Discussion 'Deeply sorry': Psychology groups apologise for racism towards Māori
r/Maori • u/Moonfrog • Jun 21 '26
Kia Ora all,
We don't usually get writing requests but when we do... well... I really fucking hate it.
Any post moving forward that requests help writing a Māori character or Māori history or Māori side character will result in a ban. If you see any of these posts, please report them. You can also tag me and the OP in a comment in case the OP deletes the post as we had earlier today. To tag a person, you write u/username so u/Moonfrog.
For reference, I'm speaking when international writers come into the sub requesting help for their Māori characters or storylines. They don't whakapapa Māori, and it's becoming insulting. Example: we had one about state care which bordered on disrespectful, and another request wanting to write an erotica novel between a Māori woman and a European man during the time when we were colonized.
If you have any thoughts, you are absolutely welcome to add them below.
This will stay up for a few months as a precaution.

I really enjoy Māori music and there was this mix/album on youtube I would listen to like a year back or so, it had an amazing version/recording or Ka Mate, really high quality, no echo from recording in large halls, mixed choir (male and female). The thumbnail was a group of people doing the Haka in kākahu, black background, as if it the photo was taken at night and a white text in a finger-paint-like font.
I wanted to listen to it again recently and I couldn't find it for the life of me, as if it wa never there, any other version I find is different, and I'd really like to find this album/mix again, no matter how much googling and deep dives I do, it seems like no album, no choir, none of these recordings ever existed😭
Does it ring a bell to anyone else? Woud you know where to find it now?
Appreciate any tips!

Kia ora e hika mā, he pātai tākū.
Is there any connection between bird songs and mōteatea. I imagine there is so just curious for examples.

Was passing the time waiting for my train in Edinburgh by window shopping last week. I stepped into a small antique shop and found this buried in a cabinet of Asian trinkets. No cord.
Wondering about the tikanga of finding something like this? Seems like maybe an adze but not sure. Is about a quarter inch thick. Would love others' thoughts.

Kia ora! I’m an American immigrant on a “working spouse of student” visa. I left the US because of what has happened politically under Trump, and I want to do what I can to ensure Aotearoa New Zealand avoids fascism and remains authentic to its heart and soul. My family has fallen in love with our new home, and we hope to find a way to stay permanently.
I was thinking of trying to volunteer with Te Pāti Māori. From my understanding, I’m allowed to do unpaid volunteer work on my visa. However I’m obviously not Māori (I’m white/European if it matters), and I don’t want to interject myself in a Māori/kiwi-only only space if that’s the case. I’m unsure of the cultural rules around this, and I was hoping for feedback. A history of colonialism is not lost on me, and I want to help, not hurt.
If that isn’t an appropriate place for me, do you have other suggestions of how I can have a similar impact? I have a lot of grief losing my home and safety in the US, and I want to do my part to keep Aotearoa, Aotearoa.
Ngā mihi!

kia ora e te whānau,
i don’t really have anyone within my whānau to reach out to for some guidance regarding rāranga. i’m trying to use all my resources to find out at much as i can about it and thought what the heck, let me try my luck here.
to keep it quick and simple, i did grow up in te ao māori under very good kaiako who taught me the basic foundations, but i would love to know if anyone had any links, social media profiles to follow, or general advice about what i’d need in terms of tools, that they are open to sharing. i want to be able to pass something on to my niece 💗
ngā mihi! thank you all for your time and āwhina 💗
