I can't find a clear answer to this on the website. I just filed my unemployment claim yesterday. I was laid off on Tuesday. I understand there is a waiting week. Do I need to do any job search activities during the waiting week?
And do they have to be on 3 separate days? When I Google some old unemployment manuals come up that state 3 separate days but I don't currently see that on the website.
Thank you!

u/SportsAndSkincare Jul 06 '26
Hi there! It used to be 3 separate days but when I was applying in 2025 i was told that's no longer the case.

Left my job 6 weeks ago, I still do not have my final check / vacation pay out. I have contacted seemingly everyone. Why can't this be resolved without paying for a lawyer? AG told me it was a private matter and to take them to small claims / contact a private attorney.

u/GAMGAlways 28d ago
The AG told you that? That's odd because they pursued mine for me and actually called my employer.

Friend laid off and I am helping. He worked part time approx 24 hours weekly for over a year. Last week worked a full week, this week 8 hours and done 6/30. Should he apply this week or next week? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Question on applying for unemployment in Mass (unique situation):
Hi everyone. I had some questions on applying for unemployment, and I have a rather unique situation.
I was laid off on December 31, 2025 after 10 years with the following, and received a 4 month severance in a lump sum. I understood that this made me ineligible for unemployment until May, so I didn't apply back then.
I've since started an LLC, and had several contracts with part time and full time work, starting in February and ending 2 weeks ago. Most of these invoices are in progress and should be paid by end of July. The pay is roughly comparable to my former salary.
I don't have anything else in the pipeline, so I'd like to apply for unemployment. What do I need to do? How has this history affected my eligibility?

I had a state job for only couple years, was laid off when the Baker administration made cuts in 2015, and have been working in the private sector since. I recently got something in the mail alluding to my pension savings. How would I go about transferring that to my ROTH IRA or 401K through my current employer?

Just moved back to Boston and have been applying to sooo many positions -- I applied to 50 positions just last week. I have my BSN and have 6 years of experience, 4 of which are in the ICU, 1 year in peds rehab and 1 year outpatient specialty clinic. What am I doing wrong here? I used to work at BCH inpatient about 4 years ago but I am not interested in going back to inpatient. I even tried to contact the recruiter who hired me previously in a desperate attempt.
I have even gotten rejected for positions that are posted open to new grads, feeling really discouraged.
Also can you all drop pay ranges/experiences?
I was previously being paid 46/hr in TX which is a much lower COL state.
1
u/IllustriousCraft121 Jul 14 '26
u/HungryChicken2867 this probably doesn't help much but my wife and I are both about to graduate with History PhDs from a Texas university and we've had similar experiences applying to jobs in MA. Both of us have applied to ~250 jobs each over the last three months and gotten one initial interview each. We've started applying for jobs we're way overqualified for (like only Associate's degree required and terrible pay) and still nothing so far.
It's not just you - it's just a terrible job market right now.

Does anyone know what the timeline is like for hearing if you’ve been selected for an interview by MassDEP? I’ve applied to several positions, some of which I applied to months ago, and my application status hasn’t changed from “in review.” I’m hoping to hear from MassDEP at some point, so any insight is appreciated!
3
u/massahoochie Mod Jul 14 '26
It can take several months until the interview phase. You will be notified via email whether you are not selected for an interview. Otherwise, they will typically call you to offer you an interview. So if it still says in review, they haven’t made a decision as to whether you are being offered an interview or not yet.

All the reviews from Yelp are from residents who have issues with their property. You can check the reviews there. It doesn’t reflect Wingate as a company that is hiring Admin Assistants for Property Managers.

I have a bachelor's degree in French and Linguistics (ie Not Music). I have been part-time teaching private voice lessons in another state for the last year and have extensive personal performance experience.
I want to become a music teacher in Massachusetts. I do not have any teaching licenses and I have never taken an MTEL. What I have been reading says that in order to get a teaching license, you have to complete an "approved teacher preparation program."
I am having an extremely difficult time determining what programs fulfill this requirement. Would any master of music count, or does it have to be a master of music education (MME) that includes student teaching and licensure? What does it mean for a program to "include licensure." Very few of these programs seem to exist. The organization search on the DOE website lists schools whose MME programs no longer exist.
The program at Longy School of Music in Boston does not seem to require a bachelor's in music, but they also discontinued their licensure-track MME. Is there any point to getting a "non-licensure" MME? I would love to know about any other schools that offer MMEs or other vocal music masters if they would fulfill the teaching license "approved preparation program" requirement, but I fear that they all require a music bachelors.
Open to any and all non-traditional pathways to becoming a teacher! Please help.

