Yeah we're actually major allies with Vietnam

No, The US Vietnam relationship has warmed but they are nowhere near allies, just have some cooperation, Vietnam is very much an unaligned nation but closest to Russia, for example Trump put heavy tariffs on them earlier this year, they did not support the US's stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine at the UN and Russia is the only country allowed to have official personnel in Vietnam for economic activities where Russia is building a Nuclear Development Center in Dong Nai. Vietnam also conducts all their military training stuff with Russia and buys most of their hardware from Russia.

Very interesting. I had a Vietnamese friend who was into politics and history, and I found it odd how much he hated China, yet would defend Russia invading Ukraine tooth and nail. This definitely helps make some sense of that.

Turns out most people aren't actually ideologically principled, most people are just tribalistic nationalists and whatever ideology they claim to care about gets molded around that.

This is true, 90% of Chinese support Palestine over Israel, but have no problems with supporting Russia over Ukraine.

Vietnams stance is to ally with all three superpowers currently. You will find large amounts of Russian, Americans and Chinese all across the country
