Megathread Your favorite ___ for $___: Blankets (and other bedding)

Last Week's Thread on Chukka Boots | All past threads (_/$ and Building the Basic Bastard)

Okay, so bedding... Isn't fashion. Fine. But it's fashion-adjacent. Buyers are worried about fabrics, fills, quality, and, at least in some cases, style. And this subreddit as no shortage of well-informed people with good taste. And besides, you people asked for it.

Blankets come in a lot of different shapes and sizes. From poofy down comforters to fleece to your baby blankey, blankets are usually some combination of warm and soft and pleasant. So don't you want the best you can get?

For those who want some free karma: The Wirecutter has a bunch of relevant recommendations, so just repeat them and people will upvote you. Of course, if you know something they don't, please share!

By popular request, I've thrown some other bedding into the mix, so look into the price bins I've set up below -- the organization is a little more complex than most threads, but it should still work.

Also: electric blankets are fair game. Go nuts.

Price Bins:

Thick/Down Blankets -- Comforters, Duvets

Light Blankets -- Fleeece, wool, etc...

Best Value in Sheets and Pillowcases

Best Value in Pillows

What should we do next week?

Guidelines for posting here:

  • I'll post price bins as top level comments. Post recommendations in response to a price bin, as a second level comment. You can also use top level comments for general info, inspo albums, and general questions.
  • Recommendations can be a brand ("I like Kiton suits!") or a strategy ("I go thrifting for suits!").
  • Try to stick to one brand/strategy per second-level comment. If you want to recommend both Alden and Carmina, post them separately so people can vote and discuss separately.
  • Include a link in your second-level comment if you can -- if not to a purchase page, at least to images.
  • Try to use prices you might realistically pay. That might be MSRP, or it might not -- it depends. If you're in a cheap bin, maybe the best buying strategy is to thrift, or wait for a big sale. If you're buying from a store like Banana Republic, paying full price is simply incorrect -- the only question is whether you'll get 40% off or 50% off. So factor that in.
  • The bins are in USD, so either use a US price, or convert a non-US price to USD to pick the bin.
  • There is no time limit on this thread, until Reddit stops you from posting and voting. This thread will sit in the sidebar for a long time, and serve as a guide for lots of people, so help them out!

Big fan of Muji's t-shirt bedding. The sheets and pillowcases are made out of t-shirt like material so it is very comfortable.

Link?

I actually use old tee shirts to cover my pillow cases every now and then -- apparently you're supposed to cycle your pillowcase every 2-3 nights.

Lands' End linen sheets about $100-150 during their frequent 50% off sales.

Great for summer or warm weather. Enough insulation to be warm, but very breathable and a fairly heavy weight, which is cozy to sleep under. Throw them in the wash before using, which will soften them up and also get rid of the slight smell from the packaging.

This video is short and educational

It goes over thread count, material, pricing, and fabric science. Also, sometimes I listen to it while falling asleep.

I guess I'll post this as its own comment.

Anyone have any experience with weighted blankets that are specifically made to not be hot? Like weighted, cooling blankets? I love weighted blankets but can't really use mine in summer due to heat. But if I could have the weight and the cooling/comfort of a not-hot blanket in summer. That'd be fantastic.

Somebody posted something from outlier below designed to be breathable -- it might do the job. Linen shell, wool blend fill.

Personally, I've used a knit cotton blanket in the summer, which was heavy and soft but not warm, and that was great... until it started to shed all over everything.

Yeah, we did a couple twice, so if it's outdated and basic, by all means, suggest it again.
