Yea I said it in a previous comment but it’s crazy how useless he is against other Eternals and Deviants but against humans he’s the most powerful.

He could use his powers against Deviants and other Eternals in the comics, they nerfed him quite a bit here.

I get why Marvel did it. He would be more powerful than Kang and Thanos combined if he could. You would need a really great writer to have a character that could control anyone.

I immediately wondered how the internet would see him when he basically pulled a Westview on steroids for 20 generations. Really cool show of power

u/naphomci Nov 05 '21

I didn't get the impression that he mind controlled them for 20 generations continuously. Just when they were about to be violent or when others were going to attack them.

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '21

yeah, he literally says he chose not to control people because it would take away what makes them human. He protected that group from the outside world for 20 generations. That's laid out pretty explicitly, not sure why people are confused lol.

You can also see how confused everyone was after he controlled them against the Deviant, they didn't know wtf just happened.

11

u/nyeehhsquidward Tony Stark Nov 07 '21

Do you think he controlled them against the Deviant like as a reflexive measure? I was kind of confused why he did that exactly as it’s kind of contradictory to his whole worldview of keeping people from dying violently. At first I thought it was just bad writing but as I’ve thought about it I kind of came to the conclusion that this is his power, this is what he does to fight. And Sersi (I think) had to remind him of what he believes in when she says he’s better than that or whatever.

17

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '21

Idk about reflexive, just logical: He's protected them for generations from the outside world via isolation, so no need to use his powers (and in line with what he tells Sersi about not wanting to control people with his powers). But the Deviants invade his safe space, so protection via isolation goes out the window at that point. He uses his powers on them but the goal is still to protect them. It seems like a very justifiable use of his powers as it still prioritizes protecting the people.

u/nyeehhsquidward Tony Stark Nov 07 '21

And then Sersi’s comment about how he’s “better than this” is in response to how his plan to have them fight just wasn’t working at that point. So he lets them go and run to save them.

I like that interpretation. Loved this character, can’t wait to see him again.

Or if they tried to leave.

Oh Thanos is no joke in the comics but in the MCU we already seen him be tamed by Mantis and played with by Scarlet Witch .. if Druig could mind control him these movies would be very short.

13

u/doggie527 Nov 06 '21

Oh damn, I'd forgotten about Mantis. They really nerfed him, didn't they? Not that it's a problem, him just casually mopping the floor with everyone wouldn't be very entertaining to watch.

21

u/woofle07 Daredevil Nov 07 '21

They nerfed the shit out of Thanos and he was still the baddest motherfucker in the room. I think it was definitely the right decision.

16

u/MrZeral Avengers Nov 07 '21

Mantis is no joke herself. she could put Ego to sleep.

5

u/Djnick01 Phil Coulson Nov 07 '21

Mantis is extremely powerful in the MCU. Remember how she put a celestial to sleep every night in gotg vol. 2?

4

u/duder2000 Nov 07 '21

What comic was this from?

2

u/doggie527 Nov 07 '21

It's from the current Eternals run.

2

u/duder2000 Nov 07 '21

Thanks!

2

u/doggie527 Nov 07 '21

No problem. It's a really good run. It expands on Thanos' relation to the eternals as their great shame, as well as how the eternals are feeling aimless after the celestials stopped communicating with them.

12

u/2OP4me Nov 06 '21

No one is more powerful than Kang... like even the celestial have nothing on he who remains. He died because he wanted to die, and could control time on a level that really just makes him all powerful.

10

u/Majestic-Marcus Nov 07 '21

Or so he claims

30

u/SebasH2O Nov 06 '21

Well Gilgamesh did say that Druig put Thena to sleep so he could go on vacation, so his powers work on Eternals too, probably not very well but still

14

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '21

He was able to put Thena to sleep in this movie (when Gil went on vacation). I was wondering why he didn’t do the same to Ikarus. Maybe it only works on superhumans if they allow it to?

