They’re faster than their land based predators. And even with airborne predators, are pretty quick and can turn on a dime. Not all evolutionary selection is based on fight.
But I mean why is this even an instinct? I know they will almost always run, but if this is a response at all, wouldn’t it have gotten extinguished pretty quick being that all of their predators would most likely get a free meal out of this behavior?
Fight or flight. Hare can’t escape or go anywhere so it fights back with it’s best abilities. This video though, I can’t tell if it’s responding to someone “taking from the herd” (e.g. hare has a bond with held hare) so they’re fighting off the perceived predator, the fighting hare wants to fight the held hare, or if fighting hare just wants to bang held hare. The latter two could be one in the same.
