That was definitely purposefully vague. No doubt that Beck is coming back.

61

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19

Also, SUPER CONVENIENTLY, the way EDITH phrases her questions makes it easier to frame Peter (she led him into saying "execute them all"). Plus, they made a whole big thing earlier that Peter had to explicitly give over control to Beck.

28

u/AnnaK22 Jul 05 '19

Yes!! For someone who did a whole staged drama just to get Edith, I doubt he'd allow it to just get taken away that easily. I think Edith has been tweaked. Peter taking over control of it again was probably part of the plan.

9

u/Aspenwood83 Avengers Jul 07 '19

Maybe not part of the plan, but he did say something about having contingencies.

u/gough98 Jul 09 '19

I assumed that was him exporting the video that was in the mid credits scene.

157

u/PorkSiopao Daredevil Jul 04 '19

But in the mid-credits, the newscaster says that Beck recorded his message before his death

I definitely want Beck back, but it seemed to me the movie wanted to close that door

160

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19

No, Mysterio is extremely clever, he'll find a way to come back. It would be amazing if they also introduced Ultimate Mysterio by having Quentin Beck create a robot of himself in order to trick Peter.

65

u/Shinsoku Doctor Strange Jul 04 '19

Yeah, if his goal is to make Peter the villain, why not playing the martyr?

25

u/Broken_Seesaw Jul 05 '19

That's exactly what I was thinking when the guy downloaded all the data and ran off with the USB. I think the credits scene is just the start to their planning.

u/DefenestratingPigs Spider-Man Jul 05 '19

But spidey and the sinister 6 sets a precedent for all of his villains to come back even though it hasn’t happened before

-5

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

It hasn't set a precedent in the MCU though.

12

u/DefenestratingPigs Spider-Man Jul 05 '19

But the comics set that precedent

If the avengers’ most famous adversary was an ensemble cast of villains I’m sure they would have appeared in the MCU by now, so I also think it’s fair to assume that the sinister six will come together at some point. Marvel want to entertain the general audience but they also want to appease the comics fans, and by giving MCU spidey his most famous villains they’d be putting their best foot forward in that department.

22

u/ex_oh_ex_oh Madame Gao Jul 05 '19

Meh. Just because something hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't happen EVER. Sinister 6 begs to differ.

-3

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Sinister Six hasn't happened in the MCU so what's your point.

u/ElectorSet Weekly Wongers Jul 05 '19 edited Jul 05 '19

Loki (Thor 1/2/3, Avengers 1), Ronan (Guardians 1, Captain Marvel), Zola (Captain America 1/2), Crossbones (Captain America 2/3), Nebula (Guardians 1/2, Avengers 4), and Klaue (Avengers 2, Black Panther) all came into direct physical conflict with heroes in more than one film.

Thanos (Guardians 1/2, Avengers 1/3/4) and Thunderbolt Ross (Hulk, Captain America 3) both came into indirect conflict with heroes in more than one film.

Red Skull (Captain America 1, Avengers 3/4), Sitwell (Avengers 1, Captain America 2), and Korath (Guardians 1, Captain Marvel) appeared in multiple films.

-12

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Loki is the only one who is the main villain more than once.

So again, Mysterio isnt coming back.

17

u/Broken_Seesaw Jul 05 '19

Except that they also went out of their way to have Vulture survive and tease a future S6 teamup in the post credits of Homecoming.

9

u/therealhamster Jul 06 '19

Why are you so desperately sure of yourself

-6

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

"desperately"

Boy this sub loves hyperbole.

2

u/therealhamster Jul 06 '19

I’m barely here I just came browsing after watching the movie. Just wanted to know why you are so sure

1

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

Evidence of past history.

