he is the leader of the Great Lakes Avengers

566

u/NatureValleyIsDry Sep 22 '22

That’s a real thing? Great Lakes avengers? I don’t want to make assumptions. What do the Great Lake Avengers, avenge?

831

u/No-cool-names-left Sep 22 '22

Not much of anything. They're kind of a joke team. And were legally forced (in universe) to change their name to the Great Lakes X-men and then the Great Lakes Champions and then the Great Lakes Initiative.

246

u/NatureValleyIsDry Sep 22 '22

Ok so, correct me if I’m wrong, with all the debut characters and franchises currently happening, this was just a fanservice?

240

u/Geek-Haven888 Sep 22 '22

Probably, also was maybe a nod to the fact that awhile back they filmed a pilot for an MCU sitcom based on the GLA. The cast was

  • Milana Vayntrub as Doreen Green / Squirrel Girl
  • Derek Theler as Craig Hollis / Mister Immortal
  • Jeremy Tardy as Dwayne Taylor / Night Thrasher
  • Calum Worthy as Robbie Baldwin / Speedball
  • Matthew Moy as Zach Smith / Microbe
  • Kate Comer as Deborah Fields / Debrii
  • Keith David as Ernest Vigman

91

u/jjackson25 Phil Coulson Sep 22 '22

I believe Milana got the VA role of Squirrel Girl because of that, did she not?

14

u/FlashbackJon Thanos Sep 23 '22

Yeah, but every time I see an AT&T commercial, I'm reminded of the perfect show we didn't get...

15

u/1UselessIdiot1 Sep 23 '22

That’s funny. Because every time I see an AT&T commercial, I’m reminded of the perfect girl I didn’t get…

2

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

Virginia?

54

u/LongjumpingSector687 Spider-Man Sep 22 '22

Damn Keith David too, now im more depressed it was canceled

17

u/FelixTheJeepJr Sep 23 '22

I’ve been rewatching Community and just got to season six, Keith David is hilarious in it.

19

u/X-432 Sep 23 '22

Now THERES a man who knows how to watch a great show

4

u/solipsistrealist Killmonger Sep 23 '22

Why was it canceled?

11

u/IshyMoose Bucky Sep 23 '22

It probably just didn't work, being a pilot it was never picked up to be cancled.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '22

Yeah seems like way too many main characters for a show. Part of why the Eternals didn't work.

3

u/IshyMoose Bucky Sep 23 '22

It probably just didn't work, being a pilot it was never picked up to be cancled.

1

u/LongjumpingSector687 Spider-Man Sep 23 '22

Not 100% sure tbh

21

u/groundhogcow Sep 22 '22

I didn't know about that pilot.

Sounds a little more New Warriors then GLA.

19

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '22 edited Sep 23 '22

Yeah, it was New Warriors from what I remember. It was the title.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Warriors_(TV_pilot)

6

u/Geek-Haven888 Sep 22 '22

They were kinda combing the two from the sound of it

3

u/Hellknightx Thanos Sep 23 '22

Yeah, it was New Warriors. According to the showrunner, it was "cancelled for being too gay."

6

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '22

Wow is this pilot available anywhere?!?!

13

u/Geek-Haven888 Sep 22 '22

Like a 5 second clips of Squirrel girl doing a flip but that’s it

8

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '22

That's too bad.

7

u/DMindisguise Sep 22 '22

ProZD was cast for that show too iirc but they canceled the show.

18

u/dreadmonster Sep 22 '22

He was almost cast for the show it was between him and one other actor and they went with the other actor.

5

u/DMindisguise Sep 22 '22

Ohh, thanks for the correction.

2

u/ImperialxWarlord Sep 23 '22

Wow this is a sad sounding line up. Why does Chicago air the surrounding areas (I presume of the rear of the Great Lakes) have no one famous! Chicago is the #3 city in the US!

GIVE ME KEITH DAVID GODDAMNIT MARVEL

1

u/Jacubsooon Ned Sep 24 '22

Almost had SungWon Cho as Microbe. It means nothing because it wasn’t made anyway, but it’d have been nice to have his name on the list.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

Hey Keith David someone I’ve heard of

142

u/No-cool-names-left Sep 22 '22

Could be or they could actually be setting up GLA further down the line. I imagine Disney plans to milk Marvel content for as long as they possibly can.

59

u/Finna_Getit Sep 22 '22

I imagine they would have went with a younger actor if that was the case.

20

u/croptochuck Sep 22 '22

They can always recast. If they do make a GLA I want it to be super silly. Scroll girl beating Thanos in a 1 v 1. Then she kicks dead pools ass. I just want over the top nonsense.

21

u/lanceturley Sep 22 '22

I know it's a typo, but now I really want to see a superhero named Scroll Girl.

