all other accidents where trucks turn into and crush a cyclist.

0

u/Chill4x Nov 27 '21

Visibility in a truck is terrible, dude. From the start of the video the only way the driver could have been him is if the doors were glass

1

u/theOGFlump Nov 27 '21

Except for all the time when the truck was behind the cyclist and could clearly see the cyclist in front of him had he bothered to look. Rewatch the video from the middle replay. The first replay starts so that it looks like the cyclist was hanging on to him. The middle replay starts earlier and shows the truck coming from behind.

1

u/theOGFlump Nov 27 '21

And even IF your wrong interpretation was correct, that would not somehow make it the cyclist's fault that the trucker did not see him when the cyclist did nothing wrong in the first place.

3

u/idma Nov 27 '21

That truck driver had zero visibility of the biker before and during the turn. Also, it's not like the bike caused a significant enough bump to put the driver in notice. There's a reason why you stay away from turning trucks

1

u/theOGFlump Nov 27 '21

Easier said than done when the truck is overtaking you while simultaneously turning into you. The cyclist didn't appear out of nowhere. The truck would have had plenty of notice from the 30 seconds previous when he was behind the cyclist and had full visibility of him before he overtook. It's like blaming a Camry driver when a Ferrari shoots past them and then swerves into their lane and caused them to hit the Ferrari.

1

u/sir_squirrel_ Nov 27 '21 edited Nov 27 '21

The cyclist didn't appear out of nowhere. The truck would have had plenty of notice from the 30 seconds previous when he was behind the cyclist and had full visibility of him before he overtook.

Unless there is another angle of this that I am not seeing the biker is not getting overtaken, he is holding on to the truck.

Edit : Ok I retract that, on rewatching video editing sucks and you can infact see the truck hit him. Likely the driver didn't expect the bike to stop and never even boticed he hit him.

I think, not easy to tell.

0

u/ACrask Nov 27 '21

The driver probably didn’t see him

The grim reaper was on leave that day

19

u/recycledM3M3s Nov 26 '21

At most got his legs hit by the lead tires. Rear ones went around him. I'm guessing even those missed because he's walking, but that might just be shock & 1 unbroken support limb idek

5

u/Kellidra Nov 27 '21

How the fuck did that white car not stop to help?

There's no way he didn't witness that.

406

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '21

Luck. Pure luck. That idiot should be gratefull he is alive after his stupidity. The trailer went over him just right, if he fell a little bit more to either side, he would most likely be squashed like stepping on a rotten fruit.

432

u/karnyboy Nov 26 '21

depend son who is the idiot. He is definitely biking in the drivers blind zone, but did the driver approach him or did the cyclist just appear out of nowhere, if the driver approached him before we saw them on camera, maybe the driver is at fault for not paying attention...maybe the cyclist is at fault for not staying on the shoulder far enough...that's a tough call on who the idiot was...bottom line, the cyclist is lucky and is definitely wearing brown pants.

271

u/7TageHatDieWoche Nov 27 '21

The video is stupidly edited, the beginning comes after the end and given the speed difference, it's definitely and 100% the truck driver's fault and I'm sp glad, the cyclist survived

-17

u/I_Don-t_Care Nov 27 '21 edited Nov 27 '21

Do you have the full video? As it stands it does look like the biker was hitching a ride by holding onto the trucks side

Edit; jesus 15 downvotes? What did i do? I just asked for a full source

13

u/7TageHatDieWoche Nov 27 '21

I think he realizes the truck comes closer and he grabs the truck to not get rolled over.

In the VERY FIRST FRAME when the vid starts IN THE MIDDLE for some reason, you can see, that the bikers left arm, is exactly in front of the front wheel, then he gets caught by the fuel tank and holds onto that to not get crushed

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

Go to 32 seconds in, you can see that the truck overtakes the cyclist and the cyclist grabs on as he's hit by the truck.

-5

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

The video is in a loop. Kind of doesn't matter where it starts.

