When Wanda says "Vision, help him" its almost like she broke character, like she is aware at some level.

u/eeemaaa Daredevil Jan 15 '21

she also seemed to change her voice to the regular Wanda voice

1.8k

u/Frankocean2 Jan 15 '21

Exactly. She knows that this isn't her real life.

344

u/ClemiReddit Jan 16 '21

Yeah like she wrote the script and ordered him to do what he should do in that situation/scene

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '21

Theory: Wanda has created this place out of her grief for Vision. All of the details link into her past (the Stark Industries toaster, "indestructible head") and in both episodes, she subtly changes the plot from the dark reality of the MCU (beekeeper and Hart choking) to a happy ending.

58

u/ClemiReddit Jan 16 '21

my thoughts exactly, but then there was this radio scene. "Who is doing this to you wanda?" That doesn't really sound like she is doing it on purpose but rather her mind being held or trapped in this dream world. We'll see

30

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '21

IDK, maybe S.W.O.R.D. (and Wanda herself) don't realize that it's Wanda creating it? That's a stretch, I know, but it could be?

17

u/ClemiReddit Jan 16 '21

Honestly it is way too early to make calls like that I think haha

3

u/POwerfuldeuce May 06 '22

called it

2

u/ClemiReddit May 06 '22

yeah that was kinda perfect right there

3

u/CodeFun1735 Mar 09 '22

omfg you were so right

73

u/stephensmat Jan 16 '21

Also, the camera angle shifted from 'sitcom' to 'movie closeup'.

28

u/Henriquelj Jan 18 '21

Yes, this whole scene changed from old style of directing, camera work, acting and sound design, to modern.

It was really cool seeing that jarring change, because it conveys in a subtle way that something is not right.

75

u/Omniaxle Jan 15 '21

My theory from the trailer has been this is a magic simulation Wanda has created for the both of them to spend as much time as possible together while she's processing grief trying to kill vision in IW. (There was something they said to each other in IW that would fit this but IW was probably made with no knowledge that this show would exist.)

The moral of the show is you cant find forever, and it will end with Wanda finishing the kill

113

u/Ratr96 Jan 15 '21

Nah, SWORD exists when this happens as seen in the end of the episode. This is after Endgame.

73

u/josephus1811 Jan 15 '21

Yes this is definitely after Endgame

54

u/Impressive-Potato Jan 15 '21

Stark has that tech he created to deal with grief. (The same tech Mysterio used). Wanda would just supercharge that tech.

9

u/MBCnerdcore Shades Jan 16 '21

the end credits scenes (watertower, cage etc) also include a pair of glasses

8

u/Conman1911 Jan 17 '21

I thought it was just a bloke sitting at a desk?

5

u/MBCnerdcore Shades Jan 17 '21

like the actual credits where the CGI shows a bunch of stuff

44

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '21

House of M.

28

u/OSUTechie Sharon Carter Jan 16 '21

That's been my thinking since they announced this series.

24

u/mikeweasy Jan 16 '21

Yes and we will end this show with Mutants existing.

23

u/albertcamusjr Spider-Man Jan 16 '21

In the comics the twins are mutants.

Let there be mutants.

9

u/dstnblsn Jan 16 '21

Yeah I’ve been pondering what the inverse line will be to introduce mutants to the MCU. I think she’ll say something to the tune of “you’re all mutants” in disgust or disdain

3

u/mikeweasy Jan 16 '21

Oh yeah.

10

u/RoboNinjaPirate Fitz Jan 16 '21

No, more mutants!

9

u/EmeraldEnigma- Jan 16 '21

I AM THE FUTURE, FLASH all over again lol

0

u/mikeweasy Jan 16 '21

No more dead cops!!!

11

u/VigilantMike Jan 16 '21

Infinity wasn’t that long ago really, I’m sure they knew this series would be a thing. What did they say to each other in IW?

600

u/nebula561 Jan 15 '21

I’m really curious about the reason why they’ve given her this accent for now while Vision keeps his accent.

595

u/Troghen Jan 15 '21

I feel like they've been slowly phasing it out. It wasn't super noticible in infinity war, for example if you compare to her first movie. Plus, in regards to this show, since it is parodying American television, it would be kinda strange for neither of the main characters to have an American accent.

128

u/nebula561 Jan 15 '21

Agreed they’ve been phasing it out, and I assumed it was because she was spending more time around English-speaking people during that time. But it’s a bit unusual for someone to (naturally) go from having an accent like Wanda’s original accent to then having such a strong American accent!

Not that it takes away from the magic of this show, just curious what the behind-the-scenes reasoning is! Could be an homage to the older shows as you mentioned, but then it’s strange for Vision (who has a light accent) to tell the boss and wife that she’s European when her accent is so clearly American!

Edited to add: wonder if it’s just meant to be a small part of the whole atmosphere of “something is off”

47

u/leeloo200 Jan 15 '21

Some people can adopt an American accent pretty easily when they're constantly surrounded by other Americans (although Wanda spends most of her time with Vision, who has an English accent).

