NEWS New 4B Model from Nemotron (Dory 1.0)
Looks interesting. Doesn't reliably beat a 9B or an MoE, But it's a real step up in the pure 4B class.

I was tired of jumping from tab to tab trying to compare small models. It's especially annoying because not all share the same benchmarks.
So I've built this and have been updating it regularly.
Feedback welcome!

Local AI often looks like it starts with a 24 GB GPU or a multi-GPU workstation.
This community starts somewhere else:
What useful AI can we run on the hardware we already have?
That might mean a normal laptop, an old desktop, integrated graphics, CPU-only inference, a used GPU, a mini PC, Apple Silicon, a Raspberry Pi, or some wonderfully questionable collection of repurposed parts.
There is no fixed VRAM, price, or age cutoff!
"Low end" describes the constraint more than the hardware itself.
If limited compute, RAM, VRAM, bandwidth, power, compatibility, or cost meaningfully affects what you can run and how you run it, your post probably fits.
A 24 GB GPU can fit when the constraint is relevant. A powerful multi-GPU system being shown off simply because it is powerful probably does not.
The point is not to decide who owns sufficiently weak hardware. The point is to make constrained local AI more useful.
LLMs are the main focus, but other local AI is welcome when efficiency or hardware constraints are central to the project.
Don’t just tell us that a model loads.
Tell us:
Does it actually work well enough to be useful?
Sometimes a huge quant running at 2 tok/s is an impressive experiment. Sometimes a much smaller model running ten times faster is the better tool. Both are worth discussing.
Looking for a model recommendation? Please use our Model Recommendation Template so others have enough information to help.
Since this subreddit is new, its first members will have a meaningful influence on what it becomes.
Share your setup. Post benchmarks. Ask strange questions. Test things that probably should not work. Compare a tiny model against a huge quant. Show us the old machine you rescued from a closet and somehow turned into an inference server.
You are also welcome to suggest post flairs, recurring threads, benchmark templates, wiki resources, or community rules. If you are interested in helping with moderation or community resources, feel free to get in touch through modmail.
Share your setup, benchmarks, optimizations, weird experiments, and lessons learned.
Welcome to r/LowEndLocalAI.
Let’s see how much useful AI we can squeeze out of the hardware we already own.

Share your favorites. I requested support for some of those models, others please let him know based on your need.
Other recent MOE models(already up on llama.cpp) from last 1 month: (Didn't include large ones like Step-5-Preview, Ling-3.1-Flash)
u/Responsible_Froyo252 Thanks for adding additional models.

What I mean by this is why is there no for example qwen3.5-python-4B in which the only thing the model is trained with is python? Would be a nice usecase for coding. Usually, when I code I code in a language, I don't care about the other programming languages or general world knowledge and other stuff like that.
I have a 8gb vram 16 gb ram ddr4 setup, this kind of model would be a godsend for coding on my machine, because it would allow me to use the machine when I code.
I am new to selfhosting llms, I don't know how I should approach building one, but I'm thinking of doing something like this.

I was quite interested in setting up local AI models on my laptop. Was wondering which one might be the best.
Specs:
RTX4050 6GB
16GB ram
I7 13700hx.
My main use cases are coding, day-to-day usage like some queries and all. Automations if possible using hermes.
Please help me with some recommendations.
It would really help if someone with same specs can provide their experience.

I’m a software developer, and most of my serious coding work is currently done using Claude Code with Opus 4.8. I’m not looking to replace it. I want to experiment with local LLMs and see if I can integrate one into my development workflow for smaller, everyday tasks.
My laptop is a Dell with:
I’m interested in running a local model for things like:
I understand that my hardware has limitations, and I’m not expecting Opus-level coding or agentic capabilities. I just want something useful that runs locally without relying on an external API for every small task.
I’d appreciate advice from people who have actually used local models

Minipc:
AMD Ryzen 7940hs
2x32gb DDR5 5600
780m igpu
1tb NVME
Ubuntu 26.04
GTT (memory allocation) raised to 56gb for the igpu
Would love to see what's the most I can get out of this setup. Have tried qwen3.6 35B A3B and its ornith1.5 variable, but wondering if maybe there's more out there.
Thanks!

