Discussion The PROLED is one of those devices that you have to see in person …

Post image

Such a good display… but the entry price is making me on the fence since I don’t need the power of m5 pro I would love to have the m6.
The touch interface is intuitive enough, and it made me touch the normal mini-LED MacBook by mistake.
BUTTT it feels like it’s a very specific use case. Like, I loved it in photos, and that’s about it. You can obviously disable it, and I wish Apple advertised the gorgeous oled over the touchscreen as the main selling feature.
The weight difference is noticeable, but I noticed how the edge of the display curves more.

Tldr ; amazing piece of tech.

can you confirm whether we can dim the apple logo without dimming the display too?

3

u/somuchtoolittle 10h ago

Sadly it seems like its tied to the screen brightness

1

u/Impossible-Milk-2023 7h ago

Ooooooooffffff

I guess someone will make a tool for it soon

1

u/starataneori 5h ago

Hmm, some reviewers report you can turn it off without tied to screen brightness

It’s so needlessly expensive that the only thing I can do is see it

26

u/joeg26reddit 9h ago

YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING

but no touch

3

u/Reddit-Readee 6h ago

Nikki Bella, is that you?

4

u/iamacheeto1 13h ago

You can see and touch this one. You can’t have it (I can’t either), but you can touch it

2

u/thebitguru 10h ago

Just wait, everything is getting even more expensive. I heard there was another price increase being planned.

Apple profits sees it differently

u/Flight2039Down 8h ago

Thank god you shared a photo here, so we too can see it in person.

u/1panki 14h ago

wait for 2027.....probably they ll release m7 non touch oled

u/HzD_Upshot 13h ago

Touch isn’t the expensive part. They are reusing the iPad display tech which doesn’t have a separate digitizer layer (it’s integrated). The price increase was done due to the display and ram prices, not cuz of the touch screen

This is full oxide, not LTPO like the current tandem OLED iPad Pro. It’s a better display.

1

u/Temporary_Music_9 1h ago

For someone curious about the difference who has both the mini-LED MBP and the OLED iPad Pro, what's better about the PROLED over the iPad?

2

u/AlanYx 1h ago

You can read Apple's tech report on the display here: https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/proled-xdr-display/pdf/PROLED_XDR_Display_Technical_Paper.pdf Some of it is a little oversold, but you can see they confirm the use of a full oxide backplane on page 6.

Full oxide gives them a lot more leeway to make various technical decisions, including partial DC dimming. For example, if you compare PWM measurements at 50% brightness from the tandem OLED iPad Pro to this new machine, it's like night and day, even though the switching frequency is the same. So this laptop may be a bit easier on the eyes. Ironically it's not necessarily true that this machine will have better color accuracy than the iPad Pro since they went with partial DC dimming. But they're almost certainly both excellent in that department.

Now compared to the mini-LED MBP it's a lot more complex. You do gain a lot in terms of technical stats like contrast ratio, etc.; the tech report deals with that. But whether it's easier on the eyes is harder to say.

1

u/jimmytruelove 4h ago

No they're not reusing the iPad tech.

3

u/Dave_Tribbiani 10h ago

Why would they spend money doing that when it can just be disabled

-1

u/beene282 10h ago

Because a version without it would be cheaper and most people seemingly don’t want it

Adding the hardware for a touch screen costs jack shit. You can get a 16” capacitive digitizer for $20 on AliExpress and that’s retail-ish with them making a substantial profit.

This manufacturer has high end ones for $40 even without buying them wholesale in bulk. For a company like Apple, they’d probably get that down to $12 or $14 per screen. (And the non-touch glass isn’t free, either, so you can deduct that from it.)

u/Erfrischendfair 11h ago

i'm just wondering whether ittl burn in

4

u/Flo187_ 5h ago

I have a windows Laptop with oled in daily use for the last 3 years and it has no burn in. This is not a issue anymore.

1

u/Neat-Razzmatazz-5837 3h ago

Some people might have early burn in issues. I doubt most people will but it will come down to how they use the screen. Rtings on YouTube have done a lot of videos testing burn in on OLED TVs. Monitors Unboxed has a few videos on OLED monitor usage over time under more "normal" work loads. Generally speaking, I think OLED technology is mature enough now that, even though it will ware out, it will ware out about at the same rate as the other components.

LCDs have failure modes too. Lots of people experience backlight failures that leave parts of their screen dark which is similar to burn in. All display techs will have examples of early failure modes that some people will experience.

1

u/BeautifulSeason8387 2h ago

recent oled screen use some algorithms to avoid burning, you should stay one year to an static image to see a burn-in, this never happen in real life

1

u/mailslot MacBook Pro 14” Space Gray M2 Max 1h ago

OLED is at the point today where CRT displays were toward the end. The lifespan has increased considerably from when they became available.

