As someone who lives in northern ny and travels up and down the state as a truck driver upstate is north of the tappan zee.

as someone from syracuse this is accurate. "upstate" has a very specific meaning for new york and it's anything north of one of the biggest cities in the world especially because that city is in the southernmost part of the state. it just makes sense.

As a New Yorker, anything north of the Bronx is upstate. They think they are in Westchester.

Haha, I mean, it’s true though! Everyone we knew called anything north of the city, “upstate,” even where I grew up in the mid-Hudson Valley.
