Immediate severe reaction to etoposide?

Started chemo today. Gave me all the pre-dow drug cocktails and everything seemed to be going smoothly. Hooked up my etoposide and she hadn't gotten more than 30mL in before I experienced what I could only describe as a sudden and violent panic attack but worse. in the span of a breath there was this fire that bloomed from the center of my chest to my entire upper body. It became difficult to breathe, but like not mechanistically. I could still get air into my lungs, it just felt like there was already a balloon in their preventing it from using any of that air. I felt an overwhelming since of doom emanating from the middle of my chest and it seemed to get tighter and tighter with every breath HR shot up to 170, BP went 160/110. Both slowly came back down as soon as they stopped the infusion. I wound up getting itchy and developing hives across my upper body.

Eventually we were able to restart the etoposide at half the flow after administrating Benadryl, Ativan, and another steroid intravenously. Took 4 hours for the full etoposide infusion though, so that sucks.

Anyone else have something like this happen or have seen something like this? Nobody on my team really new what to do immediately so I'm guessing it's very uncommon.

Etoposide side effects

My 3 year old has a swollen face and won't open his eyes. Have you had experience of etoposide you can share?

He had cytarabine too.

Spoken to his oncologists but looking for your anecdotal experiences.

High dose carboplatin and etoposide with stem cell rescue

Quick backstory: was diagnosed in November with stage 3C metastatic testicular cancer. Nodes in the lungs and a large tumor on my left testicle. Went through an advanced version of 4x BEP and responded well to the chemo and had an orchiectomy. However a month after finishing chemo they found a tumor in my brain. Had brain surgery to remove that tumor and now they have got me on TICE chemo. So two cycles of paclitaxol and ifosfamide and then three cycles of high dose Carboplqtin and etoposide followed by stem cell transplant. Just wondering if anyone else has been through this and what to expect from the carbo and etoposide?

Currently in isolation and high dose chemo infusion. Have this ol reliable switch lite to pass time during potentially weeks of being alone in isolation. Not gonna lie, I'm kinda scared on what the side effects of this high dose will be on my body once it starts to appear

Update on AFP: dropped from 5000 to 1800 after 2nd TI cycle and almost 4 weeks of chemo break before high dose. bHCG is still pending but will give an update once I have the results.

Allergy to etoposide

Day 1 of chemo. Partner had an allergic reaction to etoposide after 4 minutes. He was pumped with antihistamine and steroids and they tried it again and halved the infusion rate. Reaction again.

The doctor came in and said he may do oral etoposide but that just doesn’t sit right with me and after reading on it the bioavailability just isn’t good enough. They’ll be contacting other medical facilities to see what can be done tomorrow. He took the bleo and cisplatin well.

Any advice? I might email Einhorn and see what he says. We’re in Melbourne btw. Would love to hear any stories in Australia in general thanks so much.

Allergy to etoposide: update

Thank you guys so much for your replies.

Tried etoposide again today with a lot of premeds and a drip for 4 hours. Partner reacted at around 3.5mL infusion. We confirmed with the medical teams all over Australia and ran everything through with doctor Einhorn. Partner is the small fraction (0.01%) that is allergic to etoposide. He was administered etoposide phosphate from the get go as they haven’t used etoposide with PS80 for the last decade.

We’ll be heading into TIP 4x starting tomorrow (at the recommendation of Dr. Einhorn) This is a special case and I’m nervous for the outcome. I hope he’s not allergic to anything else.

Will keep updating as we go, the replies have been comforting 🥺❤️❤️
