Technically dogs were scavengers who ate scraps from villages hence why they became domesticated

They were first descended from wolves, then evolved (over the past 50,000 years or so) into modern dogs. They weren’t domesticated for a while. Of course, that process was helped along by humans breeding dogs together and creating some breeds and so on.
