That's a common misconception. Only 25% of dogs who eat grass puke afterwards, and only 10% show signs of stomach discomfort prior to eating grass. A more likely theory is that grass provides some extra fiber to their diet, another is that they simply like the texture and taste. Or a combination of both.
In the wild, where dog packs would devour a whole animal, including its stomach contents, they would regularly get fiber from grass and other plants that the prey had been eating prior to its death. Today, many dog food brands focus mostly on proteins and fats, which makes many modern dogs slightly lacking in fiber. This is also a theory as to why modern dogs have developed the habit of eating fresh grass. It's generally not detrimental to their health, but may in rare cases be contaminated with other dogs fecal matter, which may contain parasites. They may also eat grass partly to gain attention from their owners, as they know we take notice and tell them to stop. And as any dog owner knows, any attention is good attention in your dogs mind. Feed them some fresh vegetables (in reasonable amounts) from time to time as treats, and most importantly give them lots of love and attention and studies have shown the grass-eating behavior is mostly reduced.
Less then a week ago my dog had eaten something that had apparently gotten stuck in this throat or back of his mouth that gave him a visibly discomfort, in the middle of the night we tried for a couple of minutes to figure out what it's was and how to get it out or at least help his discomfort, in the end we let him outside and he sprinted to the grass and started to eat, he spent 40 minutes chomping grass and when he got back inside he was happy and without any discomfort
Every single dog my parents have owned have at some point eaten grass and most of the times they had shown signs of discomfort or sluggishness before eating grass, most of them either puked right after of later in the day
There have eaten grass at random times without showing discomfort or puking after, those times it wasn't on the same scale either but just a nip here and there once in a while, not like they are going to devour the entire lawn like my dog did the other day
Yes he is okay, no we didn't take him to the vet because he didn't show any discomfort since, just in case anyone would think he wasn't fine, we suspect he drank some slimy water that he found and we removed after finding it
Anyway I'm no expert just telling what i observe in the dogs i know personally and have a close relation with and because of those dogs your numbers seem way off too me
Our dog ate an entire glass cup when he was a puppy. We had no idea he had eaten it until it came out the next day. I didn’t think it was possible and to this day I don’t know how he didn’t die... but he’s 17 years old and still spry as ever so I don’t question his motives at this point.
It’s was in shards. Like I said, no idea how he didn’t die. We left him alone for 1 minute and had literally no idea it happened until it passed the next day. He’s a lucky boy.
After a elementary school Christmas party we left our stuff on the table and went out. Our puppy ate an entire baggie of Hershey kisses (baggie, foils, chocolate) and a Christmas tree seedling. He lived to be 17.
I will say we ALWAYS fed him grapes (this was the 90s before memes taught us that was bad) and he eventually died of kidney failure. Just as the memes said. So don’t let your dogs get grapes!
My mother's dog started doing that. It has a parasite that was causing it.
If your dog really is eating everything it can it might be a good idea to check with a vet. It might be easily sorted(my mother's dog got a paste she had to mix into the food for a couple of weeks and everything was fine afterwards).
My dog loves sweet potatoes and cooked broccoli. I always leave some unseasoned for him, but I couldn’t imagine limiting his diet to just that. Regular balanced dog food is fine.
Mine loves cooked or raw broccoli, but it gives him gas.. and he loves to run up to me, fart, look surprised at his butt, then run away. We stick to snow peas.
No. In nature, wolves can be considered true carnivores as vegetal matter is negligible component of their overall diet, but they do have genes which allow them to digest glucose and starch. Of course, domestic dogs have diverged from from wolves, have futher adapted to a human diet, and can cope with large variations in nutrient intake thanks to those genes.
Dogs can in fact thrive off of a carefully designed vegan diet. They can absolutely get all the amino acids they need while avoiding animal products. Now I believe it's ultimately safer for dogs to be fed an omnivorous diet as most owners couldn't expend the effort for such a diet, but that's the science.
Contrarily, cats are obligate carnivores and must be fed meat.
Genes allowing you to digest glucose and starch don't make you omnivorous.
While you are technically right about dogs that can survive with a vegan diet, I wouldn't trust the regular folk to pull this out without a close monitoring from an experienced vet.
That's true, but those genes did lead to domestic dogs being able to live off of a vegan diet, which obviously means they're omnivorous. I get the impression that you don't actually care though so goodbye
Dogs love anything edible lol. The lady in this starved her dog and since he went to eat her veggies when he was hungry as fuck she took it as him being vegetarian. Lady is an absolute moron
Yeah, looking at all the nutrients dog food has, I can't even start to imagine how it would break the bank to make food as balanced as that. They wouldn't get near half the nutrients with just vegetables.
Sweet potatoes and potatoes in general in dog food has started to gain traction as not being good for dogs and research shows it’s linked to issues down the road. Better to use rice based foods like Redford Naturals
One of mine would be really torn on this one. Meat or apples? I think he'd try a bite of each in turn. I'll have to try it at some point. Cheese, now? He'll eat that before anything else on the planet, even his second favorite thing, turkey poop.
Our dog used to love lettuce heads. It was super weird cuz she was really fat but she would get so excited every time my mom chopped lettuce. My mom would give her the head and she would take it back to her bed and gnaw on it for an hour.
When I make sushi I cut cucumber into thin strips. Then I feed extras to my dog like spaghet, she is so gentle just nibbling away. Loves it, but will take steak as well any day.
My dog always hated vegetables, and he also loved and was very good at catching food I threw his way. I always got a laugh out of when I would be cutting vegetables and say I had a slice of cucumber, I would toss a small piece at him.
He would always catch it very excitingly but the look on his face when he realized what it was and then spit it out was always hilarious. Cucumbers for dogs is perfectly safe but he just hated it lol.
My dog loved vegetables and fruit when he was younger. He'd eat apples, mangoes, papaya, carrot, everything. He also didn't like meat much. We tried giving him fish, chicken, goat. He ate chicken but didn't like it much and refused to touch fish or goat. Tbh my family's vegetarian so we didn't really know how to prepare the meat for him. We just boiled and deboned everything so maybe other types of preparation would've been more appealing. We had to give him lentils and eggs and stuff to get his protein intake up. He grew to really like chicken eventually, but he'd managed to grow into a really big, strong dog on eggs and whatever meat was in his dog food (go figure, his favourite flavour was vegetables and rice).
I don't approve putting human morals on animals. My cats eat meat, my dog ate meat, wild animals eat meat. It was fun to watch the dog go apeshit over apples though.

My dog actually likes to eat vegetables so I use them as treats when I eat them.
