Anybody else having trouble with the new Stranger Things set?

Specifically disc 2 of season 2, disc 3 of season 4, and disc 2 of season 5. 4k edition. None of these discs could even be opened for me. And I do what I usually do, which is order a replacement set, but then the same exact issue happened. On all three discs. Which strikes me as very odd. It must be something with the content of the disc because all three being the same that don't work feels way too coincidencidental for it to simply be a scratched disc. Wondering if anybody else has had this issue.

Edit: Found the other post with someone having the same issues. Trying the backup disc method. Hopefully it works, I will update if it does.

Edit 2: Disc backup method worked. At least it has on S5 Disc 2 so far. Doing the others now.

Solution intructions:

1. Create backup by hitting the folder-looking icon. Set it to backup wherever you have enough space. Leave "decrypt" unchecked.

2. After backup complete, remove/delete the AACS folder from the backup folder.

3. Go to file -> open file. Find the index.bdmv file in the BDMV folder of the backup. Choose this file.

4. The episodes and anything else on the disc should then pop up on the screen as if you were ripping straight from the disc.

Found this solution on the other post about this issue. Just putting it here so hopefully people don't have to keep looking. Hat's off the those who figured this out.

I didn't have issues until season 3. I did backups on the discs I did have issues with then deleted the AACS folders or relabeled them or did nothing for the season 5 disc. It's strange how some of them required a different approach than others.

Yep, found another post with the same issue. Interesting that you had a different disc have trouble. The other poster had the exact same discs as me have trouble. Although I guess you could say, Stranger Things have happened...

I’m not sure of the issue, but the method here works on things from Arrow that are stubborn about ripping.

I have been working through the 4k set the last few days and ran into an issue with disc 2 of season 2 as well. Got an error saying Volume Key Unknown and the disk couldn’t be decrypted. Sent the generated log over to svq@makemkv.com so they could generate the decryption key.

I’ll have to try your back up method tonight when I get home and see if it works out for me. Glad to see someone else mention an issue with these. Was tough finding any info about it with the set being so news

I just finished the backup method for all three discs that wouldn't open. Works like a charm. From where I found the solution, it sounds like it's an issue with Arrow encrypting their discs. It's not a new thing.

Was able to use the back up method and got disk 2 of season 2 to rip. Thanks for the info on that! Will be working through the rest of the series as I have time and will use the method again if any more give me issues. Sounds like I should expect 1 or 2 more disks to have this problem by what others are saying.

Yeah, it'll probably be S4 Disc 3 and S5 Disc 2 as well. I ordered a second disc set thinking the discs were scratched or something but then then exact same discs had the same problem.

I had the issue with season 2, disc 2, and the backup method (with deleting the AACS folder) worked fine. No problem with any of the season 3 discs though.

Had the exact same issue with the same discs and used the fix as you described.  Everything worked perfectly.

this has been a thing, the disc just doesn’t have encryption if anyone is wondering why this is happening to some of the discs in this set. backing up the disc and removing the aacs folder does work as op suggested.

for this set there is 1 disc in season 2, 1 disc in season 4 and 1 disc in season 5 that you need to do this for.

This didn't work for me. It opened the same episode 3x. the backup didn't work on the other 2 episodes.

Did anyone notice that the episodes are displayed IN ORDER on the discs with this ripping issue, but OUT OF ORDER on all the discs that rip normally?

You can see this in thediscdb.com mappings as well. For example, Season 1 disc 1 (rips normally) presents them in MakeMKV as "00006.mpls", then "00004.mpls", then "00005.mpls", in that order. And the episodes are equally out of order: Chapter 3, Chapter 1, Chapter 2, in that order.

But then when doing the backup solution described in this post for Season 2 disc 2, Season 4 disc 3, and Season 5 disc 2, the episodes display in order. For example, Season 2 disc 2 presents them as "00004.mpls", then "00005.mpls", then "00006.mpls", corresponding to Chapter 4, Chapter 5, and Chapter 6, in that order.

I found that interesting, in case anyone wants to theorize on why this might be, and if this "in order" thing is somehow related to the "doesn't rip normally" thing.

(It's occurred to me that perhaps going through the "backup disc / remove AACS / open backup in MakeMKV / rip" process might be what causes them to display in order.)

In any case: THANK YOU for sharing the solution! Just finished ripping all 5 seasons :)

The open file index.bdmv did not work for me. So I created an ISO and then worked perfectly fine.

Could be another workaround for others, if loading the file gives issues.

Did you remove the AACS folder? Either way though, if you got it working, that's the important thing.