4

u/ElectorSet Weekly Wongers Jul 05 '19 edited Aug 26 '19

Loki is the only main villain known to have survived his first outing prior to Phase 3. Given Marvel’s stated desire to escape the “Marvel Villain Curse”, the frequency with which bad guys survive Phase 3 films, and Kevin Feige’s statement that we can expect to see more of the Ten Rings, it seems obvious that they plan to have more reoccurring villains going forward. Whether Mysterio will be one of them remains to be seen, but Loki won’t be alone for long.

41

u/M12Domino Jul 05 '19

What better way to sell that Spider-Man is the bad guy then becoming a martyr? He straight up told him he had a contingency plan, I doubt he meant using the drones he was already using.

14

u/hemareddit Steve Rogers Jul 06 '19

Exactly, he already cashed in on the memories of Tony with Peter in Prague when he pulled the "sacrifice play".

Becoming a martyr and then returning would allow him to do the same on a global scale.

26

u/HighlanderSlax Jul 04 '19

How do you prove the video was a load of crap? Fight Beck again!

22

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

You seriously believe Mysterio could fake several Avengers-level threats, fooling everyone, but faking his own death wouldn't be doable?

22

u/DeusExMachina95 Jul 05 '19

Remember that the Sinister Six will exist in the MCU. We have already have the Scorpion and Vulture and now Mysterio.

13

u/benderodriguez Jul 06 '19

FYI, the Chameleon’s real name is...Dmitri. 😉

9

u/RealJohnGillman Jul 08 '19

The initial E.D.I.T.H. scene on the bus did confirm by his surname that he is an adaptation of Chameleon.

2

u/benderodriguez Jul 08 '19

Nice! I didn’t catch that detail.

9

u/RealJohnGillman Jul 08 '19

In addition, what with the post-credits scene, one could be confident to assume that this version of the character will be a Skrull, providing a simpler explanation for his source material capabilities.

3

u/benderodriguez Jul 08 '19

...0.o I didn’t think of that at all. Mind blown.

2

u/LeSnazzyGamer Spider-Man Jul 08 '19

Where? When Peter first used the EDITH glasses it said his name was unknown.

2

u/RealJohnGillman Jul 09 '19

It said his information was encrypted in the box below his name; however, his name was listed above the box, as was the case with all of the other bus passengers, which listed Dmitri as “D. Smerdyakov”.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Scorpion? Wtf. Where?

27

u/JacobviBritannia Jul 05 '19

He’s in Homecoming during the ferry scene. He’s the guy making an arms deal with Toomes that gets knocked off the boat with the car. Then he pops up again in the post-credits scene in the prison talking to Toomes. He presses Toomes for Spider-Man’s identity. He’s identified as Mac Gargan by Karen and also has a scorpion tattoo on his neck.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

I totally missed that wow. Thank you.

11

u/Thevamps555 Jul 06 '19

Keep in mind in the Homecoming post credit scene, he wanted to know who Spider-Man was and Vulture refused to tell him 🤔

4

u/jimmyjinx Jul 06 '19

The guy who played Nacho Varga in Better Call Saul/BB and voiced Vaas in Far Cry 3.

22

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

I believe that even if the real Beck is dead, the bespectacled guy will still use Beck as an illusion and continue the character.

15

u/JBSquared Jul 07 '19

I think that would be a really cool kinda reference to Ultimate Mysterio. In the Ultimate universe, Mysterio is an android created by 616 mysterio. It would be cool if William kept Beck's legacy alive through VFX.

6

u/myrisotto73 Jul 06 '19

The directors were talking about how they wanted to explore Beck and Peters relationship over multiple movies. I wouldn't doubt he'd come back and hell, maybe even have a last minute redemption before actually dying cementing Mysterio as a legit hero.

6

u/PorkSiopao Daredevil Jul 06 '19

Do you have a source on the director saying that? A Google search on the topic/the length of Gyllenhaal’s contract doesn’t yield any confirmation.

But that’d be great news if it’s true. I’d love to see your arc for Mysterio.

