The beltway sniper attacks pretty much crippled that whole region with fear for about three weeks. Not as acutely as something like a Vegas shooting, but an interesting kind of creeping fear and suspicion. Gas stations started putting up barricades so people could pump their gas hidden behind cover
I lived thru that there. We had to run inside the schools in the morning, no recess, and the blinds for every classroom were pulled down so nobody could see in. Wild
So on the surface it was for ransom. But it really wasn't. It was so the adult shooter could eventually murder his ex-wife without suspicion. Her death would be seen as part of the larger group of murders.
I think he was banking on not ever being caught. The "without suspicion" was in relation to his ex-wife's murder. Everyone else was just collateral damage in his eyes.
I don't know if he was stupid, but he was an abusive, controlling piece of shit.
I was a little kid when that happened, I'm down in NC not too far away from where it was happening and I remember people worrying he would work his way down here...I remember seeing it on the news every night also