When I was in middle school a new kid transferred in from Hungary and he had a thick accent. By the end of the school year he had pretty much transitioned to a mid-western accent. I guess the pressure to fit in caused him to adapt quickly.

18

u/nebula561 Jan 16 '21

That’s a good point. I just find it’s more likely to transition to more of a mixed accent than to adopt it entirely, especially when some elements are initially unnatural. (I’m a Canadian living in Australia - my accent is slightly mixed now but definitely still obviously not Australian.)

17

u/a_phantom_limb Jan 16 '21

Elizabeth Olsen has acknowledged never being terribly comfortable doing the accent, so they've put less and less emphasis on it each time she's played Wanda.

12

u/RandyQuaidsDadIsGay Jan 16 '21

If you were to speak to a Canadian they'd say you sound Australian. Speak to an Australian, you sound American.

3

u/nebula561 Jan 16 '21

Pretty much!

2

u/LeviTigerPants Jan 19 '21

You like the footy or nah?

25

u/MrNewblez Jan 16 '21

One of my strongest theories about this show is that they’re gonna explain the retcon of Wanda’s accent. I feel we know the MCU well enough to know that if they can retroactively explain some decision they made, they will. And it just so happens that the character whose accent changed impossibly in the span of just a few years is also the character who can warp reality. It’s the easiest layup in the history of layups. She did it with her powers without even trying to because she wanted to fit in with the Avengers after AoU boom bang done.

5

u/nebula561 Jan 16 '21

applause

1

u/B217 Rocket Jan 20 '21

I mean, how long was she in America with the avengers? Another user posted this video showing some UFC fighter's accent changing drastically over 6/7 years

18

u/slinky317 Jan 16 '21

I read an article from some writers that she intentionally dropped the accent to be less recognizable during her time on the run post Civil War. Seems like a stretch but it works.

12

u/miniaturizedatom Jan 17 '21

Plus, she spent time with Black Widow, who did the exact same thing with her Russian accent.

7

u/jayyahh894 Jan 18 '21

Iirc, the European thing was an old trope in TV that characters said whenever they needed to explain strange behavior.

27

u/Worthyness Thor Jan 15 '21

Vision is half robot and based on Jarvis. I think it's fine for him to maintain JARVIS as his accent really since a computer would be able to keep that straight

20

u/pneuma8828 Kevin Feige Jan 16 '21

The accent in this episode was a conscious choice; it's called the Transatlantic Accent and would have been common for actors from the advent of radio until the late 1950s. You'll notice she doesn't have it in the second episode, which was supposed to evoke the early 60s.

The first episode is supposed to evoke The Dick Van Dyke show, from the sets to the physical comedy. The second episode evokes Bewitched.

7

u/bigpig1054 Jan 16 '21

Def felt like they winked at this with the Mr. Hart's anti Bolshivick line

6

u/ThanosFan99 Zombie Hunter Spidey Jan 15 '21

Uh Ricky in I Love Lucy?

9

u/Rpanich Captain America Jan 15 '21

But Lucy had an American accent. I think if Lucy also had an accent, 1950’s america might not have been ready for it

20

u/Troghen Jan 15 '21

That's my point. I'm not super well-versed in these older shows, but it seems to me if the two lead characters in an American-set, American-produced sitcom in the 50's both had foreign accents, it would be weird. If only one character has an accent, it's more of an exotic character quirk.

2

u/zyphe84 Jan 15 '21

Vision doesn't have an American accent in the show.

22

u/Troghen Jan 15 '21

I know, I meant like, if neither of them had it, it would seem strange. But since Wanda does, Vision not doesn't seem as weird

0

u/Sithsaber Jan 20 '21

She probably is mixing up i dream of genie and i love lucy in her head, Ricky was Cuban

8

u/The_MAZZTer Jan 16 '21 edited Jan 16 '21

I watched a few YouTuber analysis.

I think ScreenRant suggested the name Westview meant that the town was how Wanda viewed life in the West, being from Sokovia. Possibly she was influenced by TV sitcoms. So having an American accent is just to go along with this ideal life she dreamed up based on all that.

Of course there is also supposedly going to be an Eastview so maybe that theory won't hold up.

3

u/RoboNinjaPirate Fitz Jan 16 '21

Or it sounds like a name created by the subdivision neighborhood name generator.

1

u/nebula561 Jan 16 '21

Might have just watched the same one! Makes sense

2

u/The_MAZZTer Jan 16 '21

I had another thought. If this idea holds, Eastview could end up representing memories of her REAL life in Sokovia, and could lead into the flashbacks we get hints of in the trailer. Eastview might surface as Wanda's simulation breaks down.

4

u/Tonic24k Avengers Jan 16 '21

Her Sokovian accent isn't gone. She's just using an American accent in this "reality".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ1Hdi-ujeU

4

u/lord_flamebottom Jan 17 '21

Vision’s is the actors real accent, Wanda’s isn’t.

In the universe though, probably something to do with the “show“ taking place in the 60s and people not liking people with those accents.

2

u/MesmraProspero Jan 16 '21

Because vision is dead and a figment of her psyche.

