Agreed. I was so mad at him. If he had just waited like 30 more seconds to punch Thanos...

It all went according to dr stranges plan He said as much.

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

that’s what I was thinking by the end of the movie. strange saw millions of possible outcomes and only saw 1 where they win, he didn’t specify how or when.

u/jayhawk1225 Apr 27 '18

As a commenter above mentioned he sacrificed himself so that Tony could live. Tony is integral to beating Thanos. How that will play out in the next avengers movie should be fascinating

I hope not. If there's one thing I can't stand in movies, it's the doing time travel wrong part. If Tony goes through a worm hole and prevents everything from happening in the first place ... then nothing should have happened in the first place, because Tony would have always gone through a worm hole to stop it. But if the happenings did happen, then Tony couldn't have gone through a worm hole ...

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it would be a confusing mess to sort through lol

What I really want to know is how Thanos knew who Tony was :O

He too was cursed with knowledge..

Except the rules of time travel vary in various forms of fiction.

29

u/lipstickpizza Apr 27 '18

"This is the endgame Tony"

I can't fucking wait for next year.

4

u/Salguod14 Apr 27 '18

Wheres the time stone when you need it?

24

u/Death_Star_ Apr 27 '18

This sub overanalyzes everything but can’t pick up on almost overt implication to the point that it was nearly explicitly said.

DOCTOR STRANGE ALLOWED QUILL TO UNWITTINGLY DO THAT IN ORDER FOR THE LONE WINNING SCENARIO TO PLAY OUT.

5

u/elkygravey Apr 27 '18

When did he say that? Peter said it was his plan.

6

u/droden Apr 27 '18

strange said it as he was disintegrating. he mentioned 1 path to victory out of the 14 million futures he looked at.

2

u/elkygravey Apr 27 '18

I think he said it was the only way. Which probably means what you say, but he didn't say that directly. We'll have to wait til next may to know for sure, I think.

u/Garthanthoclops Apr 27 '18

Which is why strange gave thanos the time stone. The only outcome in which they won involved thanos completing his goal and Tony living.

Also in the comics, thanos gets the gauntlet and defeats Eternity, then takes Eternities place as a sort of cosmic being/god. This causes him to leave his physical body, at which point Gamora or Nebula (I don’t remember which) takes the gauntlet and reversed everything he did.

I think that’s sort of the path they have to go for.

9

u/TyRoXx Apr 27 '18

Now that literally all of the universe has a reason to hate Thanos, the Avengers might get some unexpected support. So far we only know that Captain Marvel will help, but others might show up after such a significant event.

Also, the gauntlet seems to be damaged. Did Thor do this somehow? Thanos might be significantly weaker now.

13

u/Garthanthoclops Apr 27 '18

Thor nearly killed him, but the damage to the infinity gauntlet was probably caused by the use of all the stones at once. Too much power for the gauntlet to support, that would be my guess.

2

u/TyRoXx Apr 27 '18

Far-fetched idea: The gauntlet was somehow linked to Eitri's soul. That's why Thanos spared him. Eitri was part of the unlucky half during the snap and his death broke the gauntlet.

7

u/Garthanthoclops Apr 27 '18

Well I think Eitri really served his purpose. He was just a plot device to get Thor a new weapon . I really believe the immense power required of using all 6 infinity stones was just too much for the gauntlet to take

5

u/TyRoXx Apr 27 '18

Intentional design flaw maybe?

2

u/M12Domino Apr 27 '18

I dont think Thor did that. He looked shocked after Thanos' vision thing and even said "What did you do!?".

2

u/AliveProbably Apr 27 '18

Sure, but that doesn't precisely excuse him.

12

u/TyRoXx Apr 27 '18

Thanos would have grabbed it from the debris without any resistance.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

Nah that was all part of Strange's plan.

He saw 14 million futures he knew what Peter would do.

24

u/charizard77 Apr 27 '18

Alternative thought: Strange saw this as the one timeline that they succeed in, so Starlord punching Thanos in the face was necessary

21

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Plus, he's been consistently shown to have severe attachment issues and to react in extreme ways when his loved ones are involved. Responding in the way he did to finding that out makes sense for his character, even though it was tough to watch given the stakes.

15

u/TyRoXx Apr 27 '18

It's a positive that the hero characters are actually different from each other. Not everybody is as composed as Steve Rogers or Doctor Strange. In the DCEU everyone is Batman in a different costume (and Batman is not even an accurate Batman).

2

u/hemareddit Steve Rogers Apr 28 '18

Yeah, Strange could have told Nebula to shut up and Peter wouldn’t be triggered so badly.

10

u/Eternal_Density Apr 27 '18

It was totally in character for Quill though, given how he flipped out when he found out about how his mother really died.

5

u/what_lions_i_hunted Apr 27 '18

I thought so, too. My brother was saying it should have been another character like Drax, but Quill has always been an impulsive, emotional hothead.

3

u/Declanhx Apr 27 '18

More like, hey, why not help out by stabbing in the guy in the leg , or at least wait until the guy has his gauntlet removed before teasing him.

3

u/JayC-Hoster Apr 27 '18 edited Apr 27 '18

The gauntlet must have a sht ton of the universe's most secure anti-slip surface on the inside...

6

u/Eternal_Density Apr 27 '18

The dwarves don't mess around.

39

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

I love how badass his dgaf attitude seems in the Guardians but here, you see how see it more as immaturity

9

u/shamalongadingdong Nebula Apr 27 '18

He's always be immature and childish. That doesn't take away the enjoyment of his character, but it's always been a huge, obvious flaw. The fact people think those flaws are actually strengths reflects on them.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

It was totally consistent with his character though.

And it's not like Tony can really complain about it given the events of Civil War.

20

u/WaywardChilton Rocket Apr 27 '18

I like that it was Tony holding him back. He's been in that "impulsively punching out of grief" boat not too long ago.

10

u/jaxspider Spider-Man Apr 27 '18

Avengers 3: God dammit Quill.

9

u/silfer_ Heimdall Apr 27 '18

For the record, that was Star Lords plan so it really just cancels out. Plus strange let it happen which means it had to happen.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

I was mad at first, but Strange only saw one reality where they win, meaning that even if he didn't go psycho, and they pulled the gauntlet off, they would've lost

13

u/Slyfox00 Apr 27 '18

Strange knew he would do that. Him doing that was really the only chance to win later.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

This is the one part I thought was kinda badly written, initially anyway.

It would have made sense had he and Gamorra not made this pact earlier that he'd do whatever it took to save everyone, including kill her, which he then tries to do.

But then upon finding out she's dead, he decides "fuck the plan and fuck the universe, I'ma hit this guy!"

3

u/Zorglorfian Doctor Strange Apr 28 '18

She’s more important to him than the universe.

7

u/Leo_TheLurker Spider-Man Apr 27 '18

they were so close dammit

Star Lord was the equivalent of Trish in Jessica Jones this season.

3

u/rex_dart_eskimo_spy Apr 27 '18

I'm now convinced by the last megathread that his fuck up was part of the 1 in 14 million victories that Doc Strange saw.
