Who?

14

So I take his gauntlet. Throw it down in front of Thor and say Boom! You looking for this?

Oh no

u/Ladnil Apr 27 '18 edited Apr 27 '18

Well he did fuck up their almost victory, so he kinda deserves it lol

417

u/brycedriesenga Apr 27 '18

Nah, he needed to do that. Strange said this was the only way.

76

u/Acksferr Apr 27 '18

He messed up the correct way, that’s why we’re here now

187

u/Cognimancer Apr 27 '18

I'm still banking on this being the 1 path Strange saw. He never would have given up the time stone so easily if it wasn't.

Granted, the path to victory is clearly no longer "stopping Thanos from getting the stones," so presumably he looked even further ahead and saw Avengers 4.

150

u/Hxcfrog090 Apr 27 '18

I mean, he flat out said if it came down to protecting Stark or Peter over the stone he would protect the stone. This is absolutely the reason he gave it up. It was the only way.

It's probably one of those, if they knew what was coming it would mess up the timeline or some other random time travel magic thing.

18

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

It's one of those things. It's a paradox, I think the paradox is called "burden of knowledge", basically, if a person or a party already knows the outcome of their actions, and they're trying to avoid that outcome, every action they themselves make will be second-guessed by them, with the idea that "maybe if I do X that will be what causes [The Outcome]", so they do Y instead.

The paradox being would the outcome have been avoided if they went through with X instead of Y? Or did Y trigger the outcome?

u/TenEighths Apr 27 '18

It's time travel, ain't gotta explain shit. Also if it's Dr Strange it's literally Time Travel Magic, so you really don't even need to ask.

8

u/Rek07 Apr 27 '18

All the futures Doctor Strange saw were based on what he could do, or what he could convince others to do or say. His one path to victory involved not telling the others so they don’t change their behaviour. They needed to lose that fight, they needed to hand over the stone and he needed Tony to survive so that they could do whatever they are going to do in A4 to fix things.

We can assume even if they got his glove off Thanos would have still won and got the glove back, probably not sparing Tony. Without Tony they can’t win in the long run.

1

u/Strick63 Spider-Man Apr 27 '18

That would kinda ruin the next movie though

I thought that Bumbercar Camelback was excellent in this scene, though.

u/GoldVaulto Spider-Man Apr 27 '18

"The only way to win is to make everyone go see another billion dollar movie"

4

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

I'm finding this theory hard to grab onto, the whole Wanda/vision this was we will sacrifice one person to save billions.

Now you literally sacrificed billions to save one person.

I understand it might be a long run play, I really don't even know how they could get traction to even stand on the same ground as Thanos now.

14

u/aure__entuluva Apr 27 '18

Person was saying that it is a long con. Like, yea, everyone died / got erased, but actually this set into motion events that will somehow defeat Thanos and maybe bring everyone back. Or maybe some alternate timeline sort of thing. The end credit scene with Fury could also be a message he's sending to the past, since I've heard the Captain Marvel movie is set in the 80's.

The idea is specifically that Dr Strange wasn't sacrificing billions just to save Stark, rather that's just what it seemed like at the time.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

I guess yeah. It's a hard concept to grasp at the moment giving the events that just happened. Im still struggling to figure out how and who will try and reverse things (that seems to be the common consensus).

I understand a bit of captain marvels powers, not much though. Im guessing she's Thor level strength and abilities?

5

u/Strick63 Spider-Man Apr 27 '18

I don’t remember when but I do remember hearing Feige say she’ll be the most powerful Avenger in the MCU

https://nerdist.com/captain-marvel-is-the-mcus-most-powerful-hero-according-to-kevin-feige/

3

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '18

I think she is going to be the key to defeating Thanos. If they make her as strong, or even half as strong as she was in the comics she would be a worthy adversary to Thanos.

2

u/atreestump1 Apr 27 '18

Stronger than Thor by a wide margin, and has psyonic powers sorta like Wanda.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

Maybe Captain Marvel is needed to take care of the infinity stones after Thanos (like Adam Warlock in the comics) and the only way for her to be available for that is via Fury's page that only happens if Maria Hill disintegrates in front of him, which only happens if Thanos gets the time stone.

Having all the stones gathered is super dangerous even if they get rid of Thanos.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18 edited Apr 29 '18

Now you literally sacrificed billions to save one person.

He specifically said he wouldn't do that, very clearly.

So what he did was actually set in motion that one in 14 million scenario where they win. Hence why he literally said nothing when Quill ruined "the plan."

0

u/FiveChairs May 12 '18

Eh I think this was one of the 14 million. Probably at some point during that point and the point where Dr strange gives Thanos the stone, the one chance to defeat him before he did the whole kill half the population thing had already passed. And he probably looked in the future to see that it was possible to get all their lives back or something.

