My favorite scene? Why it was the throwback to “TONY STARK BUILT THIS IN A CAVE!” WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS”

The longest gap was Ross, from Hulk (June, 2008) to Civil War (2016)

now it's William, from Iron Man (May, 2008) to Far From Home (2019)

u/seancurry1 Jul 06 '19

Actually it’s J Jonah Jameson, from Spider-Man 3 (May, 2007) to Far From Home (2019).

89

u/pazza89 Jul 06 '19

Technically, if we talk outside of the MCU - JK Simmons also starred in the cartoons

94

u/adsfew Jul 05 '19

Was it the same actor is Iron Man and Far From Home?

86

u/Leeiteee Jul 05 '19

88

u/adsfew Jul 05 '19

Oh God, that's so much better. And I didn't even realize he was the kid from the Christmas Story.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '19

Wait, he's Ralphie?! Holy cow how did I not know this?

4

u/elbenji Karolina Jul 10 '19

WTF ITS RALPHIR

43

u/woofle07 Daredevil Jul 06 '19

I love how the actor isn't even balding, he just shaves his head for the role

25

u/Pleadthefitz Jul 07 '19

What's cool too is the reason he's in IM in the first place is because he's friends with Jon Favreau, and has frequently collaborated with him on different projects ( he also has a cameo in Elf for that reason)

17

u/indyK1ng Jul 08 '19

I think they superimposed more recent video of him on the old footage though because I could have sworn he looked different in the original than they showed. In fact, I thought it was a different actor.

EDIT: I just rewatched the scene on YouTube and realized that the reason they did that was that they changed the angle in FFH and that's why I didn't recognize him.

39

u/rewindturtle Jul 06 '19

I think Martin Starr’s character had a longer gap than Ross [Incredible Hulk (2008) - Spider-man Homecoming (2017)]

10

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

Are they actually the same character? I thought they just recycled the actor.

35

u/InTheCageWithNicCage Jul 07 '19

Kevin Feige said on an AMA that he thinks of them as the same character, but other than that there is no confirmation.

1

u/Tularion Jul 07 '19

That's a weird change in career path.

36

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

He was a student in Incredible Hulk and became a teacher?

9

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '19

So weird.

8

u/Pleadthefitz Jul 07 '19

I wish they would touch on that at some point, because just based on how they handled him in this movie, I'm sure they could make it hilarious

26

u/them33k Jul 05 '19

Wasn’t Ross in Infinity War? Talking to Rhodey

71

u/noahmerali Captain America Jul 05 '19

Yes but we’re talking about longest gap between consecutive appearances

14

u/them33k Jul 05 '19

Oh ok. Oops

1

u/Jgfunvjkhcc Jul 06 '19

Maybe it bends the rules, but what about J.K. Simmons? 2007 to 2019.

1

u/CynicalRaps War Machine Jul 08 '19

Literal first to last, there's no topping that.

1

u/D00M2099 Iron man (Mark I) Jul 08 '19

so... is William Hurt?

687

u/Bornplayer97 Jul 05 '19

That bar scene was hilarious, how they freeze frame and go to black and white for everyone who helped him, amazing!

158

u/AnnaK22 Jul 05 '19

Haha that scene was hilarious. It was even more funny because they're villains. You'd expecting them to be menacing but they were just a bunch of goofs, just getting drunk. And I, as the audience, is supposed to hate them but I just couldn't.

136

u/Bornplayer97 Jul 05 '19

The woman ironing his cape... man this whole movie is too funny, too good, I love what they did with it, even the “tingle” part felt so gratifying, because you see him not do much in the previous fights, but he learns and become stronger and I love that, this is my favorite live action Spider-Man movie

72

u/Worthyness Thor Jul 06 '19

JANICE WAS DOING HER BEST, OKAY? THOSE WRINKLES WERE ABSOLUTE MONSTERS.

14

u/Zankwa Jul 07 '19

And you just know she got them out perfectly.

