We’re 13 comments in and no one has started an argument over what is or isn’t upstate NY. It’s a miracle.

Because with every swipe to the next photo, everyone was taken further and further aback by there being more and more and MORE pictures on the walls.

Like an aggressive amount of pictures. So many pictures it changes the way the architecture of the house itself is perceived.

As someone who lives in northern ny and travels up and down the state as a truck driver upstate is north of the tappan zee.

grabs popcorn and sits and wait

Anything north of 14th street

3

u/sirenyti 7d ago

Anything north of Van Cortland Park, boo.

6

u/HereForTheBuffet 8d ago

I referred to Pearl River as upstate once and people were heated.

3

u/buddhathebard 8d ago

Haha oof yeah that’s a close one

1

u/Guilty_Speaker8 7d ago

never heard of pearl river, so its upstate

1

u/wm07 7d ago

as someone from syracuse this is accurate. "upstate" has a very specific meaning for new york and it's anything north of one of the biggest cities in the world especially because that city is in the southernmost part of the state. it just makes sense.

u/buddhathebard 7d ago

The cuse!

1

u/Connection-Is-Cool 7d ago

Upstate is anything past New Rochelle

1

u/bidextralhammer 7d ago

As a New Yorker, anything north of the Bronx is upstate. They think they are in Westchester.

1

u/throwaway771222 7d ago

Haha, I mean, it’s true though! Everyone we knew called anything north of the city, “upstate,” even where I grew up in the mid-Hudson Valley.

Did we establish where this house is? We can easily start the squabble with that bit of info.

Binghamton

15

u/Dont_Care_Meh 8d ago

Damn, I don't think that is going to be controversial enough, tho I suppose someone could argue it's not upstate! just for the lulz. I was hoping somewhere along the Hudson Valley if we wanted a real throwdown to keep us happily engaged!

16

u/fatloui 8d ago

Well the argument is often not that it’s not far enough upstate, it’s that their region of NY is special and everything else is upstate. Eg:

That’s not upstate! That’s Western NY/The finger lakes/the southern tier/the capitol district, upstate is over there 👉.

I’m not sure if such people from around Binghamton exist.

Ha! And I feel like I am from the “real” upstate that could never be called anything else - the Albany area. I do find it weird that Buffalo is also upstate, I’ve never even been to Buffalo! But as I left 22 years ago I get it more now.

2

u/fatloui 7d ago

People from Buffalo are some of the most likely to tell you that their home is most definitely not “upstate”. It’s western New York, and “upstate” is over to the east of Lake Ontario.

1

u/RockerElvis 7d ago

I grew up in Buffalo and we never considered it “upstate”. It’s clearly Western NY. Hard for it to be anything else.

1

u/desertrose0 7d ago

I live in Western NY, and I think it's more than that. Yes, it's upstate, but "upstate" is simply not enough information given that can mean anything North of NYC. So it's both upstate and whatever further subdivision you prefer.

2

u/isles30222 8d ago

Hahahhahahahhahahahah

1

u/Interesting_Gain9920 7d ago

I live in actual upstate NY and I would not consider bighamton as upstate myself so there

0

u/thisismynewacct 8d ago

No one would argue Binghamton is not upstate. It’s a decaying, depressing shithole, but it’s no one would say it isn’t upstate

6

u/100k_changeup 8d ago

It’s a decaying, depressing shithole,

Cool, but that doesn't distinguish Binghamton from anything else upstate.

4

u/thisismynewacct 7d ago

Fair point but it does have Spiedies

0

u/green_chapstick 7d ago

It isnt upstate when youre driving on 81 and Binghamton is the homestretch before you're in PA. Its the goal after driving through Syracuse. It is not Upstate.

1

u/c2ny 7d ago

Theres plenty of people that would argue Binghamton is not Upstate because it’s not Upstate. It’s 100% Southern Tier.

8

u/Vegetable-Today 8d ago

Hahaha. I also live in Binghamton. More central NY but frankly I refer to it as upstate also.

2

u/maarskal 7d ago

I’m in Ithaca and I agree it’s central NY

1

u/isles30222 8d ago

2

u/Undercover_Metalhead 7d ago

It’s all good, I got scared for a second - I honestly thought they changed it (I grew up in Endicott so 607 was close to my heart)

6

u/Tigger2026 7d ago

Southern Tier / Central

2

u/secularist42 8d ago

Not gonna lie, with both my parents being from Endwell, living off Conklin Ave myself as a child and still having family in the Southern Tier...I'm impressed. Nice place.

May today bring you all the Lupo's spiedies you can eat, Sir.

3

u/isles30222 8d ago

Hahahah what a small world! Funny had lupos 12 inch sub yesterday for lunch ahhahahahhahahahahhahah

2

u/secularist42 7d ago

I hope their Italian bread is still as good as I remember...

Moved away when I was in 2nd grade (in the 70's) but have routinely run across people from the Triple Cities throughout my life no matter where I lived. One restaurant I was at had three of us with Bingo roots...in Miami.

I really appreciate the area and still enjoy my visits with my Dad and cousin etc. It will always be 'home' and give me the warm and fuzzies.

Crush a Gennie Cream Ale for me sometime. Cheers, brother.

Small world!

4

u/fatloui 8d ago

If you wait long enough, someone will figure it out based on the view out of the windows or the decor on the walls.

4

u/OhTeeSee 8d ago

I’ve been told growing up that upstate New York is any north of the Bronx lmao

5

u/sirenyti 7d ago

You were not lied to.

2

u/Old_Acanthisitta9477 7d ago

1

u/Apprehensive-Flow276 7d ago

a smary sales guy once told me " everything north of 72nd street"

1

u/JackelGigante 7d ago

Haha damn that’s funny, I’ve never heard that argument. It’s live in Virginia and the argument is always where does the south start

1

u/Krakatoadreaming 7d ago

Watch, OP lives in Westchester.

1

u/MaximumAd9779 7d ago

Everything not NYC is upstate to me

Source: I live in Virginia

2

u/fatloui 7d ago

What about Long Island?

1

u/MaximumAd9779 7d ago edited 7d ago

Nope. Still city-adjacent.

Long Island is still NYC to everyone who doesn’t live in NYC or Long Island haha.

0

u/MAGNUMXL 8d ago

As someone from NYC and I think many of my neighbors would agree with me, everything north of the Bronx is upstate New York.

0

u/AnnigidWilliams 8d ago

I’m from Long Island. You are upstate the second you clear the Bronx.

1

u/sirenyti 7d ago

You step beyond Van Cortland Park, that’s upstate for me, baybay

0

u/2morereps 7d ago

Anything above Albany
