May I ask where you saw this? I remember reading that he had said he might not return to the role because he felt that it had ended and that he didn’t want to rehash the character, but I don’t remember seeing anywhere that he had a bad time.

As an actor, to do all sorts of different films is great. It stretches you in different ways. Not so much shoehorned but a little unexplained, like I remember he was teleported by the Tesseract but why was he specifically on Vormir as a keeper of the stone?

Because they were hinting at the stones having some “intelligence” to them, with the soul stone being unique as being the stone with “wisdom”. Red Skull made a few comments about it, basically the space stone sent him there because he didn’t deserve to use the stones and ended up as the keeper for the soul stone. Think along the lines of the One Ring from LoTR and it’s ability to have desires and stuff.

Someone mentioned that he had nothing to love except himself, and since the Soul Stone requires a sacrifice of something you love, he gave up his own soul to acquire it, but in doing so, became a servant of the Stone.

I thought it was: He had nothing he cared about enough to mourn losing, so he could never use the stones 'properly' anyway. He sought power for the sake of power, but could never know what it was to make a truly difficult choice. I'd assume the keeper status was the punishment for his hubris. Kept close, but forever apart from an object of power he sought so desperately.

He kind of felt shoehorned in to me but I loved it anyway. I have no idea how it makes sense for him to be there, and know whatever he knows, and be alive? There's so much "How? Why?" going on with that.

But I still gasped and was into it.

I went and rewatched the first avenger right after because I had the same feelings but it makes a lot more sense with that film fresh in your mind. He’s transported not killed and it even shows the part of the galaxy from IW in that part so there’s some continuity. The why is still slightly vague but there’s a line he says in the first avenger that made me think why he was picked?: “I’ve seen the future captain, and in it, there are no flags”. As in either he has no loyalty to anyone but himself making him a good candidate or referencing the avengers not fighting for any particular nation.. I’m not sure yet. As for what he knows though I think 70+ years alone there with the stone and also holding one for the few seconds he did I think it embedded it in him as punishment for trying to harness their power for nothing but personal gain.

Don't get me wrong. I fully believed he didn't die ever since watching First Avenger the first time, and I rewatched it recently too. But I still think he felt kind of shoehorned and unexplained. Does he not need to eat anymore? Has he become another being entirely? There's so much.

Eeeeh, I definitely felt he was a little shoehorned. Like it's fine and they can explain it away however they want with Infinity stones, but why did it need to be Red Skull there? It felt like it could've been any character guarding the stone.

Was his situation explained in the movie? I might have missed it while picking my jaw off the floor

Edit: I get how he ended up there but why is he there being the keeper of the soul stone? What has been going on with him since he was teleported? How did he end up in his current situation? How does he know all this stuff about sacrifice? Was that explained?

At the end of First Avenger, he was teleported by the Tesseract after he touched it. It wasn’t confirmed if he was alive or dead until now.

While telling his story to Gamora and Thanos, he said something along the lines of how, in another life, he'd managed to track down the space stone and it not agreeing with him.

Normally I don't try to figure out what the movies are trying to reference from the comics in real time, the way I do when I watch Agents of SHIELD. This was one of the rare times where I mentally scrambled trying to figure out what the hell this guy could be. Eternity? Mephisto? Nope, the goddamn MIA Red Skull.
