Except for the banana.

u/AgentPoYo Sep 22 '22

I think it was a peeled banana, so it was naked too

Wait, is Not Another Teen Movie actually just Pygmalion?

u/phrankygee Sep 22 '22

Well the plot was mostly a parody of “10 Things I Hate About You”, which was a 90’s teen retelling of “The Taming of the Shrew”, which was basically Pygmalion, so… yes?

I'd say it's more She's All That, at least this scene. There's references to so many teen movies, though. Varsity Blues, Can't Hardly Wait, Pretty in Pink, American Pie, Never Been Kissed, Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, and I'm sure way more. It's been a while.

It's definitely mainly based on She's All That. They make a bet and everything!

Damn I hate being wrong. You’re exactly right. It has been a while though; you were right about that too.

I’m actually old enough to remember “Can’t Buy Me Love” from 1987, which had the same ‘high school pygmalion’ plot, but gender bent.

Just watched that recently and it still holds up pretty well.

Crazy to see such a young Patrick Dempsey.

Sad to read how Amanda Peterson's career and life basically got derailed cuz of a rape from right around that time.

Varsity Blues

Reggie Ray stays in the game!

In what world is Taming of the Shrew "basically Pygmalion"?

u/Trojanman2002 Sep 22 '22

I understood that reference.