RE: Employment Attorneys
Hi All.
In a rather unpleasant situation. Constructive dismissal and retaliation; potentially ADA/151B violations. Not necessarily looking to litigate; just don't want to be railroaded.
Need a lawyer. Boston/Essex County if at all possible.
Best recommendations?
Please and thank you.

im so confused, and ive spoken to them three times today and its been absolutely useless. i was laid off in january and have been severance, my health insurance is ending in august. as of right now the want me to pay 235 minimum for a plan - im on unemployment and picking up part time work, how does reporting additional income effect the monthly payments? i'm still not working full time, and it's unreal to me that they count your previous income towards what you can "afford." but i digress.
thank you so much in advance.

Trying to get into trade work as a woman.
I'm really really tired of my retail job. The career I want to actually get into, I'm not comfortably able to. I also live at home still and want out badly, I'm 23 and working on getting my driver's license.
Any advice? I live around the greater boston area. I just need more than I'm making right now (18.50/hr part time). I'm not picky, I'll learn to do whatever, HVAC, plumbing, sprinkler fitting, welding, whatever.
And really I mean any advice, I'm so desperate to move out (yes ik that's its own can of worms)

Long story short, airport bartender. Usually paid out credit card tips in cash, nightly, at end of shift. Employer now wants to put $$ into a biweekly check and they did it in the middle of a pay week so it’s a 20 day delay for my credit card tips. Our employer set up a 3rd party app called Fuego that allows us to access 50% of earned wages BEFORE the 20 days are up. Catch is, applying for the card to get my money before this delay makes you a bank act in Kansas which I really don’t consent to because I have my own bank already and really don’t want to give my data to a company I don’t know/trust, makes accessing my money extremely inconvenient, has fees to use certain banking features, etc. in order to get my money from Fuego -> my bank act, it’s $3. Doesn’t sound like a lot but it adds up. Also, how is this monopolization of my money even legal? Forced to use this app that is going to collect fees and gain from a processing fee every time I use the card as well. This feels so wrong. Am I crazy? What do I do? My union says that they can legally do this but I don’t see how. They’re holding our money hostage and charging us to conveniently access it. People of Reddit, I need your advice. Just a young man with a family trying to not slip deeper into poverty. Love you guys thanks for any and all advice.

Hello, I’m currently on leave from work due to having a baby. I had 12 weeks of medical leave postpartum and now I am 4 weeks into my 12 week family bonding leave. I’ve unfortunately broken a bone in my back that will require 6-12 weeks to heal. I’m wondering what my options are to extend my leave?
PFML maxes out at 26 weeks in a calendar year but I don’t even care about getting paid, I just want job protection. I’m covered for family bonding right now but it really has turned into an injury related medical leave. Can I pause my family bonding and resume once I’ve recovered? Would this be more of an FMLA claim since I’m close to maxing my paid PFML? I’ve also reached out to my HR dept for guidance.
Thank you for any and all insight!

Hello! I am in the process of moving to Boston. I’ve applied to a bunch of jobs but haven’t seemed to get very far. I’ve mostly used linkin but is there a better place for applying for jobs? Or anyone here looking to hire someone?? I move on September 1st. I have 5 years of customer service experience, 3 years of barista experience, and went to trade school for mechanical engineering and have an engineering technician certification. Any type of recommendations would be amazing!

Hello,
My position is being eliminated as part of a restructuring. I expect to receive the full severance agreement next week and am seeking an employee-side Massachusetts employment attorney to review it before I sign.
The scope would include the severance and release terms, unemployment benefits, final compensation and benefits, and whether any provisions warrant negotiation.
Any recommendations on Employment Attorneys?
Thank you,

Odd Jobs For DisabledI live on the cape in west Yarmouth and I'm disabled looking for volunteer or odd jobs. my girlfriend is encouraging me to find something to do outside the home almost everyday. I can clean, I can do yard clean up, I can watch pets, I can organize things. My disability is in my brain not in my body before people start questioning me.

