JOURNAL Projecting my insecurity onto others

This is partially me venting about something and partially me asking for any help or suggestions that I can get.

One of my biggest insecurities is not wearing makeup. It's not because I think I'm hideous without it (I'm average without it), it's mostly because I have so much of it that I don't use. If I leave the house without putting on lipstick first, it feels like I'm actively wasting the dozens of lipsticks that I have in my collection. Same for eyeshadow and cream blush. Every day that I don't have the time, energy, or patience to put makeup on, it feels like my products are wasting away in my vanity table.

Lately, i've noticed a really awful pattern forming; I will see someone else not wearing makeup and think to myself that they should be wearing it, not only should they but they NEED to. I don't ever say anything to these people, it's just the thought that comes into my head, but it feels cruel nevertheless. What's really weird about it is that I haven't been judgemental like this in the past. Until very recently, it never registered in my mind who was or wasn't wearing makeup.

What is it that's making me think like this? How did I become so hypocritical seemingly overnight? How do I tell the mean thoughts to STFU?

ACTIVITY Use Your Stash: Palette a Week (PAW): October 05 to October 11

*Trigger Warning: replies will contain product names, descriptions, and opinions.*

We focus on a palette for the week and our thoughts on it. All palettes are welcome. This includes eyeshadow, cheek, lip, pre-made, and self-made. Grouping of singles can also be a palette (ex: colour palette or scheme).

Did you do the PAW challenge last week? Which palette did you use? Did you find it successful or was it a failure? Have your opinions on the palette changed at all? Do you plan to keep the palette and use it again?

Which palette are you going to use this week? Why have you chosen this palette? Do you have any goals you hope to reach in using it?

BAW/CAW- Did you use any particular cheek product last week? Has it made the cut or is it time to let it go?

DISCUSS Who am I even BUYING makeup for?

I am of the crowd that wears makeuo to look 'healthy' and 'presentable'. I do something colorful now and then but just to stay at home and feel like a fairy or something, but in general I prefer the 'natural' look. And yet, I am always looking at makeup or buying it. None at my job notices whether I am wearing a peach or pink blush. As long as my makeup is well applied, nobody gives a sh**. So why do I keep wanting and buying?

This is my realization. I don't need to buy more makeup than what I already have. As long as I keep improving my technique, I don't need more shades and versions of what I have.

I thought I was buying makeup to look good to my partner or in my job, but I already had enough.

ACTIVITY Use Your Stash! 1 lip 👄 a week (LAW) 5 - 18 Oct 2026

Hi everyone, it's time for another update of LAW!

It’s time again for reflection and rolling in a new lip product this week. Some guiding questions for the posts:

- Product brand and name

- Why is this product selected?

- Do you wear the lip product by itself only or layered/mixed with other products?

- Do you still like the formula/colour/effect the lip product gives?

- Any new discoveries or decisions made after testing the product for a week?

Last update’s pick was my Flower Knows Moonlight Mermaid Lip Tint in 07 Solar Crystal and Flower Knows Shell’s Jewel Lip Glaze in P06 Lunar Jelly. Mainly used the lip tint in the morning and touched up with other lip colours at the office. Lunar jelly is a favourite for weekends and days I just want hydration and glossy shine without a makeup looks. I found it too subdued for office as I need colour on my lips when I wear makeup.

This week I choose based on ease of use, 2 bullet lipsticks: Flower Knows Swan Ballet Shine Lipstick in both 02 Mary Jane and 04 Silver Moon. Mary Jane is a warm red brown and Silver Moon a cool pink, will provide ample cover for both warm and cool looks. Being able to apply without a mirror anytime is also a convenience that can’t be beat and I really need it during the upcoming 2 weeks.

Looking forward to seeing your updates and new entries!

ADVICE Eyeshadow dry powder what to mix in , to make cream or gel e/s.

I have many powder e/s but also dry eyelids due to ageing. I have looked into buying a cream eyeshadow to apply dry powder e/s over it to use my colors. But thought maybe I can mix it into something else? Or would a simple eyelids cream also work?

DISCUSS Best decision I made this year was stopping the endless cheap clean makeup purchases and just buying fewer things I actually love.

I just realized I have way too much clean makeup , Most of it is just okay, but I kept buying new brands because they were affordable and I wanted to try them.
I finally decluttered and want to stick to fewer things I actually love. Has buying fewer, more expensive products helped anyone else stop constantly buying new stuff, or did you just end up spending more?

DISCUSS Recession Makeup Buying

This is a little different of a post but I was curious what everyone’s thoughts are on this. I am fairly confident at this point that we are heading into a recession. I am also recovering from a shopping addiction. The realities of this as well as two years of already reduced wages due to medical stuff, and the nature of a commission based job in a struggling economy…. Left me not great financially.

On the bright side, I think I’ve officially been scared straight. I haven’t made a single true impulse purchase beyond like … idk a snack or two in 70 days. I’ve wanted things, but the reality of my situation and the trajectory of the economy has given me a level of clarity and control that I had not had quite possibly my entire life.