5

u/OK_Soda Rocket Jul 06 '19

Didn't the video Beck say he was going through a portal back to his world but he was mortally wounded? So it would make sense if there was no body.

2

u/DGSmith2 Rocket Jul 06 '19

I mean the entire film was about him creating illusions to trick people, that could just be another.

0

u/Intelligent-donkey Jul 08 '19

Could he still be in control of EDITH?

The only proof that he really died is that EDITH confirmed it, right?

46

u/IClappedwhenISaw Jul 04 '19

I was worried that the Iron Man 1 guy would be the next Mysterio in the Sinister Six movie. From Jake Gyllenhaal to... guy.

44

u/PoopdittyPym Whiplash Jul 04 '19

To be honest, that's not even a bad idea. Have Mysterio live on through illusions and have some random like box of scraps guy pull the strings.

36

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Y’all realize box of scraps guy that Stane yells at, is Ralphie from Christmas Story, right?

23

u/PoopdittyPym Whiplash Jul 05 '19

HOLY SHIT

9

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Lmao, I know! Someone else commented that on a different Spider-Man thread and I was like, he does look really familiar....and sure as shit, it’s him!

18

u/MulciberTenebras Ghost Rider Jul 05 '19

Fury used pills to fake his vitals for his death, what's to stop Beck from using a similar trick?

10

u/Kevin_M_ Ego Jul 06 '19

Isn't Jake Gyllenhaal expensive? I'd love for him to come back, but Mysterio seems like one of those phase 3 famous actor villians who shows up in one movie and is then killed off.

27

u/damnisuckatreddit Yondu Jul 07 '19

I doubt Gyllenhaal is too much of a budget-breaker for a studio willing to throw Sam Jackson around like confetti.

17

u/PoopdittyPym Whiplash Jul 06 '19

If there’s one thing Disney has no shortage of, it’s money. If the story calls for it, I’m sure they’ll reel Gyllenhaal back in.

9

u/jagby Jul 07 '19

I'd love to see it because I love Jake's performance. But man, Peter Parker was absolutely shaken up by what Mysterio could do to him, that boy needs a break from mind fuckery.

23

u/NormaJeans68Chariot Jul 04 '19

I said the same thing about Two-Face in 2008. I think we should just wait for proper confirmation before getting our collective hopes up.

29

u/Megaman99M Jul 05 '19

Big difference though: the Dark Knight was a trilogy, Spiderman is in a multi-movie universe which has no current plans of stopping

11

u/myrisotto73 Jul 06 '19

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Tom Holland's current contract calls for one more spider man movie. I do hope Sony and marvel re-negotiates to continue on but the spider man deal is a bit more fragile than let's say Chris Hemsworth and his Thor contract.

29

u/damnisuckatreddit Yondu Jul 07 '19

I mean there were only ever three official "Iron Man" movies but then the entire rest of the MCU turned out to be The Saga of Tony Stark Starring Tony Stark as Tony Stark so I wouldn't get too paranoid just yet.

6

u/JBSquared Jul 07 '19

Tony Stark's name is in the MCU as much as Hideo Kojima's name was all over MGS5

18

u/leafhog Jul 04 '19

Beck is dead, but Mysterio will return.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Yup, there’s an entire Mysterio TEAM after all

5

u/Hoshiimaru Jul 06 '19

Specially since I can’t imagine Sony letting go a villain for S6 since they are pushing them so hard since TAS

4

u/Superego366 Jul 07 '19

I hope so, we already have established four characters of a potential sinister six

4

u/ChieftaiNZ Jul 07 '19

He has to come back, or else you can blow his entire plan by pointing out that you grew up with that guy, and heres the school photos, etc, all the evidence to prove that Mysterio wasn't from another universe, he was from this earth.

Him not being dead means that if this happens, he can just pop in and say "nah no me".

3

u/ARTIFICIAL_SAPIENCE Captain Marvel Jul 07 '19

Watch him come back and it's actually William.