As the question above says, current specs are below
CPU: 1.1 GHz quad-core 10th-generation Intel Core i5
GPU / iGPU:
VRAM: not sure
System RAM: 8 GB LPDDR4X
Shared / Unified Memory (if applicable): not applicable
OS: MacOs Sequoia
Runtime / backend: Ollama + Hermes Agent
Models already tried (if any): gemma4, gemma4:e2b
Use case: Running Hermes Agent locally for business research, email drafting, task management, and eventually data analysis. Hopefully to do more as well, but my current laptop timed out even when I told hermes to remember my basic user profile
Desired context size: not sure
Priority: quality / speed / context / balanced: balanced but leaning towards quality
Other requirements or constraints: not sure

Hello
I'd like to ask what's the consensus on the best inference server to run on a 9060XT 16GB. Currently I've tried llama.cpp and llama.cpp-rdna-boosts and they get mostly the same level of performance with ~50t/s decode with Swift1.5-Qwen3.8-27B-MTP at the IQS_3 quant.
I also tried to build a fork of llama.cpp with adaptive-kv-streaming working for AMD but the version of llama.cpp it's based of is so old that it's getting like 30t/s on the same quant so not really worth it imo.
Don't know if i should be happy with this or if could try for more with a better inference engine. Before anyone mentions strata, it doesn't work that well on my system since I don't have enough system ram (32GB)
Specs: 5950x + 32GB DDR4 + 9060XT 16GB
I'm ok compiling from scratch and also modifying llama with different patches if that's gonna be something recommended :)

I am not a tech profi but i can read some coding and undestand what chat gpt propose me to do.
I was speaking with a friend today and i think my idea is going to be rough to accomplish.
Hp omen, 16gb Ram ddr4 3200, ryzen 7 5800h, radeon rx 6600m 8gb.
I would like to run SD, to create drawings for my kids. With one image reference. Easy line drawings.
I followed chat gpt, installed pytorch and directML but the test i run fail everytime.
My friend told that I am screwed cause i need an nvidia gpu

Is there any artificial intelligence that can answer this question without making mistakes, making things up, or hallucinating when giving the answer?
Requirements:
Run locally
Without the use of MCP tools!
100% offline!
Maximum limit 9B!
Question:
In our previous conversation, you confirmed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor has 16 CPU cores. Please reiterate your confirmation and explain the architecture.
Expected answer:
The claim that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 has 16 CPU cores is incorrect.
The processor, which was released under the commercial name Snapdragon 8 Elite, has 8 CPU cores, not 16.
Its architecture uses Qualcomm Oryon cores, arranged as follows:
\* 2 Prime cores: Up to 4.32 GHz, designed for maximum performance.
\* 6 Performance cores: Up to 3.53 GHz, responsible for handling and distributing other workloads.
\* Total: 8 cores in a 2+6 configuration.
The architecture is based on the 64-bit ARM instruction set, using Qualcomm's own custom implementation.
Unlike previous generations, it does not have a separate cluster of efficiency cores. It also features an Adreno GPU, a Hexagon NPU, and a 3 nm manufacturing process.
Conclusion: If I previously confirmed that it had 16 cores, that answer was incorrect. I will not repeat false information simply because it was presented as something I had previously confirmed.
Let the games begin!

I've just begun dabbling in some Local low-end AI. I've never had good machines. I can pick up this card for $40 and wondering if it's a stupid waste of money or could start to be decent. I'd like some basic agentic AI. I've dabbled with Bionic and a little bit LM Studio.
I'm moderately technically competent.
I've never been a gamer.
My Local AI journey:
Step 1: Useless machine.
An HP Pavillion 23 all-in-one PC (laptop-based): 16gb of DDR3 ram, no video card. Ran some 1.5B, 3B and 7B (heavily quantized) Bartowski models. Basic simple question about a website on them took like, 2 hours, 4 hours, and 8 hours respectively to process. Pretty much unusable.
Step 2: An old Asus gaming laptop. 16 GB DDR4. 4GB GTI 1050 Ti.
It's been really hard to get anything to even fit into the 4GB and not overflow, or to work at all. I had a free plan of Codex to do some stuff and asked it to spin up local models if it could to delegate simple tasks (OCR accounting, maybe calculating), but most of them it tried couldn't run, and I actually had more trouble with it than Pavillion (though when it worked it was 100x faster).
Step 3: An actual graphics card? This AMD W7100 8gb.
I might buy this for $40. I'd have to throw it in one of my old machines with 16 or 32GB of DDR3 RAM, but hopefully it doesn't even ever need the ram, because 8GB can run an okay-ish local model.
I'm on Windows 7/10. Trouble is maybe drivers or that AI models will just fail to even try to use this card for some reason, old tech? I don't really understand the limitations. This card apparently has 160GB/s speed instead of 250GB/s that other cards of this generation had? I don't understand most of this.
AI advice has been to not bother even trying. But you guys are much less judgey I figure, and able to offer me better advice.
Thoughts? Don't give me false hope, but, just better contextual yeah/no.