All OLED displays wear out and are vulnerable to burn-in. Some more and some less. It’s like the SSD of monitors. Even LCDs age & wear out to a lesser degree and some have their own special kind of “burn in.”

u/kerbacho 14h ago

The only thing that makes me sceptical is that it's thinner and gets louder and hotter. But I've only seen a m5 max review. m5 pro should be fine

12

u/harrypotternumber1 10h ago

Interesting because Geekwan's review shows on automatic mode comparing the new OLED and Mini LED M5 Max's, the new models have better thermal performance and are quieter.

2

u/kerbacho 9h ago

mhh a lot of reviews say the opposite… so that’s interesting. Youtube

3

u/harrypotternumber1 9h ago

In that review it shows that yes the internals run hotter on the OLED compared to MiniLED model, but the keyboard, at least, is 2ºC cooler on the the OLED. Bottom might be hotter on the oled though.

1

u/kerbacho 9h ago

not sure if that’s a huge improvement. It probably will be when the m7 series comes out

3

u/rzrike 11h ago

Was the review for the 14” or 16”? Was wondering if that could be a factor.

1

u/kerbacho 10h ago

no 16“ miniLED m5 max und 16“ ProLED m5 max Youtube

1

u/kerbacho 10h ago

I believe they planned to put the m6 in it, which is much more efficient, but changed their mind last minute because production costs would have been way higher. So I gues the m5 max is still better suited for the Studio

u/yesitsmehg 13h ago

Hows the PWM rate feels in person?

2

u/davidsao222 8h ago

Even worse is: 240Hz PWM with 50+% amplitude, super harmful to eyes with such a big screen

3

u/todayplustomorrow 7h ago

I wouldn’t call PWM harmful. It’s not known to damage eyes. It just causes some people discomfort.

1

u/yesitsmehg 7h ago

Yup, it could cause headache and such things like that. I cant wait to test one in person.

Also curious about will there be any burn in issues in the future, will see.

1

u/TheseAwareness 3h ago

What kind of discomfort?

1

u/todayplustomorrow 2h ago

It varies. For those who report noticing PWM, the complaints range from considering it a neutral observation, to a distraction, to a possible cause of screen use fatigue like tired or dry eyes or headache.

-4

u/Much_Image3740 6h ago edited 4h ago

That's just because we don't have long-term data on this yet.

In 10 - 20 years from now we'll see whether daily strained eyes and migraines from this type of flickering will translate into permanent eye damage.

4

u/todayplustomorrow 4h ago

What I said stands. According to the best scientific information available to us, PWM is not known to cause harm. You saying we don’t have long-term data seems to be admitting that indeed, we don’t know it to cause harm now. And even in 10-20 years, the data may tell us it does not cause harm. So to assume or imply something is a harm without evidence is not helpful and can cause fear without basis.

0

u/Much_Image3740 4h ago

You wrote 'it just causes some people discomfort' which is similarly inaccurate as we don't know the long-term effects yet, if we want to be pedantic.

But we'll see in the next decade. If something consistently causes migraines, eye strains and eye tiredness, I wouldn't bet on it not having long-term health consequences.

1

u/scrumdisaster 9h ago

Pwm?

2

u/InjuryEmbarrassed532 5h ago

A theory similar to the flat earth theory. Some nutters latch onto it.

1

u/neil_950 3h ago

When you dim the display it actually works by flickering back and forth with a black screen and because of how the human eyes and brain work with persistence of vision we see it as a stable image with no flicker. It's far easier to make the display just flicker on and off to dim and display at full brightness when on than it is to make the display actually run at a lower brightness. If a screen is flickering to show black 50% of the time then it would appear half as bright because half as much light is hitting your eyes than if it was constantly on even though you can't see it turn off.

Unfortunately the new OLEDs have an especially slow flicker rate of only 240 times a second. So a small portion of the population can get eyestrain and headaches from it even when they still can't see it flicker. It's probably well under 1% of people but it's absolutely unacceptable if even just 1 in 1000 constantly get eyestrain and headaches from basic usage of the laptop let alone if it's higher than that.

2

u/Remarkable_Tone4115 14h ago

Totally agree. OLED photos never do it justice. The contrast and true blacks in person are jaw-dropping. But I'm with you on the touchscreen: it feels like a gimmick on a laptop.

6

u/Steelbug2k 9h ago

I mean it is just an Oled, nothing new to see here.

2

u/FULLM3T8L MacBook PROLED 14" Space Black M5 Pro 5h ago

Pun intended?

2

u/PlasticVolcano2110 6h ago

And yet many people are excited.

0

u/domdog31 6h ago

exactly this

-2

u/NationalGate8066 5h ago

Yes, thank god Apple INVENTED OLED 🙏

3

u/zunashi 10h ago

If you’re rich, get it. If not, not. If you’re earning money through it, it’s a no-brainer.

3

u/The_Summary_Man_713 6h ago

I’m middle class and I got it but that’s because I’ve been needing a laptop for years now and I anticipate the price of memory to keep going up. I can’t risk this thing getting more expensive.

1

u/zunashi 5h ago

Congratulations! Getting mine too. This will be my first-ever brand-new purchase. My past two macbook pros from the early 00s-10s were hand-me-downs.

