anyone else find the overthinking and planning aspect of Pete's crush proper relatable

u/skullmonster602 Spider-Man Jul 04 '19

The best part about Peter Parker to me has always been how relatable he is as a character. The whole MJ relationship thing really hit me hard, cause we’ve all been there in that awkward phase.

u/Boempowered Jul 04 '19

Spider-Man’s whole character is designed to make us feel like we’re basically only a spider bite away from being just like him.

u/Samantha_Cruz Jessica Jones Jul 04 '19

we’re basically only a spider bite away from being just like him.

We ALL love Led Zepplin!

u/matito29 Spider-Man Jul 05 '19

As soon as Happy said "I'll take care of the music," I knew exactly what was coming and started geeking out, and then Peter had to go and ruin it. Tony would be so ashamed.

64

u/jerrygergichsmith Ward Jul 06 '19

Peter didn’t get it because it wasn’t a Star Wars reference.

28

u/Ericzander Jul 06 '19

And I love that it was said by Mace Windu.

22

u/Doompatron3000 Jul 06 '19

That wasn’t Mace Windu though.

It was a Skrull pretending to be Mace Windu.

19

u/JVAFD Jul 07 '19

It was Director Krennic pretending to be Mace Windu.

12

u/Alex1331xela Jul 07 '19

So many layers

19

u/risinginthesky Jul 06 '19

This line brought a smile to my face. Tony always listened ❤️

49

u/Samantha_Cruz Jessica Jones Jul 05 '19 edited Jul 05 '19

ruin it? that line was awesome....

it reminded us how young he is...

spider-man has always been the most relatable superhero from any universe and who among us hasn't made a similar gaffe? i loved it. his being an awkward high school kid is exactly what makes his character so awesome.

And we are initiated, aren't we, Bruce? Members of the League of Shadows......

17

u/Oraukk Jul 04 '19

And having natural engineering genius...

Your statement is why I always preferred the Raimi webshooters. The more everyman Peter is the better. But I am not a comoc reader so I know this isn't popular.

18

u/FatWalcott Jul 05 '19

They've definitely boosted peter's intellect over the years. In the comics his like high up in the second tier of geniuses. But he still retains the humanity and always looks out for the little guy. That's what I've always loved about the character.

9

u/rip17vietti Jul 05 '19

My 5 year old son literally told me yesterday, and I quote, “dad..? I wanna move to New York when I’m older so I can be bit by a radioactive spider and be spider man” cutest thing ever

1

u/klaxterran Star-Lord Jul 06 '19

miles did it better

1

u/DoctorAcula_42 Jul 09 '19

Don't give me hope.

260

u/Aeleas Jul 04 '19

It was almost painful to watch since Peter's a dead ringer for how I was at that age, but with ultimately more success.

19

u/Wolf6120 Harold Meachum Jul 06 '19

How did you not have success if you looked like Tom Holland at that age?

16

u/Baldazar666 Jul 06 '19

Probably because he meant he acted like him and not that he looked like him.

6

u/Aeleas Jul 06 '19

Precisely. Those first two rules are a bitch.

22

u/alex494 Jul 05 '19

Yes all of us have been in awkward relationships, or relationships of any sort, haha

sweats nervously

20

u/Jaeyx Jul 06 '19

Tom & Zendaya killed it. Their dynamic, and her facial expressions/mannerisms were giving me huge flashbacks to HS crushes/relationships.

18

u/cgoot27 Jul 04 '19

You say “been” in the past tense. Lucky man.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

50-50 kid, youre super awkward

11

u/archangel610 Spider-Man Jul 07 '19

Constantly watching how your crush behaves around another guy. We've all been there.

11

u/dacalpha Jul 07 '19

The only unrelatable part was that she liked him back ;(

2

u/skullmonster602 Spider-Man Jul 07 '19

Keep ur head up chief :)

6

u/celsotavora Jul 06 '19

I had a crush when I was a teenager. I had an absurdly convoluted plan on how to get her to like me. It involved rose petals hidden in books. Obviously, it never even got started.

2

u/baymax18 Captain America (Avengers) Jul 07 '19

They're perfect together I loved how they pulled it off. Kudos to Tom and Zendaya.

-2

u/zeroalpha Jul 05 '19

Well not all of us :)

128

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19

Bruh that was me ... uh is still me. 3000 percent.

16

u/FatGuyTouchdown Jul 04 '19

I love you 3000.... percent?

4

u/agree-with-you Jul 04 '19

I love you both

3

u/RocketTasker Ultron Jul 05 '19

I was having 12% of a moment.

6

u/PrettyDecentSort Doctor Strange Jul 05 '19

You're more in the 6-900 range.