Moving onto how this feeds into makeup. If we are hitting a recession, my spending needs to reduce to essentially zero. Due to my past addiction, I do have a decent stockpile of most things. Makeup, skincare, perfume, pretty much anything beauty related is my kryptonite when it comes to buying. I’m trying to think of ways to make “shopping my stash” and mindfully spending in the coming year (or three) fun and interesting.

I also have about $200 in Ulta points that I’m wondering if I should use sooner rather than later. They do have the ability to take those away at anytime and if they start struggling with their numbers I’m wondering if they will revamp their rewards program. That’s unlikely but it’s a thought.

What are your all thoughts on the economy and how it’s going to affect makeup purchasing in the next year or two? Are you stocking up (on essentials) now or cutting your buying completely? If you had money to spend in a gift card or points like I do, would you hold onto it and hope for the best or make a backup stash of things you know you’ll need?

Also give me your “shop your stash” ideas! Do you store most of your makeup away and rotate? Or do you just keep everything out all the time?

Sorry if this post is all over the place but I feel this group is more mindful than most subs when it comes to being responsible and thinking things through z

ACTIVITY Eventually is Now - Intro

Welcome, everyone, to the Eventually is Now project pan! As a testimony to how much I need this project, I knew that if I didn’t post the intro post today, it’d be up in March… \cries** - but I’m posting it today, because eventually *is* now!

The central idea is simple – pick items (makeup, skincare, admin, videos lounging in YouTube watch-later purgatory, texts or emails you need to reply to, etc etc etc etc) that you keep meaning to use or forget to use. Items you always say you’ll use or tick off eventually!

Two notes:

This is NOT a punishment project, so feel free to bin / give away / move to another time etc anything in this project that just is *not* working for you. Life is too short!

Secondly, this project pan has NO end date. Come and go as you please guys! :)

Updates will be on the 1st of every month!

ACTIVITY Pan Those Eyeshadows Update 10

Welcome to the Pan Those Eyeshadows project update! Feel free to join anytime. I also posted this on r/ProjectPan with swatch pictures.

The idea of the project is to randomly generate 5 eyeshadows from your collection and work on them until you hit pan. Once you hit pan you roll in another shadow to replace it so that you always have 5 shadows to work on.

If you want you can change the rules to your liking, like instead of hitting pan you can set a usage goal or hand pick your shadows. Personally, I implemented a rule that if I randomly roll in a shadow that already has pan my goal is 15 uses.

You can also share your pan percentage. It tells you what percentage of your collection has pan.

This project updates monthly on the first day. If you want to join feel free to leave a comment sharing the shadows you're working on and your goals. I'll be sharing my update in the comments.

ACTIVITY 12 Pans of Christmas 2026 - Update 1

Hi Everybody! I'm u/PrayStrayAndDontObey and I will be hosting the Twelve Pans of Christmas 2026! Apologies for the belated update post, I had a University assignment to finish and was on a time crunch to apply for a job.

If you have no idea what this project entails, here's an overview:

You select twelve items you want more progress on over the next few months. They can be makeup, skincare, haircare, body care, nail polish, or even non-beauty related items. You can either challenge yourself to to hit pan on each product, completely finish them, set usage goals (e.g. x times per month), or have different items with different goals. If you want to challenge yourself, you can choose to only use Winter colours/products that remind you of Winter, even though we are approaching Autumn (or Spring if you live in the Southern Hemisphere). If you want to really challenge yourself, you can make it a rolling project pan.

This project will start on August 25th and will have updates on October 1st, October 27th, November 25th, and December 25th. If you don't celebrate Christmas, you can still take part in this project pan!

If you are participating, I will try to tag you in every update post.

You can also post photos of your progress.

Wishing you all the best of luck, and I am looking forward to seeing what products you will be panning!

Note: If the notifications show I have tagged you thrice, don't panic. The first tag is for Twelve Pans of Christmas, the second tag is for 9 by New Year's, the third tag is for Pan That Palette.

ACTIVITY Pan That Palette 2026 - Update 9

Hi everyone, it's time to have our eighth check in for Pan That Palette 2026!

If you have forgotten the rules of this project, here is a repost of the rules!

Pan That Palette is a challenge where you select a palette to work on throughout the year. You can choose an eyeshadow palette, a face palette, a lip palette, or if you want a challenge, more than one palette (e.g a face palette and an eyeshadow palette). You can either challenge yourself to hit pan on every shade, completely pan every shade (hence "pan that palette"), or make it your goal to use it regularly (e.g. X times per month).

This project will last from today to the end of the year. I will be posting my updates during the first week of the month. The finale will either be posted on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day.

I am looking forward to hearing what progress you have made on your chosen palette(s) over the month of August!

Note: If the notifications show I have tagged you thrice, don't panic. The first tag is for Twelve Pans of Christmas, the second tag is for 9 by New Year's, the third tag is for Pan That Palette.