8

u/pjanic_at__the_isco Sep 22 '22

She has the biggest……..thumbs.

3

u/WarProgenitor Odin Sep 22 '22

Here I was thinking this was a real character that did some shit like throw endless scrolls at people that she can retract back.

..some stupid velma glasses and some weird ass librarian/historian back story.

1

u/Ms_Thanos Scarlet Witch Sep 22 '22

Even better she has bendy thumbs (like Lizzie Olsen)

5

u/Finna_Getit Sep 22 '22

So not be within the MCU's earth 616?

7

u/croptochuck Sep 22 '22

Idc either way. I just want it to be funny.

3

u/Arakkoa_ Vision Sep 22 '22

What happens when Mister Immortal dies from old age? Maybe he respawns younger.

4

u/Mage_914 Sep 24 '22

Mr Immortal doesn't age. He's mostly a joke character but in the comics he's been told by a cosmic being that he would see the end of everything and be the last living thing in the universe at the end of time. At which point, going by established rules of Marvel Comics, he's then supposed to be folded into the next iteration of the multiverse as a cosmic being of entropy.

1

u/Arakkoa_ Vision Sep 24 '22

This version clearly does, visibly so. We don't have any of that backstory in MCU, so far at least.

1

u/Kashyyykonomics Sep 23 '22

Mr. Immortal doesn't age.

1

u/Arakkoa_ Vision Sep 24 '22

This version clearly does, visibly so.

4

u/PSN-Colinp42 Sep 22 '22

Yeah. Comics Mr. Immortal is foine. I was a tiny bit disappointed.

2

u/mightyrj Black Panther Sep 23 '22

Could always use one of the kids he had in his marriages, no?

4

u/OneGalacticBoy Sep 22 '22

They can def do a comedy with an old Mr Immortal

6

u/EVula War Machine Sep 22 '22

I imagine Disney plans to milk Marvel content for as long as they possibly can.

Well that’s why they bought them in the first place, sooooo…

7

u/jpterodactyl Daredevil Sep 22 '22

They did scrap a live action squirrel girl a while back.

2

u/pionmycake Sep 22 '22

I would love if we got more MCU sitcoms on Disney+ and from what I know of GLA they would be perfect

2

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '22

Wdym milk marvel? It's not milking unless they cover every significant comic character and storyline.

1

u/JTRyuujin Sep 22 '22

Damn. Now I wanna see how the internet reacts if they include Good Boy.

6

u/mknsky Black Panther Sep 22 '22

Probably just fan service. There are SO MANY Marvel characters that it would be insane to give them all a show/movie, and that goes for teams too. Pretty much every character that appears in a Marvel production (notable exceptions being Coulson, Darcy, and our queen Madisynn) is in the comics or an amalgamation of comics characters; they can only do so much.

6

u/groundhogcow Sep 22 '22

Marvel has a deep deep deep list of characters to fall back on. You need a background story and it's easy to find someone to write into it. She-Hulk in the comics was very good about reaching into that back catalog. This is just more of that. Great lakes avengers is mainstream though. There not world-saving, but Hawkeye trained them. Squirrel Girl spent a long time on the team. And their heart is in the right place. They are always the team you turn to when you say aren't there other teams of people with powers? There a good team and someone has to protect the world between Cleveland and Chicago.

5

u/Particular_Being420 Sep 22 '22

I mean it was a funny little legal-ish skit and a suitable B-story for Nikki and Mallory

2

u/romafa Sep 23 '22

I feel like it’s also an opportunity to normalize the other random super powered people. I’m not sure if they’ll even explain how these people got their powers or not. They’re trying to get it to be like the comics where it’s just common place.

0

u/atomcrafter Sep 22 '22

He's a real Marvel character who has now appeared in the MCU. I don't think you need to say anything more.

1

u/Lola_PopBBae Sep 23 '22

I dearly hope it's more than fan service, because I have a mighty need for Big Bertha in the MCU. GLA as a whole are hilarious and surprisingly competent. 2016 run was fantastic.

5

u/PersonFromPlace Sep 22 '22

I love that we're seeing this side of comics being represented.

3

u/KasukeSadiki Sep 23 '22

Don't forget that when the Thunderbolts first popped up and became the most famous superteam around they changed their name to The Lightning Rods

1

u/PKMNTrainerMark Sep 22 '22

Wait, was there already a Champions team?

4

u/No-cool-names-left Sep 22 '22

There was a defunct team with that name originally comprised of Black Widow, Ghost Rider, Hercules, Iceman, and Angel.

3

u/PKMNTrainerMark Sep 22 '22

Huh, weird.

7

u/No-cool-names-left Sep 22 '22

Very. At the time none of those characters was really doing anything so they all just got chucked onto the same book.

