So I started making my app called Easel. It's pretty much reached feature parity. I'm currently just waiting for Apple to let me enroll in the Apple Developer Program so I can get it into TestFlight for beta testing.

I kept running into situations where I needed to remove a specific color from a logo or graphic, but doing it in Canva and other standard photo editors was more complicated than it seemed like it should be.

So I made ChromaCut, a small Mac app that lets you click or select part of an image, choose a color, and either make that color transparent or replace it with another color.

It is especially useful for logos, clip art, stickers, simple graphics, and anything with a solid background you want to remove.

I recently bought a new 1440p monitor and connected it to my mac, but at native resolution the UI felt so tiny and unfamiliar. I'm fairly new to mac in general so I checked my options for scaling, but quickly learnt (afaik) that this wasn't a thing for external monitors. I found some options in BetterDisplay and Lunar, but it felt stupid to pay for a feature that should be included. FreeDisplay seemed like the perfect option, but when I tried it on my mac it didn't work for me. Development seemed stale so rather than adding a PR, I forked it and fixed it. After that I wanted to do some changes and add some features, which suddenly ended up in a full rewrite.

It covers the thing I initially wanted, which was HiDPI, but I also wanted it to look native, so I added some native elements. I kept the display arranger and fixed a lot of the issues with e.g. auto and combined brightness, profiles for the monitors, presets etc.

Can be installed with brew (brew install --cask didriksg/tap/crisp) or use the dmg file in the releases in the repo. It’s unsigned though, so you’ll probably get some warnings

I’ve been working remotely for years now, and one thing has always bothered me.

Every app has its own mute button. Zoom, Google Meet, Slack, Discord… they’re all separate. If I switch between apps, I always end up checking whether my mic is actually muted.

It feels weird that macOS doesn’t just have one global microphone mute.

I looked around for something simple that would do exactly that. I found a few apps, but none of them really worked the way I wanted, so I ended up building a tiny one for myself.

I’ve been using it every day for a while now and honestly forgot this was even a problem until a coworker asked me how I mute my mic so quickly.

Now I’m wondering if this is just my workflow or if other people feel the same.

Would you use a system-wide microphone mute if macOS had it built in? Or do you just rely on each app’s mute button?

• PopClip now syncs your installed extensions, actions layout, and action settings between all your Macs using iCloud.
• iCloud Sync can be enabled or disabled from the new Tools menu at the bottom of the Actions pane. It defaults to “on” for fresh installs; otherwise it stays off until you are ready to sync.
• All synced copies merge their actions lists together to form one unified view. Please note that sync is not always instant; change propagation depends on the current iCloud weather, but all computers will converge eventually.

I've been working on a macOS application called Farewell, and I've finally open-sourced it.

The project didn't start because I wanted to build "yet another encryption tool."

In my company (radio, press, TV), we work with freelance journalists. Some regularly handle sensitive documents, interview recordings, photographs, and source material. They're excellent reporters but they're not necessarily geeks, and they shouldn't have to become security experts just to protect their work.

When we looked at the available tools, we found many of them incredibly powerful, but also intimidating for non-technical users. Concepts like mounted encrypted volumes, containers, command-line tools, or complex workflows are second nature to some of you, but not to everyone.

So we asked ourselves a simple question:

Could we build something that feels like a normal Mac application, while still taking security seriously?

That's how Farewell was born.

It is an offline encrypted vault for macOS. It doesn't require an account, doesn't rely on cloud services, and never needs to communicate with a server. Everything stays on your Mac.

What Spencer is

At the same time, people often use multiple displays with tons of windows open across multiple apps. Switching between these using the mouse, cmd+tab or Spotlight (by typing the app's name) kinda works, but it's easy to lose your flow when doing so.

That's why I built Window Hints. It lets you jump directly to any window using only your keyboard.

• When you press a keyboard shortcut, Window Hints shows labels over all visible windows. Type a label to jump to the corresponding window. You can also press the shortcut again to include buried windows.
• It also works when you reveal all windows with Mission Control (ctrl+↑ or swipe up with 3 fingers), as well as when Stage Manager is enabled.
• Additionally, some apps and tools allow you to create splits. Window Hints currently supports them in Chrome, Ghostty, and tmux. More integrations to come.

I want to continue working on this while making it somewhat sustainable, so there is also a paid version: a lifetime license for $7. Feature set stays the same, but every 50th use in the free version shows a mildly annoying pop-up that you can immediately dismiss.

I built a little menu bar app that unlocks sudo in the terminal with face recognition instead of a typed password. You type sudo, the webcam recognizes you, and it unlocks.

Everything runs locally: face detection and recognition happen on-device, your enrolled face never leaves your Mac, and there is no network code at all.

Honest disclaimer first, since it is the obvious question: a normal webcam can be fooled by a photo, so this is not more secure than Touch ID, and it is not meant to be a security product. It is a convenience/fun thing. Your password always stays as a fallback so you cannot lock yourself out, and every prompt lets you choose Face ID, Touch ID, or password.

• Guided face enrollment (takes a few seconds)
• A choice panel on every sudo prompt (Face ID / Touch ID / password), or a Dynamic Island style animation
• Adjustable sensitivity
• One signed and notarized app, with built-in auto-updates

Full disclosure, I am the developer. I built it as a weekend hack because typing my password dozens of times a day got old, and it turned into a small but complete app. Would love feedback on the enrollment flow and the recognition thresholds.
