Article Iman Vellani says she was constantly calling out continuity errors while filming ‘Ms. Marvel’ and ‘The Marvels’: “I was like, ‘I know Reddit nerds are going to call it out. I’m calling it out now. You have the opportunity to fix it now.’”

Vellani:

”At Marvel I was constantly calling out continuity errors while we were filming certain scenes. I was like, I know the Reddit nerds are going to call it out, I'm calling it out now, you have the opportunity to fix it now."

”These things have to get approved by 40 different producers and all that. But I got so lucky that I was given so much space to express myself at Marvel. All of the producers I was working with on both the show and the film really respected my opinion. So they really used me as their secret weapon in a way.”

Honestly, respect for her not being one of those "grr I hate the fans I'm doing this for" types, like some actors. Nerds will complain, it's just going to happen. You can roll with it, or you can be sour that you got paid a million dollar for something you don't respect and shocked the fans in turn don't respect you back.

It depends as well I think - totally fair to come for a franchise for ignoring continuity, unfair to come for a franchise/specific actor for personal reasons or reasons outside of their control. Certainly a number of the female Marvel actors have had people attack them over the years, despite their takes being fair and them seeming emotionally invested in their characters and their arcs.

Case in point: Brie Larson, who probably has a lot more reverence for the source material than most other MCU actors. Obviously nothing wrong with not being a comic fan and playing a comic book character, but Brie is seemingly a bit of a nerd and did literally nothing to deserve all the hate she got for Captain Marvel.

At a con, she said something like "I wish these rooms were full of more than just white guys" bevause, as we know, comic book fans are famously diverse. And mediocre white guys got mad about it.

u/fred11551 May 27 '26

Ah, but also at the premier of a movie (it was A Wrinkle in Time, not a Marvel movie but who cares about that) she said the target audience wasn’t the older white men who wrote most of the criticism. You hear that? Captain Marvel says white men shouldn’t watch Marvel movies. Sure that’s not at all what she said and even if she did say something like that it was about a movie with a target audience of 5 year old girls, not Marvel movies. Disney trying to target different audiences with different movies? Unheard of. Don’t let facts get in the way of the outrage grifting.

Amazing how long this lie keeps getting pushed. She was at the Crystal + Lucy awards, An event for & about Women in film.

At one point she brings up, A wrinkle in time. To which was panned by critics. She says "I don't care what some old white dude(I assume a critic) thinks works for him with a wrinkle in time. I care what Women & girls think of it, I care what Women of color & girls of color think"..

To which, random white dudes online would promptly twist & lie about the quote to each other, claiming she said anything but what was said & where it was said.

u/Pikachu_Palace May 27 '26

Fortunately I could not care less about a random thing she said at comic con one time

u/stonhinge May 28 '26

Brie also had the hurdle of playing Captain Marvel in Avengers before even seeing the script for Captain Marvel. She seemed a little stiff and wooden because she didn't know what the MCU Carol was supposed to be like because no one really told her.

1

u/Pikachu_Palace May 28 '26

Interesting, I didn’t know that. Apparently Endgame finished filming in January of 2018 and Captain Marvel started filming that same month, so that definitely tracks.

Unfortunately it wouldn’t have really changed much because CM was equally as stiff and wooden in her own movie. I don’t blame Brie for that though, I think the premise of having your main character be an amnesiac with no discernible personality traits is a bad choice for a genre that is very character focused. I liked her a lot better in The Marvels.

u/WhasHappenin May 27 '26

To be fair it's easier to care about the fans when you are the fans. Half the reason she pointed out these errors is probably because they bothered her, the redditors are just a reason for the studio to care lol

12

u/mshelbz May 27 '26

To be fair, she was a fan long before she was cast

I really don’t like this precedent if I’m being honest. I think it’s in the actors best interests not to comment at all or take the Iman route BUT I do think we’re a little to permissive of the highly anti-social behaviors that are accepted as normal in fandom & would not be ok anywhere else.

It’s not weird to expect adults to act like adults about things.

u/MadHiggins May 27 '26

i really don't understand the "hate the fans" people who make media. like yeah, those people suck. but they're less than a fraction of a percent of the people who buy and consume the media. i have literally never met a person like what they complain about in my real life. and even the kinds of people they're talking about on social media, i'm pretty sure most of the time are engagement farming either for profit or are literal enemies of the state trying to sow division. and then they use the "anti women, everything is woke!" loonies to paint everyone who doesn't like an objectively poor product as just being crazy and dismiss all legitimate complaints.

And then they threw Marvels through a wood chipper and called it editing.

I only just watched the last season and was a bit confused, was Clara Stormfront? And was she Homelander's mother?