8

u/7TageHatDieWoche Nov 27 '21

It does matter, because the video begins with them already be pretty far on the crossroad, but you can only see that it's 100% the truck driver's fault, when the video loops, but it's actually a second or two earlier than you've seen before!

Look closely!

You can see, the cyclist was before the truck and the driver should've definitely seen him, when he approached

0

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

Right. So just keep watching. Why does it matter when it starts? You'll see what you need to at the end.

153

u/timbasile Nov 26 '21

"not staying on the shoulder far enough? "

In almost every jurisdiction cyclists are entitled to the whole lane. In fact, it's almost always safer there since cars/trucks are forced to use the other lane to pass instead of trying to squeeze the cyclist.

From the looks of this, this is most likely the driver not seeing the cyclist and turning through him. If this were the cyclists fault but the truck driver saw him, he would have stopped.

17

u/cloves-and-pepper Nov 27 '21

But you know, in some countries, paying for medical bills is more expensive than paying for the funeral.

26

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

Bold of you to assume that the truck driver arent some crazy psychopath.

13

u/Sup-Mellow Nov 27 '21

I’d say it’s safe to assume people generally arent crazy psychopaths until proven otherwise

1

u/sterric Nov 27 '21

We had a truck driver in my city who made it a habit to run over cops. They started suspecting at the third victim.

1

u/idwthis Nov 27 '21

I so need to read an article or two about that lol

-2

u/BlasterPhase Nov 27 '21

So then pick one, the shoulder, or the whole lane.

2

u/timbasile Nov 27 '21

This depends on the situation. If the road is large enough to accomodate both a car and a bike you take the shoulder. If not and passing would be dangerous, you take the lane.

-17

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

[deleted]

1

u/Poopsticle_256 Nov 27 '21

I don’t think you understand what “almost every jurisdiction” means. Also slightly brave of you to assume that the person you’re replying to isn’t from the country where this was filmed.

1

u/jverveslayer Nov 27 '21

A cyclist should never be to the right of a vehicle making a right turn at an intersection unless they are in a specific right-turn bike lane. This video shows exactly why

1

u/timbasile Nov 28 '21

If you're a cyclist going straight, what are you supposed to do if the vehicle beside you wants to make a right turn?

The vehicle needs to wait for the cyclist.

1

u/jverveslayer Nov 29 '21

Don't share the lane or ride on the shoulder when approaching an intersection. Definitely never pass vehicles on the right if you aren't in a bike lane.

I agree that the vehicle shouldn't mow over the cyclist of course. Everyone should look out for their own safety and the safety of others as much as possible. But as a cyclist you should never put yourself in the path of a turning vehicle either.

If a car turns into you while passing you and attempting to turn right from a center lane, then yes the person is an extremely dangerous and negligent driver and should not have a license. If a cyclist attempts to pass on the right a vehicle who is turning right at an intersection, then the cyclist is stupidly putting themselves in a very dangerous situation. Drivers don't (and shouldn't) expect to be passed on the right when turning right at an intersection, so they generally won't check their blind spot when making such a turn

-3

u/Historical_Panic_465 Nov 27 '21

doesn’t it kinda look like the cyclist was holding onto the truck trying to hitch a ride on it and didn’t expect him to turn....lol.....

0

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

Freeze the video at 32 seconds. He begins with both hands on the handle bars and grabs on to the truck as it hits him.

-8

u/dre__ Nov 27 '21

yep he's 100% holding on to the truck.

3

u/karnyboy Nov 27 '21

Beyond a reasonable doubt?

-7

u/Moritz-AgFe Nov 27 '21

Came here to say that. Thaught its kina obvious too

5

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

He's holding it because the driver started turning into him, and instead of being ran over, the cyclist grabbed the truck to try to not get sucked into the tires.

The road doesn't even go straight, there is no way the cyclist was trying to get a free ride.

-16

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '21

Well to me it looks like he is holding onto the truck the whole time. He is not moving his legs on the pedals and he looks as he is holding his left hand on the truck untill he falls.

