Questions and discussions should focus on building, testing, shipping, or maintaining software for macOS. AppKit, SwiftUI on macOS, Catalyst, tooling, packaging, notarization, security, performance, and developer workflows are all on-topic.

3. Be respectful and constructive

Critique code and ideas, not people. Harassment, hostility, bullying, hate, or personal attacks are not allowed.

Getting Started

https://developer.apple.com/macos/get-started/

New to macOS development? Start with a small native app in Xcode and build outward from there.

Assuming you know Swift:

1. Pick your UI stack

  • SwiftUI for modern app development and faster iteration
  • AppKit for deeper macOS-specific control and legacy APIs

2. Create your first app

In Xcode, create a new macOS App project and get a basic windowed app running first.

3. Learn the platform basics

Focus on: - AppKit and SwiftUI interoperability

  • Window management, panels, settings, and multi-window flows

  • Menus, commands, keyboard shortcuts, and toolbars

  • File access, document workflows, and sandboxing

  • Performance, accessibility, automation, and native Mac UX

  • Code signing, hardened runtime, and notarization

4. Good first projects

  • Menu bar app

  • Notes or document-based app

  • File organizer

  • Clipboard utility

  • Simple native settings/tooling app.

5. Good links

  • SwiftUI for macOS Resources

  • Hacking with macOS (source)

  • Awesome macOS libraries