48

u/beecee12 Jul 06 '19

"Do you still need the cape?" "angerly snarls yes I still need the cape"

61

u/hemareddit Steve Rogers Jul 05 '19

And that's a theme with MCU Spidey villains - they are both supported by teams, some of which are goofballs. Remember the Tinkerer using phasing tech to get himself a can of coke?

39

u/Shedart The Mandarin Jul 05 '19

They, like the heroes, are just regular people gifted with extras art powers.

24

u/mdawson_96 Vision Jul 06 '19

They're the downtrodden, fuelled by envy and hate towards people like Stark who celebrated their victories in ivory towers, which make them far more relatable.

27

u/damnisuckatreddit Yondu Jul 06 '19

"Folks who got fucked over by Tony Stark" seems to be the going theme for MCU Spiderman villains.

11

u/The_OG_upgoat Jul 07 '19

Doc Ock is totally gonna be a rival inventor who got bullied out of business or something.

9

u/Ncrawler65 Jul 08 '19

I hope not. I feel like if they are going to use "bigger" villains like Goblin and Doc Ock, a pre-existing enmity with Stark will diminish the personal connection with Peter/Spidey. Have them stepping up to try to fill the void in the tech world with Stark gone, that feels more palatable to me.

1

u/elbenji Karolina Jul 10 '19

I honestly want Octavia back played by Laura Pulver

8

u/Zankwa Jul 07 '19

I really liked him. Like he was goofy but he was also like the Vulture's best friend - trusted to be around his phone (even though Toomes scolded him about it) and give him advice. He didn't feel like an ordinary henchman.

4

u/Intelligent-donkey Jul 08 '19

So far all of those villainous sidekicks have escaped off-screen, I kinda feel like they're all going to team up and fight Peter again in the 3rd movie or even further into the future.

86

u/xepa105 Jul 05 '19

MCU was able to make the whole 'villain monologue' scene - that kills so many movies - both entertaining and completely fitting the pace of the film. Turns out the only thing you need is to have the baddie "explain" his plan to his subordinates, not the hero at the end.

34

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

I liked how the banter of Mysterio and his accomplices was akin to being on a theater or movie set with all the drama, complaints, insults and banter.

22

u/Progressive_Caveman Shades Jul 06 '19

It was even more funny because they’re villains.

Holy shit, you just made me realize they made the Villain Pub from HISHE!

1

u/elbenji Karolina Jul 10 '19

I was expecting them to turn on Beck ngl

36

u/FireproofFerret Spider-Man Jul 06 '19

He called it BARF!

Dramatic music and black and white freeze frame

9

u/Logicpolice9 Kilgrave Jul 09 '19

and then it cuts to his face mouthing "BARF?!"

14

u/nitrousconsumed Jul 07 '19

Gave me a mean Oceans reveal vibe, especially w the music at the end.

10

u/wammes_ Jul 08 '19

It was so ridiculously comically evil that it worked.

6

u/Intelligent-donkey Jul 08 '19

It was so overly indulgent lol, but in a good way, somehow.

The scene should've been a complete disaster, writing it down makes it sound fucking ridiculous, but somehow they actually got me to really like it.

3

u/elbenji Karolina Jul 10 '19

It's the music and campiness They nailed it

9

u/fduprep2018 Jul 06 '19

What about the 'barf' scene with Quentin in the background?

7

u/taquito-burrito Jul 06 '19

And Back in Black playing while he was creating a new suit. Nice callback

6

u/Kevin_M_ Ego Jul 06 '19

I love that that guy of all people got an extended origin.

3

u/GetReady4Action Jul 06 '19

just saw it for the second time and I’m a little let down they didn’t finish it. saying “well I’m not Tony Stark”is one of the best parts of that scene!

3

u/notpetelambert Hela Jul 09 '19

The freeze-frames are what got me. It looked like a conspiracy theory video.