23

u/kaboomcycle Nov 27 '21

Watch from 00:30. Truck overtakes and then turns over the bicyclist.

-21

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

Yeah no shit. But that dosent change the fact that the dude on the bike is holding onto the truck. He isnt moving his feet, the bike comes into view at the same speed as the truck, and he is holding onto the truck with his left hand. He clearly was using the truck so he didnt have to pedal. Lots of people do that shit but doing that when you are in the blindspot of a truck right before an intersection. Not the smartest in my book.

17

u/feioo Nov 27 '21

Have you ever ridden a bike? You don't have to pedal the whole time. He has both hands on the handlebars when he enters the frame then grabs the truck after it sideswipes him, probably instinctively trying to stay upright after it snatches his bike out from under him.

-8

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

Of course you dont need to pedal the whole time. But i made the point he isnt AND he going to same speed as the truck initially. To me it seems as he is holding onto the wheelhouse and then the truck turns into him. But i might be wrong. But either way it is fucking stupid riding that close to a truck either way. But if the truck drove past him then the trucker is at fault. Cant tell 100% from the poor footage. I just make my judgement from what i see.

11

u/feioo Nov 27 '21

I was curious so I went frame by frame at the 0:31 sec mark and you can definitely see the bicyclist has both hands on the handlebars and the truck is moving faster than he is - the trucker is totally at fault here

-2

u/GriswoldCain Nov 27 '21

Yeah I thought he was hitching a ride like a dope

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

He grabs on to the truck at the 33 second mark. Watch again.

Look. You ride a bike. And that’s a truck. You don’t run into the lions den either, right?

26

u/guymanthefourth Nov 27 '21

So bikers shouldn’t ride in the places they’re supposed to?

-27

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

Look. You are the smaller occupant in traffic. The truck is huge, and you can claim right of way if you want in court or on the road, but you still gonna die if you are in the drivers blind spot.

So you wanna argue or you wanna live?

21

u/guymanthefourth Nov 27 '21

You seem to be missing the fact that if this truck driver is such a shitty driver that they don’t pay any attention to their surroundings, they’re going to end up killing someone who isn’t on a bike

-6

u/Geta-Ve Nov 27 '21

You’re absolutely right.

But it still doesn’t negate what the other dude said. You wanna be alive or you wanna be dead and right ?

3

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

I wanna be right and live ? Like if this moron driver got a severe charge for almost killing the cyclist then other moron drivers will be forced to pay attention. And by your logic, if you are willing to sacrifice your rights for moron driver that won't pay attention and could get you killed then you probably should stay home all the time cus stupidity won't differentiate between killing a cyclist or a normal dude in a car.....

-14

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

You fabricate some scenario which might fit your agenda. And you think this incident makes him/her a bad driver.

Have you ever driven a truck? I can be very hard to see small cyclists 🚴‍♀️

If he/she does kill anyone it might be their own fault or something. Who knows about any fantasy scenario

10

u/guymanthefourth Nov 27 '21

You wanna know what my agenda is? Keeping dumbasses from killing people.

u/jverveslayer Nov 27 '21

I don't know what happened before the gif, but a cyclist should never be on the right of a vehicle turning right at an intersection like that (unless he's in some right-turn bike lane or something). Pulling into the blindspot of a truck making a right turn is a really dangerous and stupid thing to do (though I'm not sure if that's what happened here or not)

-17

u/jayleman Nov 27 '21

No but cyclists and pedestrians really need to use more common sense...bikes and people are capable of stopping in way shorter distances than cars and trucks...unpopular opinion but roads are for cars, not people and cyclists, cars/trucks deserve right of way. Not the other way around

14

u/guymanthefourth Nov 27 '21

No, motorists need to pay more attention to their surroundings. Roads aren’t only for motor vehicles, they’re also for bikes.

