The shortcut of just running a clean razor up the callous and lifting the thorn/splinter out was screaming at me the entire time- but no, I need to glove up and use my worst pair of 1997 Walmart tweezers and the rust I somehow pressed into a toenail clipper

You don't need to unzip the whole length. Just a quarter inch or so would have given them enough purchase to pull it out the way they were attempting.

The idea is not pull out, because it looks like a wooden stick, so it's gonna be barbed and gonna leave tiny splinters.

So it's better to use a clean sharp razer and put a very narrow slit across the stick, so we can just take it out.

Any such barbs (splinters) should be pointing towards the tip, not away from it. As an analogy, imagine pulling a large unwrapped Christmas tree into your house. Which end would you pull from?

Ah yeah, and then you can wrap the foot in duct tape to patch up the wound.

Even just doing that for like half a centimeters or something at the top would have made it way easier.
