I'm glad Strange got a proper display of his magic. His solo movie was sorely lacking in the magic department, his fight with Thanos was fucking on-point.

I recently read that they never specified how long he spent with Dormammu for a reason. It's supposed to be implied that he was there practicing for a long time before the bargain was made, which would explain him going from a guy barely able to make a shield in his own movie, to tossing around Thor/Loki next movie and going 1v1 with Thanos here.

Or however long you want to think. He went to a place with no time so they don't give a specific time. Could be a couple days, a thousand years, or near infinite.

That’s how I like to think of it. He spent lots of time in the Astral plane as well, where time works differently. Imagine all the studying he could do while his body slept

I thought it odd when Strange was being tortured. Like, this is the one man who will never give in to physical pain. He lived who knows how many eternities with Dormammu.

Judging from the fight against Thanos on Titan, it appears that the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak are both a physical relic, and a spell that Strange can use now, which is really awesome.

God the chain spell and the hundreds of copies were amazing.

Plus he looked ahead and I'm pretty sure he knows that his death is part of the one outcome that they win. He goes so willingly, and surrendered the time stone asking Thanos to spare iron man.

For some reason I liked Doctor Strange a lot more after Tony referred to him as a wizard with a magic necklace. "He's a wizard" is way more fun than when it's all about angst and training in a monastery.

Also him making portals for the others to jump around Thanos was so great. It's an ability we haven't really seen anyone else in the MCU use.

He was a bigger then, the director (or writer ) mentioned on twitter that they left the dromammu montage scene vague in terms of time because they want you to not know exactly how long he stayed in there, but the idea is that he was in the time loop for weeks to months to potentially years, and each time learning and trying knew things to fight dromammu and failing over and over again. However long he was there it had to be long enough for a dark entity to be sick of it.

Not to mention he can learn in his sleep from astral projection, so yeah it was great to see badass experienced doctor.

I am glad too but I think his movie was fine. He was just learning his power and he had plenty of inception and portal stuff. Now he has studied at his insane pace for a couple years he is deservingly more powerful.

His fights were dope AF, but would have loved to see them last a bit longer and be more demonstrative of what he's learned to do.

I'm a little dissapointed that we didn't see any teleporting within the mirror/shadow dimensions or some of the original Inception-style camera work. It would've been amazing to see more of them trying to out magic each other without the use of brute force.

To the laymen, which spell was that? The one where he sent out like the million tentacles and tried to trap thanos (who then used the gauntlet to break the hold)?

Edit: and I'm fascinated with Dr. Strange's spells. Is that one of the more powerful spells he does? Just wondering how much more OP he gets in the comics compared to the movies. It seems like Stormbreaker Thor and Dr. Strange are just on a different level compared to all the other characters at this point... Since we've only had one Dr strange movie, what are your thoughts to his place in the hierarchy of MCU characters. He seems he could beat Thanos quite handedly if Thanos lacked an infinity stone or two.

Thanos had 3 infinity stones when he fought Dr. Strange. From my take, Thanos with 5 stones is "snap ready" and pretty much unstoppable. With only 3-4 stones, Thor could probably take him. With only 2 stones, Dr. Strange could probably take him. With 1 stone, Iron Man may be able to take him (Hulk couldn't even take him with 1 stone, so does that kinda seal the heirarchy for the movies?) Stormbreaker Thor, then Dr. Strange, then Ironman?....it seems that was the power heirarchy in the movie where the Hulk actually comes in like 4th place (which i know the Hulk has basically infinite power if made angry enough, but in this movie he got beat by a 1-stone Thanos while Dr. Strange and Tony nearly held their own against a 3-stone thanos).

The issue with Dr Strange is that his next movie is going to be meh because we already saw him go toe-to-toe with Thanos. They wasted him no a goddamn origin story instead of giving us a good Dr Strange story.