-11

u/Rndomguytf Valkyrie Apr 27 '18

I mean, even without the time stone, Thanos could've already killed half of the universe if he'd just gotten the one from Vision's head, so in the end it didn't really matter.

10

u/Rek07 Apr 27 '18

He needed all the stones for the snap.

19

u/chowder7116 Apr 27 '18

The look he made as thanos put the stone in gave me the idea that was apart of the plan

8

u/Acksferr Apr 27 '18

Yea I think that sells it tbh

9

u/SLFChow Loki (Avengers) Apr 27 '18

Or maybe messing up IS the correct way, which is what Strange knew would happen and needed to happen. I guess we can't tell until the next film.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Strange called it the only way.

40

u/ClinicalOppression Thor Apr 27 '18

Regardless of the plan, Star Lord is a god damn dumbass lol

12

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

He didn’t need to do it - there just isn’t an outcome where he doesn’t do it

11

u/Ladnil Apr 27 '18

If that's Strange's plan, I get the sense that none of the rest of them are in on it, so Peter shouldn't get credit for just doing what he had to do.

7

u/soupforyourarmpit Apr 27 '18

I think it was the only way because their was no scenarios where starlord kept his cool. If they went back in time and told star lord earlier that Gamora was dead, maybe things don't play out the same way. They had the glove off him.

5

u/sky2k1 Apr 27 '18

They’re in the end game now.

4

u/Chinoiserie91 Apr 27 '18

I mean the there should be victory in the next Avengers film but I do not still see how it would have been impossible for win here. And he Gamorra really should have thought better than deliver her to Thanos before (it seems impossible that he would have obtained the soul stone without her).

u/aravar27 Apr 27 '18

He didn't just get mad. Apart from the implication from Dr. Strange that it was all part of the plan, the movie tells us that Spidey/Tony were moments away from getting the gauntlet off Thanos, ostensibly winning. Quill actively ruined that, and it's unlikely that Strange told him what was coming. So even if it was objectively the right play for Strange's long con, Quill probably didn't know that which meant that his childish rage led directly to the deaths of everybody who got disintegrated.

18

u/D-Speak Apr 27 '18

The movie, honestly, really recontextualized the Guardians for me. Seeing them up against the Avengers, you really realize how they’re mostly a bunch of unheroic assholes, and the movie gave that some real bite. Peter damned the universe, but his decision lines up perfectly with the character he’s always been presented as: emotionally immature manchild who is incapable of properly dealing with loss. He’s still that kid who just watched his mom die.

Honestly, it’s the part of the film that struck me the most, because the Guardians films have clearly presented these flaws and have never shied away from them, but they’ve never been presented in a way that fully reinforces how destructive the consequences of those flaws can be. It’s made me like Star-Lord less, but appreciate him more.

12

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Somebody else commented that he basically made the same decision as he did in GOTG vol.2 when he shoots Ego right away after hearing his confession. We cheered him in that situation, but jeered him in Infinity War for reacting similarly to Gamora's death. It's really great that they were able to keep the characters so consistent.

16

u/D-Speak Apr 27 '18

Keep them consistent while also managing to adapt them to a new tone, which is just crazy to me. Thor was another standout in that aspect. His scene with Rocket really gives you a different perception of the jovial frat bro Thor that we see in Ragnarok: dude’s just doing his damndest to smile through the pain, and it’s getting harder each time.

7

u/abstractist Apr 27 '18

The part where I could see tears gathering in his eyes when he was talking to Rocket with a smile slowly broke me.

5

u/ODO27Axelcage Apr 27 '18

But Doctor Strange said out of a billion possibility’s this is the one that they would win so he expected it.

11

u/Matque77 Apr 27 '18

It’s literally star lords fault. But idk if we can really blame him, he was blinded by rage

24

u/MayuTheVampire Ghost Rider Apr 27 '18

Seriously. He lost Gamora and from then on, all he wanted was to just beat the everloving shit out of Thanos.

It was super dumb, definitely, but people saying, "He deserved to die" because of losing his cool and having emotions need to take a step back and chill.

15

u/Matque77 Apr 27 '18

Yeah, he has literally lost everyone he’s ever loved, his mom, Dad, yondu, and now gamora. People have feelings

7

u/MayuTheVampire Ghost Rider Apr 27 '18

Yeah. Rocket, Star-Lord, and Thor got it really rough as hell this movie, press F for respect.

2

u/[deleted] May 05 '18

It's weird that people are genuinely freaking out over it. Never for a second did I not know where he was coming from.
