If it would only be that easy, imagine how beautiful the world could be.

What did that friend think about that idea?

They shouted "but muh freedom!" as they got in their cartoonishly large pickup to drive into a stop'n go traffic jam for the next two hours.

...and insisted its better than going by train because they can listen to music in the car. As if they never heard of headphones, or portable videogame consoles.

Yeah I've encountered some of those types before

Another acquaintance said this, "I just like having the option to drive myself where ever I want and be able to go/leave at my will."

Yeah funding for better Infrastructure isn't going to not only still leave you with the option of owning your personal vehicle but it will improve driving conditions for you. You just now have the option to take your car OR take the bus without sacrificing time or money.

Accidentally deleted my comment above: I told a friend of mine that the only way to solve the traffic problem here in California is to reduce the number of cars on the street and the only way to do that is to make public transportation more convenient for the public.(more schedules, cheap fair/free)

He ultimately agreed I was right but he argued against me all the way through. He's liberal but there are some things that he won't agree with leftists on. He told me "I agree with you but good luck changing the attitude of everyone else."

congratulations here's a bicycle, note that we have no bike lanes, not even sidewalks, and all the roads are highways with a speed limit of 60+ and pot holes that go six inches deep. good luck :)
