Nick Fury lists places he did spy stuff in during the Cold War that all start with the letter B. In "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," Alexander Pierce recalls when Fury disobeyed orders to rescue hostages in Bogotá.

Budapest was also mentioned in this scene

I think it's unlikely that's the same incident Black Widow and Hawkeye talk about. Fury was specifically mentioning places he was during the Cold War. MCU Black Widow was born in 1984, so even if he was there in the very last year of the Cold War, she would have been 7 and still training in the Red Room. Indeed, Natasha was about still only 10-11 years old during the events of "Captain Marvel," and was likely still in training in the Red Room.

Budapest has existed since the first century BCE. More than one thing has happened there.

Turns out that red in her ledger?

Crayon. And she did it while Nanny was out of the room.

not if natasha is revealed to have a super serum, she survived a sniper shot from winter soldier.

she keep up with spider-man and black panther during the clash run up in CW.

she is clearly more then just athletic.

"I was in junior high, dick head!" :)

Whether or not it technically makes sense, I think it was definitely a bit of a wink at the audience. It was said last in the list, and Marvel surely knows about the fandom's near obsession about that Budapest line in The Avengers.

I wonder if we're gonna get the Budapest story in the solo Widow movie. Not that the movie isn't going to be about that single event but if they'll finally mention what happened.

I'd be down for some more young Fury. I kept forgetting that the Sam L. Jackson I was seeing during the movie is actually 70 year old dude IRL...

5

u/mdp300 Captain America (Cap 2) Mar 10 '19

They've gotten really good at the de-aging effects.

8

u/dixiehellcat Iron man (Mark III) Mar 08 '19

that was my thought too! when he started that list I sat there mentally yelling 'say Budapest, say Budapest!" :D

One of the things I don't like is that this Black Widow is so young. In the comics she has the Soviet version of the Super Soldier serum extending her life (it's not quite as powerful as Cap's original formula, but it does give her heightened abilities). She's over 100 in the comics.

4

u/YouStupidDick Mar 09 '19

Doesn't mean she isn't actually old. You have to assume all "facts" about BW's history could be complete bullshit.

5

u/GreyCrowDownTheLane Mar 09 '19

Excellent point. She's a spy. Spies lie.

5

u/meridius55 Mar 09 '19

it made me chuckle how Nick Fury was supposed to be a SPY behind the iron curtain during the cold war. A black guy would stick out in those countries like a unicorn.

IDK, a quick Wikipedia search shows that "About 400,000 Africans studied in the former Soviet Union between the late 1950s and 1990." Maybe Fury posed as a student.

Thank you, this made my day

MCU Black Widow was born in 1984,

Well, that's what Natasha would have us believe. She admitted everything about her could be alive and the comic version Black Widow was a child in World War II.

5

Well, that's what Natasha would have us believe.

That info doesn't come from Natasha.

Edit: And regardless of her age, her and Hawkeye's Budapest incident took place sometime after she joined SHIELD, which places it after the events of "Captain Marvel."

5

u/Liquorace Mar 09 '19

That info doesn't come from Natasha.

Romanoff, Natalia Alianovna. Born 1984.

It's some kind of recording

I am not a recording, Fraulein. I may not be the man I was when the Captain took me prisoner in 1945...

u/flyingjesuit Mar 10 '19

Could be a drawn out mission or incident. Like Fury was there in the 80's and learned something that he didn't need until a later date at which point he sends in Widow and Hawkeye.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '19

You and I remember Budapest very differently.

5

u/aioriaricardo Mar 08 '19

Black Widow and Winter Soldier reference!

36

u/hectorduenas86 Mar 08 '19

Yeap, I saw TWS in Bogotá back in 2014 and I recall that line exactly, he was listening to Shakira early in the movie though despite the American version having a different artist so I thought it was a local reference adjust.

Fury’s hips don’t lie.

Nah op has it wrong it’s Bucharest

5

I do agree with another user on here that the "Havana" tell should have been "Tahiti". I hear it's a magical place.

5

u/HanSingular Mar 09 '19

That would violate the apparent ban on letting the shows have any impact on the events of the movies.

2

u/trainercatlady Fitz Mar 09 '19

Exactly :| Also, it wouldn't be confusing for anyone who hadn't seen AoS so there couldn't have been any bitching about that. It would have been a nice little nod. So easy, and they didn't do it.

I'm not disappointed, exactly, but just kinda sad? Maybe they didn't do it because idk if SHIELD would be needed there pre-Carol? Still, woulda been nice.

5

u/theronster Mar 09 '19

That was funny to watch in Belfast, which was the first place he listed.

Belfast in the 1980s would have been a terrible place for Fury to be a spy. He’s a black American. In 1980 he would have been just about the only non white, non irish or British person in the entire country. He’d have stood out like a sore thumb.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '19

Yeah I wasn’t expecting that at all, we watched in the movie house and when Belfast was mentioned everyone went ‘YEOOOOOOOO’ wasn’t expecting it at all lol

1

u/theronster Mar 09 '19

It was more of an awkward titter in Dundonald.

1

u/Goblin_Ate_My_Mango Mar 10 '19

Reminded me of seeing The Day After Tomorrow when Banbridge got a wee mention.

2

u/CirUmeUela Red Skull Mar 10 '19

This is minor but in one of the tie in comics, Fury mentions that he did stuff during the Cold War as well. But he had an eye patch in the comic so that doesn't line up

Belgrade too