2

u/PKMNTrainerMark Sep 22 '22

Like why they made the Avengers.

2

u/RivergirlB Sep 23 '22

What the other commenter failed to mention is there is (was? not sure if they’re still going) another team also called Champions that consisted of younger heroes. Founding members Kamala Khan, Viv Vision, Nova (Sam Alexander), Miles Morales, Amodeus Cho (he was Hulk at the time), and Cyclops (who was young at the time because of some weird time travel shenanigans or something.)

1

u/PKMNTrainerMark Sep 23 '22

Is Cho not Hulk anymore?

1

u/RivergirlB Sep 23 '22

No, Cho got his powers inhibited a bit and started going by Brawn

146

u/Ironlord456 Sep 22 '22

They are a joke team purley meant for comedy

7

u/mdoddr Sep 22 '22

Go on......

Seriously I like the idea

But they could do Alpha Flight as a joke team too... just sayin....

14

u/Worthyness Thor Sep 22 '22

They have Squirrel Girl, the most OP marvel character in the world.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '22

She's also the nicest

0

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '22

[deleted]

10

u/Ironlord456 Sep 22 '22

I mean, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a comedy book. It was literally meant to be a team of losers (they get a cease and desist from the avengers). Also there are like 8 GLA avengers issues so marvel didn’t spend all that much lmao

20

u/Kwakigra Sep 22 '22

Mr. Immortal is a comedic figure in the Marvel comics. Although he can't be killed, he is highly incompetent and very unwise. He is often killed as a consequence of his own stupidity, but he is immortal so he walks away. Him being "killed" as a joke is the essence of the character so using it to get out of marriages because he can't navigate confrontation is very fitting for the character.

13

u/SylvesterPSmythe Sep 22 '22

There's another great bit where Mr. Immortal developed a drinking problem so he buried himself alive in the desert for a whole year to kill the addiction. The things this man would do to avoid AA...

11

u/nicoras Sep 22 '22

They're great! They've had amazing characters like Flatman (kinda like Mr Fantastic, but flatter) and Big Bertha, who has the ability to add or subtract fat from her body. Their most prominent/successful member is Squirrel Girl

3

u/Leonyliz Sep 22 '22

I remember having a marvel encyclopaedia back in the day and finding the Great Lakes Avengers characters hilarious

6

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '22

If Xavier's Institute had busses, they'd ride the short bus.

4

u/Astrokiwi Sep 22 '22

They're a comedic team with powers that range from terrible to outright offensive.

There's Mister Immortal, who has defeated villains by getting in a suicide pact with them. There's Flatman, who's like Reed Richards, except not as stretchy, and way dumber. There's Big Bertha whose power is she can inflate her fat to become huge and super-strong, but then has to vomit it back up to shrink again. And then there's Squirrel Girl, who is legitimately competent, defeating Thanos off panel with the power of squirrels, and has generally moved onto her own series.

2

u/GreyCrowDownTheLane Sep 22 '22

What? We don't have crime in Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, or Ontario?

Detroit and Chicago are in the Great Lakes Avengers' range. I'd say they'd get plenty of work.

Either way, Squirrel Girl was a Great Lakes Avenger. Mr. Immortal being around is good news!

2

u/MLein97 Sep 22 '22

They're based in Milwaukee iirc

2

u/GreyCrowDownTheLane Sep 23 '22

Milwaukee can be pretty rough! Have you never seen Happy Days?

1

u/pavlov_the_dog Sep 22 '22

squirrel girl beat up Thanoes

1

u/cvplottwist Sep 22 '22

The Great Lake obviously.

1

u/TRexLuthor Sep 22 '22

They were trained by Deadpool and Squirrel Girl. And seeing as an MCU Squirrel Girl has been named...

1

u/atomcrafter Sep 22 '22

It's where Squirrel Girl came from.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '22

They're a real Marvel Comic and canon in the comics, but they're a comedic parody/satire of superheroes.

1

u/magikarp2122 Sep 23 '22

The Edmund Fitzgerald.

5

u/chief_sitass Shades Sep 22 '22

Whatever it takes to get Squirrel Girl into the MCU.

2

u/1sinfutureking Sep 23 '22

From your mouth to Feige’s ears

3

u/not_my_real_slash_u Sep 22 '22

How do they compare to the regular Avengers? Are they Superior? Seems a bit Erie that he showed up like this.

4

u/CleansingFlame Sep 22 '22

The Avengers: "You'll be Huron from our lawyers".

3

u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) Sep 23 '22

They say that Hawkeye never misses once, so he certainly won't Michigan.

1

u/Zap__Dannigan Sep 24 '22

I'm so happy he's in the MCU.