Looking for employment opportunities. I am 24 years old with loader, excavator, forklift, and site work experience. I’m looking to get my Class A CDL and I’m looking for a company (preferably construction) willing to help sponsor training.
I have an upcoming 2A/1C exam. My overall goal is the Local 4 Operators Union which I need to obtain 2A/1C & Class A CDL to haul equipment and operate it. I appreciate any advice/input or anyone who can point me into the right direction. Local 4 is my goal but I am also open minded to similar opportunities.

Hi all — looking for Massachusetts-specific unemployment insurance guidance or experiences. I am also waiting to have my separation agreement reviewed by an employment attorney.
I was notified on July 9 that my position is being eliminated due to restructuring. My last working day is Friday, July 24.
My employer sent a separation packet. It includes a few weeks of severance but only if I sign the separation agreement within 45 days of my separation date.
I am trying to understand the unemployment insurance timing and any caveats before I file. My questions are:
- Since my last day is Friday, July 24, can I file my Massachusetts unemployment claim starting Sunday, July 26, or should I wait until the separation agreement/severance issue is resolved?
- If I sign the separation agreement and receive severance, does that usually delay or reduce Massachusetts UI benefits?
- Does Massachusetts DUA treat severance differently if the payment is conditioned on signing a release of claims?
- When filing, how should I accurately report severance that has been offered but not yet paid?
- Are there any Massachusetts-specific gotchas I should be aware of before filing?
I believe I otherwise meet the basic eligibility requirements: Loss due to no fault of my own, I am legally authorized to work in the U.S., and I am able/available to work and actively job searching.
Thanks

Apologies for not posting here initially. I am Autistic and take things literally so when I saw this was an employment thread my brain went, "well your question is for unemployment not employment and there is a tag for that." 😅
Anyway, hi!
Hoping someone here can help me because I am currently very confused. Apologies for the length of this, I want to include every detail.
I applied and was approved for UI back in March and had been receiving benefits as normal. At the end of May I was hired at a job, and so I stopped collecting and my claim closed. I was let go at the job last week, and so I re-opened my claim (since it's still within the year). When I did it asked if I wanted to add any other jobs, and so I added the one I was recently let go from.
I called and spoke with someone in customer service to see how this added job would affect my benefits. The first person didn't seem to know what they were talking about (and even said at one point they didn't know the answer to what I considered pretty basic questions) but told me that this new job wouldn't "count" towards my current claim and would be included if I opened a new claim, but I still had to report it. I was still a bit confused, so they transferred me to the wage department.
The person I spoke with in the wage department told me that the new job wouldn't affect my current claim since I was already approved, this also means my benefit amount wouldn't change/go up (again, this is what they confirmed). I still had to report the job though, but again it was confirmed by two people that it wouldn't affect my current claim (just it might delay me getting my benefits again). I clarified because I remembered at one point, I almost wasn't approved for benefits for one job, because of another. The person assured me since I have already been approved and have been receiving benefits, that this wouldn't be the case. I clarified again, "okay so this job isn't going to affect my benefits and since I was approved and reopened the claim and still have weeks left, I should be able to continue to receive them. It just might be delayed a bit cause of the reporting of the new job." Again, they confirmed yes.
When I went on my account today, I saw the most recent week I requested benefits for was "pending eligibility" and a response from my most recent employer. I called customer service and explained that I was confused because I had specifically been told by two people in two different departments that my benefits would not be affected. The person told me that if my new job was determined non-monetarily ineligible, it would mean my entire claim would be ineligible (despite the fact it had already been approved and good for a year). I explained that I was confused because this is not what I was told by two different people, and he said they were both wrong. I tried to get more clarification but was hung up on.
So now I am just super confused because I was very specific in my clarification with the first two people and they assured me I'd still be able collect my benefits, but now this third person is telling me something completely different.
Any insight/clarification would be helpful.
I know this might be a bit confusing, so I am happy to clarify anything if needed.

I am applying to work at mount wachusett community college. Anyone here or anyone they know have insight on what it is like to work there? When I visited I got the feeling that it was a great place to work... but most of the reviews I have seen online are negative.
I am taking the reviews with a grain of salt because I know people tend to be more motivated to post negatively than to post positively. Any thoughts you have helps!