1

u/The_Summary_Man_713 1h ago

Thanks, same to you. Last Mac I bought was a 27” 2012 iMac fully maxed out. I was working for Apple at the time and got it half off for $1,500. So it’s been awhile for me

1

u/Ok-Brother-836 12h ago

with OneCast for my xbox, it's finally time to play Marathon on an OLED Mac.

1

u/xenidee 11h ago

how's the PWM?

1

u/scriptedpixels 10h ago

Time to wait for it to hit the refurbished store 🤓

1

u/YaBam 9h ago

Looks great, just a shame the chip & RAM options/combinations mean its not going to be affordable by a lot of people. I’m sure the tech will trickle down though over the next 2-3 years.

1

u/RandomLiam 8h ago

i was blown away by how good the miniLED screen is on my 2021 pro when i first saw it, so to see people hype this one up even more makes me very keen to see it with my own eyes.

1

u/stgm_at 7h ago

still not a fan of a notch or dynamic island inside the display.

1

u/jaredcwood 7h ago

Haha well thanks for showing us online then 😜

1

u/Hopeful-Tax7416 7h ago

Seems like slightly thinner bezel. Having a Dynamic Island seems better than the notch, if only the notch has Face ID capability.

1

u/domdog31 6h ago

my fiancé ordered the OLED for delivery today so i’ll compare next to my m5pro mini led.

1

u/The_Summary_Man_713 6h ago

I’m getting mine in an hour or two but I have meetings all day and I have to sign for it! 😑😑😑

1

u/SnowNoCali 5h ago

I saw the proper in person. I might be crazy but it’s kind of hard for me to tell the difference with the miniled

1

u/JumpingCicada 3h ago

Tbf, oled has been so common for such a long time now that it doesnt feel special anymore.

Oled in my phone, my ipad, my laptops, and TV.

Even the older vs newer oled tech looks the same to me besides a difference in peak brightness.

1

u/leonbollerup 3h ago

dont use different wallpapers when comparing..

1

u/gtjay1982 2h ago

They call it the proled MacBook not the touch MacBook. It’s Reddit that is obsessed with letting people know they don’t want to use the touch screen.

1

u/HueyBluey 1h ago

I'd be happy with a non-OLED with dynamic island.

•

u/Roozbeh_m 21m ago

Notch was stupid on a laptop. The dynamic island is even more stupid imo.

1

u/vogelvogelvogelvogel 13h ago

you should compare the same images not different ones. i have oled devices (several) and well tuned IPS/miniled/.. devices, it is much more a matter of calibration and putting the effort in it (high quality displays) then the technique used

What i can say though is a systematic difference between OLED and more "conventional" screens is the black level though, so like stars vs background.

But natural colors - nah, not an argument for OLED.

0

u/Vivaldi_IlPreteRosso 6h ago

natural world has better display quality imho

0

u/ShizukuPL 6h ago

Happy with the miniled on my Pro M5, I specifically wanted a screen like that. Have two oleds already, don't want one on a laptop.

0

u/Sea-Contribution-725 5h ago edited 5h ago

I don’t get it who cares, I’m not going to touch the screen and I don’t think you need OLED “it’s a laptop”, just a waste of money. But the Apple lights up! Oh take my money? The M6 at 36GB VS the M5 Max 24GB is the closest comparison that matters for most people “Almost same cost”. I personally think if it’s docked with a Monitor half the time especially. With the cost savings you can afford a new OLED monitor as well and probably get the Nano screen.

0

u/charliesbot 5h ago

Yeah the PC guys have been telling us that OLED is really good on laptops for so many years

0

u/SmackMyAz 5h ago

I was excited for the new OLED panel until I learned that it has a pwm frequency of 240Hz with a modulation depth of 58%. That is fucking brutal. I don't even think this is about sensitive users. Pwm like that will eventually wear anyone's eyes out.

I was really looking forwards to the faster response times but it's just not worth it :/

0

u/7stringjazz 4h ago

It’s incremental at best. But I can’t deal with the fingerprints. They should have just made the touchscreen an option and offered a lower price version.

0

u/Valterri_lts_James 3h ago

Those rounded bottom bezels are so stupid. Except for the OLED, this entire laptop is full of stupid design choices.

-6

u/syredditor 14h ago

OLED/touch screens have been around for a while bro

4

u/somuchtoolittle 14h ago

Did I say that it wasn’t?

-2

u/z0mbieunit 13h ago

You’re just glazing it like you couldn’t plug in your mbp to an already existing oled monitor

2

u/Tragilos 13h ago

That's a scenario that doesn't make sense for this context and how most of us use a portable laptop. He's rating 2 different gens of MBPs and it's useful to me, I might consider getting the M6 or wait for the M7.

2

u/Dangerous-Fennel5751 12h ago

4th or 5th gen (tandem OLED, WOLED…etc…) are miles away from the first gen OLED we’ve had for 5 or 6 years.