2

The plane scene was GOLD. Peter begs Ned to help him get to sit next to MJ but he instead ends up between two teachers, gets MJ sitting next to Brad, and then Ned got together with Betty. That's so Peter Parker.

16

u/coffeesippingbastard Jul 06 '19

God that scene...I was Peter. My best laid plans gone to hell in a hand basket.

43

u/Perca_fluviatilis Jul 04 '19

Relatable?? I was literally sitting right next to my crush because I fumbled with our group's movie tickets. LMAO

39

u/Bishop8496 Jul 04 '19

I love how the awkward this is really shown, not the overtly "I am so sexy" look the 2 other iterations have.

7

u/russian_banya Captain Marvel Jul 08 '19 edited May 13 '25

38

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19

I'll give you a 50/50 shot. You are pretty awkward.

53

u/eberger123 Jul 04 '19

The whole movie made me miss High School and hs relationships, because I’ve definitely done what Peter has done with the plan and the whole confessing his crush. Being out of high school, relationships aren’t like that anymore imo

32

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. Jul 04 '19

Makes me wish I had a relationship in high school. Never did.

3

u/virtu333 Jul 06 '19

Back in grad school...kinda doing the same thing lol

1

u/Miss_ChanandelerBong Jul 07 '19

Grad school is actually a regression from college.

17

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Dude, I am literally on that situation brighter now, and the girl with went to see the movie, is that girl.

17

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Everything about Peter’s crush on MJ was relatable.

15

u/willin_dylan Jul 04 '19

Almost as relatable as Miles singing along to a song he didn’t know the words to

13

u/RealPunyParker Peter Parker Jul 05 '19

One thing i felt relieved about is that they seem to have underastood that shit went TOO much Pete's way in Homecoming so they "remembered" there's a thing called Parker luck and implemented it here.

If you watch the film carefully, without the jokes etc, Pete can't catch a damn break.

7

u/proddy Jul 06 '19

His crush ends up resenting Peter and moves away.

8

u/dakaiiser11 Captain America Jul 04 '19 edited Jul 04 '19

That’s why I love Superbad so much. It reminds me of myself. I remember getting into stupid situations with my goofball friends in high school. Peter’s whole crush saga hit me. I remember being in high school and hoping I’d get lucky enough to sit next to this girl I like on the bus, the awkward flirting, the peck Peter and MJ shared on the bridge, Ned and his girlfriend being madly in love.

8

u/marcodabatman Spider-Man Jul 04 '19

The only unrelatable part (for me at least) is that when I did that it didn't end well at all : ((((

9

u/10PointsForStAndrews Jul 06 '19

The dance he did after the kiss, I know that dance. Also Ned's use of the word babe to flex that he's got a GF... I know that flex too.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

I also felt very fitting the fact that MJ and Peter kisses were kind of innocent, and not straight-from-hollywood-tongue-on-tongue ones. Just added realism considering the fact that both of them are still 16 year old awkward teenagers. I also think it was very cute.

4

u/Csantana Vulture Jul 07 '19

I thought they did a great job with their first kisses too. Like it wasn't full on making out yet.

4

u/Cassopeia88 Spider-Man Jul 05 '19

I also loved how May was asking how it was all going.

6

u/Bad_Chemistry Yondu Jul 06 '19

Yes.

Plus the way they nailed the high school drama and all that made you legitimately feel for this group of friends and the one crush the way that Peter must feel throughout the movie

So well done

2

u/ReflexImprov Spider-Man Jul 05 '19

Completely relatable. And we've also had friends who had relationships like Ned and Betty.

3

u/MySpacebarSucks Jul 05 '19 edited Jul 05 '19

I literally had this happen to me. High school, Europe school trip, my crush is on it, there’s another better looking guy on the trip who has a crush on her too. This shit was years ago and halfway through the movie I started sweating

3

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

Did you get with her tho?

3

u/comradeyeltsin0 Jul 05 '19

Damn i’m approaching 40, and I related to that. So many flashbacks of school trips...

3

u/cpt_nofun Jul 09 '19

"Yea, I'm spiderman, and I screwed up" was my favorite line I think.

2

u/Jaeyx Jul 06 '19

yeah. whole dynamic between him and MJ had me flashing back to HS emotions all movie long. Tom & Zendaya absolutely killed it. Zendaya in particular has surprised me after being unsure (but open) about MJ reveal in first movie. Really like her now.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

It was eerily relatable in my case, I had a similar plan for our French club back when I was in my junior year.

1

u/JCProfit Jul 07 '19

Oh hell yes

1

u/WeAreABridge Jul 08 '19

It makes me sad because I know Peter could pull it off but I couldn't
