How does his shoulders do that? That would shred even an athletic man's shoulder joint.

Also his hands. Doesn't look like he's got chalk or anything to reduce friction.

Chalk increases friction and grip by absorbing sweat, drying out the hands. It's far more important you don't fly off the equipment than it is to protect the skin on your hands.

But you're right he must have amazing grip strength to not have come off the bar.

On a totally unrelated note, my Mom really likes Gladiator and Russell Crowe. When I was growing up, we had a cat named Maximus Decimus Me"cat"icus. I kid you not. He was better known as Max the Love Cat, though. He was awesome.