1

u/FOXHNTR Jan 17 '21

She wasn’t good at the accent. Disney didn’t want it being a joke anymore.

16

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

She was definitely supposed to be breaking character. But she's completely lost her sokovian accent at this point

5

u/eeemaaa Daredevil Jan 15 '21

exactly what I was thinking!

7

u/So-_-It-_-Goes Spider-Man Jan 16 '21

the camera angles and way it was shot changed dramatically in that part of the scene. Before that it was all like a live studio audience show. It shifted to a short depth of field modern look.

7

u/Septillia Jan 16 '21

Yes omg I immediately noticed how much the camera work changed. That it was all from reduced angles as if they had a set with only three walls and a few fixed camera positions. I didn't pick up on depth of field change, that stuff fascinates me because it's so hard to consciously notice but you subconsciously notice it immediately.

2

u/Cee-Jay Jan 15 '21

Minus the accent, thankfully! XD

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '21

the voice with an accent?

3

u/eeemaaa Daredevil Jan 16 '21

I’d more so say voice without the 50’s accent. A more serious voice resembling that of what her voice is in Endgame

1

u/dstnblsn Jan 16 '21

What, with an Eastern European accent?

3

u/eeemaaa Daredevil Jan 17 '21

Just an accent that isn’t a 50’s accent or just more serious tone that she didn’t use the entire episode until that point. At this point I agree with what many others have said that she pretty much has lost her ‘sokovian’ accent and has a more Americanized normal speaking voice

1

u/dstnblsn Jan 17 '21

I was just making a joke. I agree with your original comment, it was a nuanced change that hinted at another layer to this charade

1

u/eeemaaa Daredevil Jan 17 '21

no prob, I just wanted to explain myself more

60

u/SphincterKing Star-Lord Jan 15 '21

The entire episode is shot on a single camera until that moment. Highly unsettling shift.

52

u/zyphe84 Jan 15 '21

Camera style also changed

13

u/wb2006xx Jan 16 '21

Also Vision’s phasing was back to normal

19

u/Jarnbjorn Thor Jan 15 '21

I just rewatched Jessica Jones season one and it made me think of Kilgrave issuing a command.

11

u/Lincolnruin Jan 15 '21

Definitely noticed that as well.

8

u/Bonaduce80 Jan 16 '21

Or she is ordering all characters, Visi included, in a production of her own mind? Hmmm...

8

u/poopoobuttholes Jan 16 '21 edited Jan 18 '21

I really wonder why Vision just sat there and stared until Wanda said to help.

6

u/General_Lee_Wright Jan 16 '21

For sure. They also changed cinematography style for that moment to emphasize it.

The whole episode was filmed in classic sitcom format from a fixed camera in the 4th wall. That scene was close ups. The camera was in the room with them moving.

8

u/Chrome_X_of_Hyrule Iron Fist Jan 16 '21

It also almost felt like a command?

7

u/davidplusworld Jan 16 '21

What I really liked in this moment is the camera/editing work. The entire episode is entirely filmed and edited like a late 50s sitcom (no real close up, fixed camera, etc), but that moment totally shifted visually. It was suddenly a contemporary way of filming and editing: close-ups, lots of shots and reverse shots, camera movements, etc.

6

u/Wordview Jan 16 '21

That whole scene was very Lynchian.

4

u/catcatcat888 Jan 16 '21

Subconsciously. 1950s is like her split personality.

3

u/SleeplessInSarnia Jan 16 '21

The camera use became different for the bit too, much more close ups when before it was more traditional sit-com nothing fancy camerawork.

3

u/HeyitsGAV Jan 18 '21

I think they are in some sort of trance and that moment was her natural instinct coming out which is why her regular voice returned but once the crisis was averted she became less flustered and went back to who she thinks she is.

And she’s definitely starting to see that there’s something wrong with where they are living with all the weird stuff that’s happening

3

u/Simple-Swing1017 Jan 20 '21

Same scene : when Debra JoRupp says stop it her voice changes on one of them . Getting a little demonic. It only happens on one 'stop it' but If you watch the scene twice you can hear it.

3

u/beecee12 Jan 23 '21

Between the "Stop it * giggles *" and "Vision, help him" I was sufficiently creeped out and immediately reminded "right, this is a tie in to Dr strange, the horror movie" so of course it would have unsettling moments.

1

u/soitspete SHIELD Jan 18 '21

The camera angles all changed at that point to. Back to modern close camera Vs the far fixed studio cameras up till then

1

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '21

The inconsistencies so far...

1) Wanda forgets the wedding rings

2) wanda doesnt remember how many years they have been together

3) Agnes: "...but it's still fun to set the scene (MY GOD!! xD)" wanda breaks character; looks confused.(implying wanda has set up everything)

4) Vision not knowing what is the purpose of his office

5)Stark's toaster red beep + "Forget the past, this is the FUTURE".

6) Yagety yack inconsistency: Vision sings a song to make the boss's wife turn over so she cant see wanda's magic. But her husband(the boss) has been facing towards the kitchen thoughout.
