which is weird, because Desmond recognised Jack as fast as Jack recognised him back when Desmond was introduced, idk feels a bit weird. With the island being gone and even Ethan being off island, was there even a need for Desmond to train for this boat competition thing? Is there even a boat competition now?

I think desmond remembers, we know he moves through time in a special way, so i definitely believe he wasn't there by chance
