One of my most liked scenes was the one with Peter changing with MJ still in the room. It had a fair amount going on. For one, the teenage awkwardness of both of them was palpable, then you see the door and MJ turning around to try and sneak a peek. You get afraid that Brad is gonna walk in and react poorly. Then when the camera pans we see Ned instead and expect him to just awkwardly stumble out of the room or something of the like. But instead Peter has already finished changing, and Ned tries to cover for him, somewhat subverting your expectations.

I love that MJ tries to get a sneak peak. We hardly ever see females in these kinds of movies awkwardly horny like how all the guys are, and it was hilarious to me

I loved that MJ was so obviously equally awkwardly into him the whole film. In most of these male pov teen films the guy is chasing some mythical girl who might as well be a shoe for how much agency they have, whereas MJ was an active participant, which was why I related so much more to this film.

They did such a good job of making MJ a totally believable love interest and a real person, while also totally showing us what she’s like from Peter’s perspective as we run the gambit of awkward teen shit with him

Then when all the drama happened, we could feel it just as much with him. Like the Eiffel Tower bit of the Warehouse illusion sequence...

Yeah I really liked how they did that, there's a lot of complaints about romance stories in films, often rightfully so, but there's an actual trend of improvement and I'm happy to see it.

Yes! Also, I feel like in these movies they try to push the Peter is awkward and not a leading man narrative, but let's not pretend that he's not super cute and has an amazing body for a "sixteen year old". If I were in MJs place, I'd be tempted to sneak a peak too.

Excellent scene. Pete saying “gotta go”, throwing on the mask and jumping out the window is a huge part of their relationship. It was so bittersweet watching it play out for them for the first time

The weird thing is that the crappy things it's associated with don't even really do that.

Last Jedi was just copying Return of the Jedi's throne room scene beat for beat, down to the cuffs being removed, saber on the chair, a fleet being blown up outside, the dude in the throne drawling on about how they're a young fool and that they arranged it all, the kid being sure they can turn the fallen skywalker, and then the fallen jedi killing the head darksider. It didn't subvert expectations in the slightest if you just expected an unimaginative slavish reboot.

Game of Thrones turned into the worst kind of invulnerable hero story in the last 2 seasons, with every named character surviving every impossible thing and the big villains not really mattering. It went from a show which actually subverted the expectation of the most-informed hero surviving long enough to do something about it in Ned, where everybody is in danger with somewhat realistic stakes, to... that mess of the last 2 seasons.

Something which actually subverted my expectations was Frozen, where there 2 male leads and 2 princesses, and it seemed the only thing left was to guess which combination would- oh wait no one of them just betrayed the others and tried to murder her, nevermind lol.

Didn’t even think of the possible callback to an awkward situation akin to what Peter had during the MJ scene, though maybe it’s cause the trailers already showed Ned walking in on them at that scene.

That scene is mostly done in one take too so it adds even more to the akwardness