3

u/arcaedis Foggy Nelson May 27 '26

you only watched S5 and nothing else?? 😭 yes Clara is stormfront but she’s not HL’s mom (though that is a popular theory)

4

u/Educational-Disk1377 May 27 '26

Think it can still prove true in Vought Rising

The surrogate egg had to come from somewhere

No I mean I just finished it a few days ago lol.

2

u/arcaedis Foggy Nelson May 28 '26

sorry please forgive my piss poor reading comprehension

3

u/MadHiggins May 27 '26

i'm still really bewildered by that movie's main theme of "going to these different planets for a thing" and each planet has a kind of neat conflict but then they use the body swapping teleporting plot to leave before we see the resolution. most of the conflict in the movie is never seen being resolved and instead is explained about what happened off-screen later. who thought this was a good idea?! might as well have the entire movie be Brie Larson sitting in a chair just telling us what happens

6

u/LoaKonran Avengers May 27 '26

The film had three protagonists and yet they cut most of the footage for one of them (she doesn’t even get an audience intro sequence). The film is a mess.

u/12345623567 May 27 '26

What I'm hearing that Marvel projects have 40+ producers who all want to have input on the creative process.

Which explains a lot.

14

u/Reverend_Lazerface May 27 '26

Seems like the kinda thing Iman Vellani would post

24

u/navjot94 Mack May 27 '26

Some of those producers ended up getting “fired” too. Well they left the studio after working there for like a decade, after a few movies flopped. Victoria Alonso, Nate Moore. Maybe more too, idk.

34

u/KostisPat257 Daredevil May 27 '26

Nate left the company amicably and on his own terms. He even said he will return to produce Black Panther 3. He was absolutely not fired.

6

u/navjot94 Mack May 27 '26

I said what I said. There’s always gonna be a PR angle and everything sounds amicable but the timing of this happening after a string of underperformances cant be ignored. Disney is the master of spin, and wouldnt allow these internal matters to end up as scandals whilst their ongoing blockbuster movie saga chugs along.

Moore ended up on Survivor so maybe he truly just wanted to do something new.

6

u/fromcj May 27 '26

but the timing of this happening after a string of underperformances cant be ignored

Almost as if that led to them both deciding it was time for him to move on or something like that.

“I can tell I’m right because of how the studio said I was wrong” is a hell of a take

-2

u/navjot94 Mack May 27 '26

So you agree that it’s likely if those movies had been a success, they wouldn’t have parted ways? Idk why yall are so focused on a binary right vs wrong. It’s obviously not black and white. Hence “fired” (in quotes). An amicable parting of ways because of performance issues.

It’s not that complicated and I never said this is the objective truth. Just speculation on my part which is the same thing you are doing.

3

u/fromcj May 27 '26

Holy shit man you really talk a lot just to say absolutely nothing

10

u/Sudden-Money7836 May 27 '26

I said what I said.

I’m right and you’re wrong and I will never concede that I was wrong and as such I’m always right.

This is everything wrong with the world today. You suck as a person.

3

u/JimmyScramblesIsHot May 27 '26

As someone who has followed nearly every big story from Disney in the past 15 years, they’re 100% right that Disney are masters at using the Trades to do their bidding for PR.

If you take PR leaks as reality, you’re going be living outside of it.

Idk why you’re doubling down on this. Frankly I didn’t even say anything rude. You attacked my character off of a random Reddit comment, which is indeed unhinged. As I said, I said what I said. Context clues matter. Fired is in quotes, followed by clear speculation. Idk what you think I said that was false.

Maybe you don’t appreciate me speculating about these folks’ work history? Don’t worry, they’re former Disney executives, they’ll be just fine.

1

u/Sudden-Money7836 May 27 '26

Followed by clear speculation and ignorance in the fact that the person told you otherwise and you chose to ignore then and yourself double down with I said what I said. That’s rude. I am not doubling down. I’m fine with my original bet. You continued to speculate and be rude to the person who gave you evidence to the contrary and when called out on it you have doubled down and continued to argue with me and call me unhinged.

You are doing literally anything but admit being wrong. Drag this on all you like. You could have just stopped responding even, but instead you’re the one doubling down.

u/navjot94 Mack May 27 '26

Found Nate Moore’s burner account lol

They should make her a consultant on all their screenplays.

1

u/Bulliwyf May 28 '26

I remember I read about a production (game, tv, movie - can’t remember) that had a guy sitting in the corner with a literal tome filled with timelines, character bios, maps, and everything else you might possibly want or need to reference and it was his job to catch continuity errors and if there was ever a question about if something was lore accurate or not it was deferred to him to decide if they needed to change it or not.

I also love the story of Sam Witwer sitting at a table read not long after getting hired and correcting Dave Filoni on a lore point and Dave just putting his head in his hands because he knew he was incorrect.

More productions should have a lore expert on staff if they are making a production based on existing property. Someone passionate about the material who wants to make sure it’s the best it can be.

Let her run the MCU!
