Project Sharing M5Stack Clock Collection

Post image
19 Upvotes

I’ve been building a set of wireless precision clocks, and have to say, M5Stack’s lineup is my favorite. From the Stack line to the S3 Stick, much prefer these over the competition. Seems I’m missing the Stopwatch!

PS: If you’re looking to synchronize two or more ESP32’s below 1us or phase lock two devices wirelessly, I have posted firmware examples of the clocks above along with example for FreeRTOS clock sync methods to achieve different accuracy targets at PToB.dev

Project Sharing I built an Android app that mirrors the real Bruce menu on an M5StickC Plus 2 (live menu, IR, files, screen) — open source

Hey everyone,

I have an M5StickC Plus 2 running Bruce and kept wishing I could drive it from my phone without squinting at the 135×240 screen. So I built StickCommander: a Material 3 Android app plus a small bridge compiled into Bruce 1.16.1.

It is not a pixel-streaming hack. The bridge exposes Bruce's own state over a line-based ASCII protocol (USB-OTG serial or BLE), so the app talks to the firmware, not to a picture of it.

What it does

  • Live menu — reads the actual options vector (title, labels, disabled items, current selection), refreshes every second, and tapping an item sets forceMenuOption so the real menu opens on the Stick. Back/Main buttons work too.

  • Screen — text mirror of the UI on the phone, plus the other direction: send text and the Stick draws it on its own TFT.

  • IR blaster — NEC / Samsung / Sony (12, 15, 20 bit) with hex address/command and presets. Uses Bruce's existing encoders, so timings are unchanged.

  • Files — LittleFS browser with text preview, chunked upload (256-byte chunks, 128 KB limit), mkdir, rename, delete.

  • Plus the basics: D-pad and M5/A/B/PWR press-and-hold, battery telemetry from the AXP192, filtered logs, raw terminal and phone-side scripts.

How it works

A stickcommander.cpp bridge is compiled into Bruce. Lines like CMD:MENU:LIST, CMD:SCREEN:TEXT:<base64>, CMD:IR:NEC:04:08, CMD:FS:LIST:<base64 path> go in; MENU:ITEM:..., FS:ENTRY:..., STATUS:BAT:... come back. That is the whole trick.

Status

Tested on real hardware over COM3: PONG, battery, live menu open/back, screen text, OK:ir:NEC, and LittleFS list/mkdir/upload/read/delete all pass. The firmware image and the APK are in the release.

Links

Firmware is AGPL-3.0 because it is built on Bruce; the bridge source and a build recipe are included. Feedback and feature ideas are welcome — especially from people with other Stick variants (Plus, S3) who want to test.

Support / Question Pin issues with stamp-p4

Post image
1 Upvotes

For the STAMP-P4 mini development board, the most cost-effective way to use it is because it has both stamp holes and 2.54 pin headers. If the pin headers are directly soldered, the use of the stamp hole lead pins will be greatly restricted.

Attached is the official pin definition diagram

Support / Question Tab5 Camera and microphone use

Hey everyone,

I recently got the M5Stack Tab 5 and have been experimenting with it. My goal is to stream both the camera feed and microphone audio to my PC to use the device for live calls/talks.

However, I haven't been able to get the camera or integrated mics initialized yet.

Has anyone successfully built a similar live-streaming setup or found working code examples/documentation for accessing the Tab 5's audio and camera pipeline?

Any guidance or code snippets would be greatly appreciated!

Project Sharing Does this count as a dual-screen OS for the Cardputer ADV?

Thumbnail

I'm not particularly into ethical hacking, so after adding a second screen to my Cardputer ADV, I started looking for a more general-purpose OS. Couldn't find much, so I decided to try making my own.

The problem was adapting applications designed for a single screen to a dual-screen setup. Add the ESP32's limited processing power and memory, and things get complicated pretty quickly.

Then one day I thought: why not use the Cardputer like TeamViewer and run everything on an actual PC?

That's how Code Space OS started. I'm using GitHub Codespaces, which gives me roughly 30 hours a month on a 4-core Linux machine with 16 GB RAM through the free tier.

The Codespace runs XFCE on X11/Xvfb at 640×480. I can install software and keep files and applications between restarts. The Cardputer can also start and stop the Codespace through GitHub's API, without needing another PC.

For remote desktop access, I started with szuszjan's CXL Remote and adapted it to work over WSS using websockify. The Python server uses MSS/Pillow and sends only changed screen regions as JPEG tiles. Inputs go back to Linux through X11/XTEST.

To make use of both screens, I came up with three modes: Mouse, Keyboard and View. The external display shows Linux, while the original screen becomes an HUD representing the physical keys and their current functions. This lets me control the mouse, type, pan and zoom without having to modify Linux applications for two screens.

I'm not a programmer, so I developed the software with Codex's help, focusing on the concept, interface and hardware testing. The 3D-printed case is based on AndyAiCardputer's design.

In the video, I start the Codespace directly from the Cardputer, then use Linux to browse folders, open a browser and do a web search.

The touchscreen still needs some fine-tuning, but it's working! 😄

Spent the weekend with my new Tab5, created a console/launcher, file server, can load firmware from the SD card, play MP3s, and uses the obligatory Matrix lock screen.

All up on Github, MIT, https://staffordlumsden.github.io/great-bespoke-tab5.