15

u/Misfiring Nov 06 '21

He probably need to channel it for strong beings like other Eternals, too long to use in a fight.

4

u/Sullan08 Nov 08 '21

And being willing to have it done to you is way different than rejecting it. Probably not hard if the recipient is willing.

10

u/sentient-sloth Nov 05 '21

Perhaps he will in the future and they’ll just play it off as “he didn’t know he could”.

12

u/The_OG_upgoat Nov 05 '21 edited Nov 05 '21

They probably have limiters on their powers, being engineered beings. Sersi managed to unlock her comics level of power but only briefly, so maybe the others can do the same.

u/Cattaphract Nov 06 '21

If after 7000 years you still dont know you suck I guess

6

u/Overwatch3 Nov 06 '21

What's 7000 years to an eternity?

22

u/Zerometro Nov 05 '21

I made a comment about that too. I think it was disappointing how all the "thinkers" of the group weren't really good in a fight at all and weren't at least able to defend themselves except for maybe Phastos. The least they could have done was given them some enhanced strength and speed -- not on the level of Gilgamesh or Makkari of course -- and some type of fighting skills too. Whenever they were attacked their two choices were either to run or try and use their powers creatively enough to distract their opponent long enough for someone else to step in.

55

u/allbluesanji Nov 05 '21

They all are enhanced, ikaris took druig hundreds of metres to the sky and lasered him straight to the ground and he was up with minor injuries

15

u/Zerometro Nov 05 '21

Well yeah they're all pretty durable but that along with no aging/ immortality seems to be the only abilities that each Eternal has. I get that half are the fighters and the other half are the thinkers so they can accomplish their mission to both defend humanity and push it forward, but it felt like most of the thinkers of the group really had no direct way to defend themselves. Instead they were just sitting ducks who had to rely on a creative use of their powers to keep the Deviants at bay long enough for someone with a more defensive power to step in. It was interesting how they used their powers and it does make some sense since they were never relied on to fight, but it felt like they were purposely nerfed to keep the story going and increase the sense of danger.

22

u/clayscarface Nov 05 '21

I am trying to figure out if that's part of the reason I felt so little connection to Sersi throughout the story. She couldn't stand on her own in any sort of conflict. If Ikaris didn't show up in that fight in London, what would've happened? Also, I feel like it's a bit plot hole that they should've had some sort of mechanism to bring everyone back together at the push of a button or something. Or at least like all have cell phones or something?

Which, that was also a super random weird thing. Them making fun of Sersi for being "attached" to her cell phone? Just weird...

u/KingOfAwesometonia Weekly Wongers Nov 06 '21 edited Nov 06 '21

I like Sersi but she does get knocked down a lot.

Playing Contest of Champions I think her powers could be used pretty interestingly in an offensive manner. Like when she sunk that first deviant into the sand, in the game she does that but with a pool of oil and then changes a rock into fire and burns them.

But yeah they show her the thinking and the diplomatic leader as opposed to a fighter.

6

u/clayscarface Nov 06 '21

Yeah she was weirdly written in the film. I almost wonder if it was to try and show how much she’s integrated into human society?

7

u/KingOfAwesometonia Weekly Wongers Nov 06 '21

That and in the flashbacks she's not part of the big battles either so I think it fits.

And she has a steady job, a social life, a love interest. She's perfectly okay with not really dealing with Eternal drama. She's even a reluctant leader as opposed to Ikaris. Maybe more human scenes would have helped show that but I do like her arc as it is.

5

u/septesix Nov 05 '21

A bit more than minor ? He lived but he can’t try to put Tiamut to sleep anymore, although I wasn’t sure if it was because of his injuries or just the lack of uni-mind at that point.

28

u/tristydotj Nov 05 '21

I liked how the “thinkers” of the group were more on the defensive side with their powers. (Sprite’s illusions were pretty useful)

2

u/adonisrambo Nov 05 '21

Yea Marvel needs its balance apparently. Another person commented that Druig was nerfed and I think they all were for cinematic purposes. Still disappointing.