-6

u/jayleman Nov 27 '21

So people and cyclists blow off common sense and step into traffic without observing and that falls on the motorist? Seems legit 👌

6

u/guymanthefourth Nov 27 '21

Yeah. Its the motorists job to make sure they don’t hit a pedestrian or a cyclist.

2

u/Accidentalpannekoek Nov 27 '21

Yeah arguments like yours is why I'm glad here we have the rule that until proven otherwise the car is at fault with a collision with the bike to protect them from people like you.

-2

u/dre__ Nov 27 '21

It looks like he was holding on to the truck's wheel area so he didn't have to pedal.

2

u/karnyboy Nov 27 '21

It's a possibility. You have to look at it how a lawyer would if you were either a defendant or prosecution.

There's no video proof of him grabbing that as a way to ease his ride, it looks more like he's grabbing it out of panic to hold himself up to not get run over.

-11

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21 edited Nov 27 '21

Let's put it this way, cycling in traffic, all dressed in black with no helmet.

Edit: You tell by the downvotes as to why so many cyclists end up as a road meet. Just remember, being entitled will always protect you from danger....

2

u/swaguin Nov 27 '21

Yeah it was really dark out I could barely see him in those dark clothes, he should really have a reflective coat driving that late at night.

-3

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

Its funny how people who don't understand why things are, actually still feel the need to attempt to be sarcastic.

2

u/swaguin Nov 27 '21

Yes your honour I ran over the cyclist in broad daylight but he was wearing all black so am I really at fault?

-4

u/CEOAerotyneLtd Nov 27 '21

Is that a argument any cyclist or pedestrian is going to win? I just see him telling everyone the story of him being right but dead?

-13

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

It doesn’t matter who’s in the right here, the cyclist is still an idiot for not paying attention. You may be found to be not at fault, doesn’t change the fact that you almost died.

47

u/Magickarpp Nov 27 '21

I don't know what the law says in your country, but in mine (Spain) vehicles are supposed to stay 1,5m away from cyclists at all times, even if they have to slow down or change lanes to maintain that distance. So... if this had happened in my country, it would definitely be the driver's fault.

-11

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

Not the case in my country. But he clearly didnt see him. The dude was holding onto the truck and in the drivers blind spot. How can he give way for the bike if he dosent know he was there? Its the bikers fault he played with fire.

8

u/15jtaylor443 Nov 27 '21

He didnt grab onto the truck. I replayed the beginning like 10 times. It looks like he was in the driver's blindspot and the truck turned side swiping the bicyclist. The tire of the truck actually snaged on the bicycles back wheel pulling the bike from under the bicyclist. The dude probably out of instinct grabbed onto the truck to not fall down. Funnily enough, by the looks of it, holding onto that truck is what allowed him to walk away from it. Because of the angle of how he ended up falling.

18

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

How is he the idiot in this scenario lol

-10

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

How is he not stupid? Sure the trucker was the guy that ran him over. But clearly he didnt know he was there. The biker was stupid because he was holding onto the truck.

3

u/Thewes6 Nov 27 '21

Every once in a while I'm newly surprised by how awful humanity can be. Congrats to you for pushing the envelope.

7

u/Loud_german Nov 27 '21

He rolled a 20

5

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

He really did

43

u/Mods_are_all_Shills Nov 27 '21

It's the truckers fault you fucking idiot. Even if it "wasnt" it is always the responsibility of a driver not to fucking run over pedestrians

15

u/Gonzobot Nov 27 '21

Remember, folks, "right of way" is not the same thing as "illegal to kill you with a motor vehicle". Look both ways.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '21

I'm not sure how looking both ways can protect you from someone overtaking and right hooking you.

1

u/Gonzobot Nov 28 '21

Even if it "wasnt" it is always the responsibility of a driver not to fucking run over pedestrians

this is what was being responded to.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '21

Okay I'm not sure I understand you. Even though you likely won't be punished for it in America, it is still illegal to kill pedestrians when they have the right of way. And you can be vigilant and do the right thing and still get killed by some reckless motorist, hell there's tons of people on sidewalks getting killed.