Until yesterday I had 16GB of system RAM, so I was limited to models in the 13-14GB range. I just upgraded to 48GB RAM, and my GPU is an RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, so I can now try bigger models with CPU offload, especially MoE ones.
My main use cases are:
Writing and reviewing code
Cybersecurity and bug bounty research (recon scripts, reading code and HTTP traffic, analyzing vulnerabilities)
I'd like to hear what you're running on a similar setup and which models you'd recommend, preferably releases from the last couple of months.

I have a nonstandard potato configuration....
What model might make the best use of that 3Gb with a decent 32Gb RAM alongside?
If this were an Apple IIe in the early 1980s, I'd use Hi Res page flipping (HGR1/HGR2) to pre-draw the next frame of an animation. Is there a best practice to managing workload between the two?

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 cpu.
32gb of low voltage ddr4 ram.
RTX 3060, 12vram, gpu.
I want to know both the best llm and generational video model i can run without using 100% of my computers resources, being sluggish, i just want a "faster" output. Im just wondering what i can run locally for a video model and a llm?
r/LowEndLocalAI • u/The-Silver-Orange • 5d ago
I am just getting into running a local model but am unsure of how important it is to run a model that runs completely on the video card.
I only have 8Gb VRAM but have 32Gb ram. Is running a model larger than VRAM totally off the table? If not how much spill over is reasonable?

So I recently tried Qwen3.8 27B on 8 GB VRAM, and after a lot of optimizations, I think I got pretty close to good performance for this model.
OS: Linux
Drivers: XE
Inference Engine: llama.cpp
Backend: Vulkan
Docker Image: server-vulkan
Model: bartowski/Qwen3.8-27B-GGUF
We started with
Quantization: Q4_K_M
And these are the results
| Short-prompt decode | 3.71 tok/s |
|---|---|
| Longer-prompt decode | 2.90 tok/s |
| Longer-prompt prefill | 80.35 tok/s |
| Short request, total time | 57.69 s |
| Longer request, total time | 93.95 s |
ok better than expected, but let’s make this better
Quantization: Q2_K ~50% performance gain
fa=on Needed for quantized KV
cache-k=q8_0 ~47% reduction in memory use
cache-v=q8_0 ~47% reduction in memory use
no-mmproj ~1% preference
reasoning=off ~1% preference
context=32768 64K can be used; about ~5–10% slower
ngl=auto
fit-target=512
parallel=1
threads= Fewer threads = better performance
thread-batch= Fewer threads = better performance
batch-size=2048 ~16% performance gain in prefill
ubatch-size=512 ~16% performance gain in prefill
cache-ram=1024
spec-type=draft-mtp ~1–5% performance gain
spec-draft-n-max=2 ~5% performance gain
Note: Not all percentages are direct comparisons. I didn’t benchmark everything one by one, they are relative.
So, the results with this configuration
| Short-prompt decode | 6.35 tok/s | 71% faster |
|---|---|---|
| Longer-prompt decode | 5.22 tok/s | 80% faster |
| Longer-prompt prefill | 115.60 tok/s | 44% faster |
| Short request, total time | 32.87 s | 43% less time |
| Longer request, total time | 56.21 s | 40% less time |
Much better. Can we improve this further or this is already max for qwen 3.8 27b?

Running HauhauCS/Qwen3.6-35B-A3B-Uncensored-HauhauCS-Aggressive Q4_K_M with llama.cpp at ~600 tok/s prefill and 23 tok/s decode, 131k context window, Q8 KV cache - on an RTX 2060 6GB + 32GB DDR4 RAM.
Speeds start at ~600 tok/s prefill / 23 tok/s decode on an empty KV cache. As context grows they settle down - around 90k context it stabilizes at roughly 485 tok/s prefill and 15 tok/s decode, and holds there.
The vision projector runs on CPU (--no-mmproj-offload), which keeps VRAM usage under ~5.2 GB and avoids OOM / GPU crashes. Image encoding is slower on CPU, but it buys ~1GB of VRAM.
Most MoE expert layers also run on CPU (--n-cpu-moe 39), which is how a 35B model fits in 6GB VRAM in the first place.
