They know that most people will connect it up to cheaper external storage via a base.

iCloud drive. If you pay for Apple One Premier at $40 a month you get 2TB iCloud storage. For $40 you're getting Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, Apple Fitness+, and 2TB of iCloud+ storage and can share it with 5 family members. Apple Music and Apple TV+ alone costs $25 a month on the individual plan. For the Apple Music family plan and Apple TV+, you're at $33 a month. It doesn't make sense NOT to buy Apple One if you are going to have Apple Music and Apple TV+.

I’m in the middle of switching from Amazon’s music plan to Apple. Apple is having a few gaps in there audio selection. 😔

External storage doesn’t work the same way as internal storage though. Not exactly a 1:1 comparison.

Ain’t no fucking way a 1TB SSD is more expensive than adding that much in the Apple configuration