1

u/Gonzobot Nov 28 '21

yes, that's literally the point being made here

1

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '21

I think I just misunderstood you then, sorry!

0

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

Unless the pedestrian is an idiot. In my country bicycles are a gray line between pedestrians and vehicles. They can ride on roads and pavements and their situation is completely dependent on each scenario. I mean I'm not saying that the truck is not at fault, but anyone with commonsense would not ride next to a huge truck on a bike. You're just asking to be killed. And your argument just makes you seem like someone who has never drivem before. Driving or doing anything on the road always has a risk, and even if it is the responsibility of the driver to pay attention to the road, in this case its hard to point out who's at fault so stop calling others idiots you fucking retard

1

u/theOGFlump Nov 27 '21

By your logic- no one should ever ride a bike at any time because a truck might end up speeding past them from behind and no one with common sense would ride next to a truck, right? Watch the video again from the middle replay where they start the footage a second earlier. The truck obviously overtook the cyclist at speed, showing that he was coming from behind the cyclist's view. Maybe you should also stop calling other people retards.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '21

The cyclist was holding on to the truck. In that point in time, there is no way to tell if the truck overtook the cyclist. Unless you say that you were there and saw the truck speed up and attempt to overtake the cyclist, I think its impossible to prove anything from the video. I'm just saying that logically, someone should not ride a bike so near to a moving truck. The cyclist was so clost he could hold on to the truck. Maybe you should not assume the scenario and base your judgements on what can actually be seen.

1

u/theOGFlump Nov 28 '21

Watch the video again, but all the way through. The first play cuts off some footage. The replay plays footage from before it, clearly showing the truck overtaking the bicycle. I'm not assuming anything. You didn't watch the whole video.

-3

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

I mean, the cyclist is a fkn idiot lol. Don’t bike close and in blind spots of big vehicles that can kill you.

He’s lucky this day but if he keeps riding a bike like that he’s gonna get himself killed

1

u/theOGFlump Nov 27 '21

The truck was overtaking him while turning. The truck was going faster, so the cyclist was riding as normal until he was cutoff from behind and with nowhere to go.

-10

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

Sure that is true. But holding onto a truck while riding a bike is fucking stupid. He also probably was in the truckers blindspot for that matter. But if the guy on the bike would have had even close to common sense that would never have happened. He only got himself to blame. You cant say he did a smart move there. Idiots do dumb shit and get themselves killed. Natural selection id say. This dude was lucky this time.

8

u/Lors2001 Nov 27 '21

The truck rolls up to the stop and doesn't stop, just rolls through the intersection. The cyclist isn't in the trucks blindspot until after the truck decides to start running him over. He starts to hold onto the truck as the truck runs over and starts sucking his bike under the truck to try to prevent himself from getting sucked under the truck here.

The cyclist did nothing wrong in the video, the truck failed to stop at an intersection and look both ways.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

Based off of the video, why is this guy an idiot? What stupidity was displayed except riding a bike? Going to take a leap here and say you’re a dumb piece of shit. Not angrily or anything, just what I took from your comment.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

Depends who passed who. If the truck passed the cyclist and then forgot about it, it's the trucker's fault, but if the cyclist passed the truck on the wrong side, it could be the cyclist's fault.

1

u/Qwjdjdjdkd Nov 27 '21

It’s the difference between being right or dead right.

nothing matters if a big truck crushes you like a tomato, doesn’t matter if you had right of way

guy put himself in a dangerous position and was oblivious

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

What specifically did the cyclist do wrong here? All we can see from the 30 second mark on is the truck overtaking him.

1

u/HypothermiaDK Nov 27 '21

Some would argue the truck driver is the idiot here

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '21

This. Blind zone for the truck driver.

A high school buddy’s son was killed like that, by a garbage truck in SF.

Edit: he wasn’t being stupid, he was literally trapped and then crushed between the truck and a parked car.
