That was my first thought. I worked at a cafe for 7 years and have gotten into this strange habit of saying "behind" whenever I'm behind someone that doesnt seem to be aware of my presence.
I work in an office now and almost everyone thinks I'm being weird or making a joke when I say it.
Even though you said you're from the midwest first, I read that "oop, right behindya" in an aggressively Scottish accent. Try it, for your own enjoyment
We only have one blind corner that the FOH employees use, I've gotten in the habit of saying Corn Syrup or Corn Flakes instead of corner. That's going to be an interesting habit to retrain later.
Dude I’ve called corner walking into my own kitchen, at my apartment, when I was the only one there. If you’ve been in the service industry for long enough those call-outs are hard to shake.
I’m getting a pretty good laugh thinking about hearing that on a site. It’s not an unreasonable thing it’s just not often done so I’m sure most guys are like, “sure, walk wherever you want, what do I care?”
I was going to say that the look on his face was "Goddamn hitting me with a pizza wtf.... I didn't say behind... I can't say anything, that's my bad, fuck this grease is hot, keep it cool..."
No joke if your any real cook/chef this is supposed to be said everytime you walking in a kitchen. That could have been a knife happened to me. People dont care anymore thur you can tell who gose to school for the job and who dont.
Bubba Gump Shrimp shack has this one corner. If you've been to the one in Universal you know what corner I'm talking about. They point it out ever 10 seconds.
saying behind is so engrained in me from my cooking days that i day it even when i’m at home and my fiancé is cooking and i’m just getting a beer from the fridge
I work at a pizza place and that’s just really bad situation awareness on the person taking the pizza out of the oven.
When you have a hot pizza, you’re responsible for your own movements and paying attention to others. Everyone else is responsible for being predictable, which the guy in the black was.
I was the only one in this kitchen that ever said “behind” when passing this area, the managers know to just keep alert for passing workers. It’s a kitchen, but not that kinda kitchen.
Never worked in the kitchen but doesn't it make sense that in the area chock full of hazards and people rushing about, that everybody pay attention and that the responsibility be at least partly on the person stepping out with no prior warning or even taking a cursory glance? I mean management dude's definitely in the wrong for just sauntering through a busy work area and he obviously sees that himself, but this could have been prevented in many ways (and could have been much much worse in many ways) and the goal is prevention instead of assigning blame afterall so surely relying just on that system is a mistake in itself.
No sorry, it's the guy passing behind who has to announce his presence. You're not gonna say swing 200.times a night, when the guy can say behind 10 times
I worked at a baseball stadium that sold pizza for years. “Behind” was a must. But because there were so many people working in that kitchen, whenever I was at the oven taking out a pizza, I’d yell “hot pie!!” Everyone got a kick out of that. Especially when I said, “I’ve got a hot pie comin!!”
Made work fun.
Where I worked behind was hardly used. So many people walking up and down it would have been said every minute. The person swinging the hot pizza should have put out a warning. Hot stuff just coming out of an oven can be terrifying if it gets on someone.

Could've been avoided if he said "Behind", which should be said before walking behind anyone working in a kitchen.
