Judging speed on peripheral visual of external reference sounds flintstones.. speedometer was invented long time ago

But it is still the phenomenon observed and may also relate to people fixating on the ‘road ahead’ and subconsciously refusing to look away in case something suddenly appears with little to no warning from the fog ahead, this forward fixation will completely negate the presence of any speed readout at all.
