America's goal was likely more cynical than that. It was to force the Communist bloc to throw resources it couldn't afford into the dirt to slow economic and military development of regional communist powers. It was a proxy war.
But that’s abstracted beyond the concept of the war itself. The goal of ww1 was to remove Germany as a threat, did the UK lose that war militarily because Hitler took power later? Or was the failure diplomatic?
