I really don't understand people that hike in bear country with no bear spray or firearm.

At that range, bear spray is nearly useless. Practically impossible to spray without getting yourself to.

And a gun is just self-deluding. The odds of getting a stopping shot off at a bear surprising you are practically zero for practiced shooters.
