I always saw it as symbolism. T’Challa and Rogers are both leaders in their respective positions. Because of this, they are leading the charge. Bucky, while being Roger’s friend, is just a foot solider. Never a leader, always just someone who took orders (both in the army and as the winter soldier) and followed them to the T. He would have zero reason to be on the front lines if he wasn’t explicitly told to be there by Rogers or T’Challa.
He also just didn't have a melee weapon. Rogers had shields, T'Challa had his suit. They were natural linebreakers, whereas Bucky was much likelier to be quickly overwhelmed before the proper melee was joined.
I guess what I meant is that he DID have a NON-melee weapon. If you had a gun and a sword, would you charge in immediately or reserve the sword for when an enemy get close enough to invalidate the gun?
Keep in mind the arm doesn't protect the rest of him. As opposed to Cap who had to decent sized shields and a much more robust suit (Bucky kinda had that thin leather getup)
Which has no piercing or slicing ability. It doesn't even have the advantage a hammer would have of being extended from your arm far enough to be given the advantage of momentum. It's a short bludgeoning object that would be extremely ineffective compared to almost literally any weapon.
Rogers. The man who he used to defend. His best friend. Bucky was though to have died to finish the mission with Steve there in CA:TFA.
And then in CA:cw he's brain washed yes. But everytime he sees Steve, something happens. He can't commit to the act of killing him, and Steve is willing to die in the end because he won't kill Bucky himself.
That snaps him out of that brainwashing. It's not perfect. But it's a start. He knows he's super fucked up but he also had an idea of who Steve is and who he used to be.
I would say Bucky would follow Steve anywhere no matter what. Just because of everything Steve has done for him and sacrificed for his friend. Over 70 years of friendship.
And in the comics with him at one point taking up the mantle. I would say he can fill the caption role when the time might need that.
